@@bille77 With the music he's working on in this clip (not to mention the fact that being the mix engineer for records by Nick Cave makes him a bit of an authority) and the fact that it suits how he works, it's not bullshit. I would rather work like that too: putting 2 tube preamps on the mix bus to add a certain flavour will always be more preferable to me, for example, given the choice... He has the choice and he has the credits and the platform to back it up.

@@spiritparty That's true! In the last few months I've also learned a lot about digital distortion and aliasing. I guess analog distortion doesn't have aliasing, so would definitely be clearer sounding, and will make things pop more, whereas digital distortion without oversampling might muddy up a mix somewhat. :)

There's a Paul McCartney interview in the early 90s saying the exact same thing about deciding what takes to use. He says something like "if anyone hears a mistake, it's probably a very good take". I never quite got it, but now I do.
@mts26393 жыл бұрын
It's very common to hear this. Small mistakes make it sound natural, and can be very useful if 2 or more takes are mixed together. This is why programmed instruments don't have that magic.

I was mixing an acoustic project today. I used three microphones on the acoustic guitar and a room mic. When I started processing the guitar in mixdown I noticed the sound of his bracelet/jewelry/whatever he was wearing knocking against the guitar while he was strumming. It was mostly picked up by one of the three mics but I decided to keep the sound upfront because I felt like it had a lot of character and it wasnt too distracting. Im glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way 👀 One record I did I was asked to cut out the noise of the guitarist on parts where the stool was making some noise which was a bummer because I thought it sounded really organic, like you were there in the room with them. Don't get me wrong, I love using drum samples, super tight editing and all the things we can do to make everything perfect now but... Sometimes theres happy accidents like Bob Ross always talked about in painting 😅

The reason the Stones weren't happy with the release of Satisfaction is cos it was only a demo recording, never intended to be a major release.. they only found out about it after the record company had released it.. hindsight shows it didn't matter, as it was clearly good enough, but Keef heard his guitar line originally in his head as a horn section part.. they probably didn't care too much about small issues in the recording, as they would've been thinking they'd get it right later on..
@evilwarnings24193 жыл бұрын
I have heard the masters of Marvin Gaye what's going on and when you hear the takes by themselves it is amazing the amount of mistakes, leaked noises and oher stuff in there. I think those older recordings are so valuable and the sound today is incredible considering the technology.
@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer3 жыл бұрын
You're right! That's actually the reason he started using the Maestro FZ-1 fuzz because back then it was being sold as a way to get "horn" sounds on guitar! Today, people pay anywhere from $600-$1200 for "boutique" versions of that fuzz circuit. An incredibly simple circuit indeed! Funny to think how one band's haphazard demo spawned a generation of music, as well as a massive sub culture of music gear with effect pedals. Fuzz pedals in particular.
@leepd13 жыл бұрын
@@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer Yep.. Keef envisaged horns playing that now famous riff when they finally got to the proper recording.. but one has to accept that the record company got it right by releasing the demo.. they went huge after this.

This song Echo by BRMC is a masterpiece! The chorus is just brilliant and then fuck me its like another chorus towards the end that beats the first! Crank it up loud and close your eyes, you wont know where you fuckin are when it finishes. The dark sound that Nick creates with this album is truly genius. The drums sound very flabby with hardly any sparkle to them (which works with the vibe) but yet he still gets them to cut through the wall of sound. Just brilliant!

I’ve never listened to him talk about his work before and I really love his vibe. I’m a professional musician, songwriter and light producer. I really get bummed with how heavily edited, quantized and pitch corrected modern popular music is. I can’t wait until trends swing away from that again. Music doesn’t feel very human when everything’s grided tightly. I was listening to an old favorite hit record recently and was sudden mortified by how pitchy the singing was. What’s happened to our ears!!!

Analog equipment generally is really old technology and still very expensive. Costs of equipment production are very low nowadays but pricing is still “from the moon”...keeping high prices of audio equipment is supporting monopoly in both, showbiz and audio equipment market. Nearly 20 years of plugins development also didn’t change much...since 20 YEARS they sell the best sounding plugins (as advertised) but somehow plugins still sound bad or close to the analog sound...
