PARAISÓPOLIS, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL - Part 3 of my 2022 Brazil Travel series comes from Paraisópolis, one of Brazil's largest favelas with a population estimated to be between 80-100k, located in São Paulo, Brazil's MEGACITY!
Yes, you read the title correctly - foreigner goes to a favela alone and this is what happened! Note that I do NOT advise visiting a favela solo. It is best to visit a favela on an organised tour OR with a local who can show you around. These areas are somewhat if not totally neglected by local governments, therefore they are generally run by cartels or other organisations, meaning as a foreigner, you may be in danger. Is Brazil dangerous? Is Brazil safe? We should ask these questions and remember our risk tolerances are different. I have been filming in places like this for years, you may not feel as comfortable as me.
The intention of this video was to quash misconceptions of favelas or slums (or less affluent areas - the word favela or slum can come across as derogatory) and to highlight a real POSITIVE going on right now. Brasil Favela Xpress is a company set up by Giva Pereira, a delivery service set up during the Covid-19 pandemic to allow access to deliveries and to create employment opportunities for locals. A FANTASTIC initiative! We also have some AMAZING Brazilian food, Pastel de Queijo!

🇬🇧 I hope you understood that this video is not about a white westerner going to a favela for SHOCK value and 'likes' (what is this, 2017? Plus I'm almost 40 for f**ks sake) and that this is actually about letting the world know about a fantastic initiative set up to benefit those living in less-affluent areas of Brazil. *To reiterate, DO NOT go to a favela by yourself - do a tour or go with a local*. Remember that I have been filming videos in places like this for years and I know how to behave in these situations. If you wanna be a d**k in the comments, feel free. I would be more than happy to set up a Skype call to discuss your concerns if you have the balls to speak to someone in person instead of from your keyboard. Best Regards. Remember you can use the TIMESTAMPS to jump to certain parts of the video before you start complaining about someone talking on camera, what do you want me to do, use morse f**king code? I have to watch this video three times to get a better glimpse of everything that it was going on during the whole time. There are multiple layers of colors, people and space. It was impressive what you were able to show us this time. The favelas aren’t just a place, those are living spaces for millions of people that have been interacting with their environment since a long time. Thank you for showing us the human and beautiful aspect of favelas.

If you compare the African or Indian Slums with these Brazilian favelas, Brazilian favelas are the first world, many people live there for lack of choice, but they are not extremely poor, people have their lives, they work and go to school, Paraisópolis has its own commercial center, on the main street, impressive, and of course there are bad people, but they are a minority of the minority

I understand what you mean. I feel like the word 'favela' is extremely broad. I've been to similar areas in other countries and found that people who live there are leading normal lives, they shouldn't be seen as an attraction or something extraordinary. I always feel the community aspect is something lacking elsewhere and people that say 'these places are dangerous!' are the people who have never even been there!

That's cuz you've never been to the northern part of Brazil, some cities with more than half of its people in poverty, and in the northeast, some even live in mud houses in the country and have no access to the internet.

I remember that in big football events, Pele sometimes gives interviews for Mexican TV, and many people claim Hey!!! I understand Portuguese!!! What they don't realize is that Pele speaks portuñol when he speaks in a Spanish-speaking country., that's the reason they understand him. By the way, Pele is very ill, and I hope his treatment is effective to keep him much longer with us.

Portuñol is truly a brand new discovery for me! I had a whole conversation using it in a phone shop the other day and everything was understood! In three videos time (I'm well ahead of KZbin time) I go to the Pelé museum in Santos. It was really interesting and I included bits about the Mexico World Cup and there's a photo of him in Guanajuato! I didn't know he was unwell!

Lots of coffee history here, as the most important plantations were here. If you'd like to visit, please let me know. Hi Jose, there's literally a million videos on YT of do gooders going on "tours" in these places including Mark Whines to much Kara and Snate etc million to billions of dollars fundraised, they should be getting food bank handouts on golden plates and showing the tourists themselves in gilded cages it's pathetic to think people go on tours there.

The whole tour thing has been done. To be fair I went on one in 2009 lol. There doesn't need to be a tour. These are normal people, not zoo animals for privileged white westerners. In fact, people in favelas are far more intelligent and entrepreneurial than most. This video is proof of that!

The vast majority of people who live in the favelas, I would say 99%, are hardworking, honest, great people, who have a very difficult life, society and the government do not give them many opportunities, and yet they do so much, they are true warriors. , very creative and incredibly hardworking, imagine if they had more opportunities. It's the people, simple and amazing people like these, kind and happy, that make Brazil so well seen by foreigners, that we are such a receptive people. It is sad that we have so much inequality, our people deserve to have the best, but as in most parts of the world, few have much, and many have so little. I liked the video, the way it showed the local initiatives, it wasn't just to be another one showing a favela "as a tourist show", it's people's lives, and it's important for people to know that there are a lot of people there doing a lot of cool things for the development of the community, acting where the state is absent, acting where society closes its eyes not to see and pretending that there is not so much inequality, and they still think they have the right to judge. Sorry if i wrote something wrong, i'm writing with some help from the translator.

Janaina you are my new favourite person! Don't worry your comments are always spectacular and well-written, in fact you seem to have an amazing to ability to watch a video and wonderfully describe what my intention was from making it. You summarised it better than I could! Thank you! It's so true, in places without government support, there is no choice but to set up local initiatives. It makes me wonder what the world would be like without governments, or how people would be. Would people be more proactive instead of waiting for the government to fix all their problems? I think supposed 'first-world' countries like UK and US could learn a lot from people living in favela areas.

When I was little I attended the school, Escola Graduada, on the other side of the avenue. Paraisópolis was much smaller then and I always wondered what life was like there, as we were told not to go in and there was not much opportunity to do so as we were bused to school from another part of SP. I'm glad you had the opportunity to do this and discovered, as I did during the time I lived in Brazil, that the locals are mostly friendly and helpful. I have no idea if it's true or not, but I've heard from a few people that the favelas are often safer than the main touristy neighborhoods because most robberies and such are targeted towards middle/upper class people, meaning it's less prevalent in an area where most people are poor. Also, it really didn't look like that bad of a neighborhood - it looked really vibrant if nothing else.

I agree with you there, I've said the same in Mexico. People spend so much time visiting expensive tourist areas then act surprised when they get robbed. I spend most of my time in regular cities and have never had a single in issue in over 2 decades of travelling!

Yeah, if you are a local or know one it's right, I'm brazilian, two reasons for that, first the drug dealers are locals, they grow up in there, and they don't mess with they people without reason, because they live there, their familys live there, theyr child friends and etc, second they don't want police in there, so if someone was messing up with people they will take care of it. The really danger going to a favela is they can think you are a cop, that's the reason it's not recomended, they know everyone who live there, and they never seen you around, so it can scale quick. The second danger is you are there and a police operation start, you can be shoot by both sides. If you really want to go, first try to do it with a local, if you are in car open the windows, so they can see you, that make they more calm, but you probably will be asked what are you doing there.

Realmente, nas favelas do Brasil as gangues não toleram roubos dentro de seus territórios, por isso dificilmente você será roubado em uma favela, mas nas áreas turísticas não existe essa lei

I'm from the UK and I met my future wife in the favela and never felt like a foreigner or intruder. The simple rule is here and there always the same principle: play by the rules and you will have an amazing experience. you don't wear shiny new clothes, you keep your phone always safe and speaking to locals is the way to learn those unwritten rules. The police you hardly find in the favela, those people have their own "police" Some call it the mafia others call it the favela's own law of engagement, or the people's protection Don't believe those horrible BBC or Sky News reports of crime, weapon and street fights. In the favela every weekend the people celebrate the weekend from Friday to Monday morning. Yes, I saw the police as well, helping the local mafia boss to recover a stolen motorbike. They don't come unprepared, guns and machine guns are always to use if necessary. Yes, I saw people carrying their own weapon of choice to defend their business. Whatever your personal choice of drug you will find it in the favelas. The noise over the weekends is undescribably loud, forget sleeping or peace. Everyone plays his own choice of music, people drink a lot and just celebrate the work-free days. Even a massive supermarket exists and is open 7 days a week Over the years the favelas have not really larger, but their houses come higher and higher in added levels room by room built on top of the room underneath. Some are very impressive from people who obviously run a good business. From Hairdressers to any shop you can think about you find in the favella. Brazilians know how to party and I always felt welcomed never received rude behaviour or rude words, the Brazilians are the most polite people I ever met. They may look dangerous but this is the culture of expressing yourself the way you want to be recognised. We live as well in a very modern apartment in the centre of Sao Paulo. For me an escape for more quiet tours and a more peaceful life. I always say Brazil is a different world because it's so hard to describe the differences from our Western world societies. Here its don't matter what you know or what you do, it's more like who you know. The food and the choices of food are unbelievable, even if food is the most expensive item to buy. In time you learn which areas to enter with caution but since 2019 till now I never been a victim of crime. There is so much more to say but if anyone like some more info just leave me a comment and I respond asap.

You like the cheese? Divine? Good! It gives me South American cheese faith. I live in Washington DC where there are large, poorer neighborhoods that haven't had places where people go out and shop for food. Sure white and Black people left. Sure neighborhoods changed in a moment. Haywire. Even our whitest and smallest cities often gave up downtown. I am a Democrat but not so Progressive. I see how my nation votes for a mean and uninterested man like Trump and may do so again. Sure Brazil and Mexico have new neighborhoods and gated places, but nothing could prepare most foreigners for the sense of abandonment that one finds all over in the U.S. The county that would seem most abandoned in England would seem, not quaint, given the problems, but very different. And many parts of the U.S. are as densely populated as Europe. You are kind and welcoming in your assessments of where you go, however much you demur. There are so many great things about my country, but I wonder how much we are missing. I'm sorry to blather, but this is background to saying: You rock!
