I discovered your channel recently and its really helpful, I don't think i will do something like that considering that im having an hard time understanding both photoshop and the plug-in part of RPGMaker but i hope i will be able to make map of this quality at some point

Take it slow and enjoy the learninig process. It is a bit confusing at the beginning, but once you got a few basic concepts, everything will become easier. Have fun! :)

I love how the lighting in these parallaxes work, i'd do it myself but i'm honestly not sure how to properly incorporate it with a day/night cycle with screen tint, wouldn't know how to turn the candle/window lighting effects on and off based on time of day. any tips? :i

You can exchance parallax layers, there's a plugin command for that. So based on your clock system you could switch out the needed layers :) If you don't mind the extra work that would be needed to create a night version of every map. Also, the doodads plugins (yanfly or visustella) can be helpful for extra light sources. Just create the light as a sprite and use a switch to determine if it's shown or not. The only problem with all of that is, that at some point of the day all the maps will pretty visibly update to the night/day version. (and updating large scale maps might cause a flicker... all of that could be hidden behind a screen fade though, something like "dawn of the 3rd day" ;) )

@@starlitcastle Yeah, I have no idea where to start with the plug in commands to make the image only appear based on a variable. and with the sheer amount of maps ( including forest levels and indoor/outdoor ) there's not a chance i could do a day and night version, not to mention the day night system i have tints the screen manually, and i'm honestly not sure how to adjust it without completely messing it up and then not knowing how to put it back haha. adding a layer on top that isn't affected by the tint is the only way i can do what i need but so far, the tint affects all parallaxes that i've tried so it doesn't really seem to work in my case.

This video makes me crave the Adobe creative suite. I'm trying to get things done with Piskel and Autodesk Sketchbook, the former of which can't handle importing translucent layers, the latter of which stretches corner sprites by three pixels during every import/export. It's hilariously inefficient. In any case, nice parallaxing, very impressive.

Well, this isn't done with PS. It's clip studio paint. (Not a big fan of adobe anymore) CSP goes on sale pretty frequently and has a free trial if I remember corretly. You can also go with Krita or Gimp, both are free.

I saw some of your videos and were always wondering what is the size of the canvas and the grid sizes, bcuz anytime i make a map the grid just wont rlly fir the usual grid in rpg maker :(

The gridsize is your tilesize. So for MV it would be 48. Sometimes I use 24 if I want to place tiles half a tile up or such. The canvas size depends on the mapsize you want to go for. I have a tutorial on parallax mapping, which explains that sort of stuff.

​​@@starlitcastle i manage to draw a map myself however the character cant seem to move, and it errored my game like it wont show the title screen and theres a weird red blocky thing in the screen at the beginning. At first i use the yanfly regional restriction plugin but it wont fit my map grid, so i use the qplus qmovement plugin but it errored my game instead (like the on i said before)

@@lntm_ please inform yourself about the plugins you are using. QPlus does have an option to skip the titlescreen, that might be your problem and why your titlescreen gets skipped. You can change it in the plugin settings. If that's what you mean by errored? Also the red blocks are probably your collisions showing you can toogle that off with a button, check plugin documentation, I can't remember which one it was right now.

I have a parallax mapping tutorial on the channel, you basically need a plugin something like orange overlay, galv's graphic layers or similar.

What is your problem? There’s no difference in moving between parallax or normal maps so there’s should be no reason for a tutorial. Which problem do you encounter? Pls describe it and how you setup your par maps (which plugin are you using? Where are you using the plugin call?)

@@starlitcastle Okay, so I wanted to create a parallax map by following these two tutorials: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGXRqal5lrWUgNk and kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYDLo2qJrLyba68 (There is part two, but about collisions so I don't think that matters, but you can check just in case if you want) and with plugins shared in videos like: Community_Basic, CustomLogo, TDDP_BindPicturesToMap, QPlus, QMovement, and CollisionMap. Then after doing exactly what creators of videos do I make my first map without problem, everything was showed and worked perfectly. But then after creating second map by coping the event that shows parallax from the first map (With changing map number and image file and redmap collisions in event properties) something went wrong - My character was able to load both two maps after transporting from first to second map, but after returning to the first it was replaced by the second map parallax, leaving only it's redmap collisions untouched. And after this no matter what if I move character between maps it still shows second parallax on the first map. (PS: I didn't use second layer for map as shown in the first linked video.)

@@darklecramo I don't have time to check those videos in detail right now, so I'm taking a guess from general experience. Do you have an event on the first map that sets up all the map1 properties again after you return to that map? It can be done with an autorun event, that sets up your plugin calls for the map1 graphics and collissions upon entering the map. You should end that event with a switch turning on, so you don't get frozen by a never stopping autorun event. Give that event a second page, with that switch as a condition. The page can be blank otherwise. Place it somewhere out of the way. Whenever you leave the map, on the transition events (whereever you are able to leave the map) turn that switch back off, so it does work again next time! Let me know if this helps you with your problem. If you want to not have to deal with the adding pictures and plugin calls in an event for each map that bind picture makes you do... I'd recommend looking into orange overlay (easiest option) or galv's graphics layers (more advanced, but more freedom) as a parallax mapping plugin, which allow you to handle that in the map note tag and autoloading the graphics upon entering said map. @@starlitcastle I did as you said, and It didn't work - I switch from "Parallel" to "Autorun" event that shows the picture, at the end of it I added "Control Switches: Name of the event second page = ON" that I made entirely blank, and then in the transition area I added "Control Switches: Name of the event second page = OFF" in the first and second map. I don't know what to do :(

@@darklecramo And you have that switch that you are using, for simplicity lets say its named MAP1 as the condition on page two of you autorun event and page two is set as action trigger, instead of autorun. Are you using the same picture ID for the img files, or different IDs for the images of map 1 and 2? images work in a hierachy, the higher the number, the more on top it will be shown. If you used ID 1 for your map 1 image and ID 2 for your map two image and never did delete these images, they will still show on top. I'd recommend always use the same ID for the same layer of the map. So for the ground image for example always ID1 and for the Parallax ID2 or whichever you assign for those. They will automatically replace the old img that way. It's a bit hard to help without seeing your events and all. I can recommend looking for help in the rpgmakerweb forums, as you can post screenshots of your events over there.

Read up on the feature difference and decide based on that knowledge. As far as I know EX is only a better choice if you intend to draw a lot of comics or animate. For normal illustrations (or in this case mapping) Pro is fine. I have CSP Pro :)

I use Clip Studio Paint to paint on the map. To get this working in RPG Maker you'll need a plugin. I have a tutorial on my channel about parallax mapping (this is what this method is usually called within the rpg maker community).
