I'm looking through textbooks and internet references all day, but this is the only one that's helpful. I love how he made it very simple. (Unlike the textbooks that gave me complicated explanations.) I wish professors nowadays would be more like him.

Who would have thought that you can still learn so much with the crude visual aids of early television. And what are trig tables, isn't that what slide rules are used for. Thanks so much for sharing. This was one of the best videos I have seen on vectors and power factors even if it is so old. Hey, the rules of physics haven't changed much since then.

calculators don't use trig tables... But you can go look them up.

I was being satirical, they didn't have low cost small calculators back then, just tables and slide rules. If you knew how to use a slide rule, you could calculate the trig functions. I always carried my slide rule with me in the sixties and into the early seventies, it could do marvelous things, but my phone can run circles around my old slide rule today.

Chuck: Went to trade school after graduating from high school back in '71with only basis math skills and the will to learn. My teachers were great, they taught me all the types of circuits, how they worked and the math to figure out values using my slide rule. Looking at my old books, I'm amazed I learned and understood all those equations.

Yes the sign convention for phase angle is inconsistent. In the graphical representation he shows the phasor that represents capacitor current leading the applied voltage but in the phase plot he shows it lagging as phase angle increases. There should be negative sign in front phase angle values.

The benefit or practicality of this method of phasor representation of sinusoidal signals is that it enables ohm's law (introduced in DC circuit analysis but extended here to also include and quantify the 2 types of reactances for the general concept of impedance) to also be valid and applicable for quantitative analysis of circuits powered with ac sources that include not only resistance but also the effects of both inductance (from inductors) and capacitance (from capacitors) operating at steady state. The Euler formula is the theoretical basis for the use of phasors to analyze ac circuits operating at steady state. Or put another way it's Euler's formula that allows ohm's law to take on it's more glorified and generalized form of frequency dependent and phase shifting impedance that furthers DC circuit analysis techniques to be applicable to ac circuits that, in addition to resistors, also include the energy storage elements of inductors and capacitors.

Should point out the implicit sign convention assigned based on the corresponding lead and lag quantities of current relative to an applied voltage input as a function of time. In this case there is only a leading phasor to represent the capacitive related current. He's got some strange sign convention for current because capacitor current should be negative when the capacitor is discharging (voltage dropping with time). Oh, he's plotting the current delivered by the capacitor not the current delivered to the capacitor.

nothing but a fine way to teach to the point. some teachers and professors need to speak up, write neat. Not trying to be critical but students need to learn to pass. Sad.

There's something odd in his, effectively time, plots of current and voltage. He shows capacitor voltage (given by Ir) leading capacitor current. This is behavior consistent with an inductor and not a capacitor so I suspect he's actually plotting electron flow to the top plate of the capacitor. He should show an arrow to indicate this in the top branch to the capacitor . In a " modern" eli the ice man circuit analysis the conventional current would be negative as the capacitor voltage drops with time not positive as he shows shows.

His time domain behavior and phasor representation are inconsistent. In the phasor representation he shows capacitor current sinusoid leading the voltage sinusoid and this is correct but in the time domain he shows the sinusoid behavior of the capacitor current lagging behind the sinusoid voltage in time. I was confused until now. The source of my confusion is the interpretation of the plot. The plot he shows is a phase plot that shows past behavior in time. For future time the past time plots move to the right and the current instantaneous behavior occurs at the vertical axis. This is not explicitly stated in this video and is definitely a source of confusion. The plot he shows serves as a bridge between the phasor representation in the complex plane and traditional time domain plots where time increases to the right and the curves remain stationary as with a sweep triggered oscilloscope.
