In Australia, is football soccer as it is in the UK? Or is it rugby? I'm Canadian and our football is the same as American football with slightly different rules. Soccer is soccer the same as football in the UK.

Football in Australia *can* sometimes refer to what Americans call soccer/what Britons call football, especially when speaking to an anglicised or cultivated Australian - but note that most Australians saying football will be referring to ‘Aussie rules’ football which is its own thing, too - with a ball more akin to rugby. Some to obviate this copy Americans in the use of the word soccer to help with the distinction. As do the Irish. Ultimately they’re all football, even Rugby; the full name of which is Rugby Football Union. Source, a Briton with an Australian 1/2 brother.

@@cathy7861 the general default sport people in Australia will refer to when they talk about football or footy for short will vary between the different states and territories. In Queensland, New South Wales and Canberra it would be Rugby League while in the rest of the country it would be Aussie Rules.
