Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple is one of the largest Bagavathi temples in Kerala located in Thrissur City.Sakthan Thampuran ordained the temples into two groups, namely "Paramekkavu side" and "Thiruvambady side" for Thrissur Pooram which is the biggest festival in South India and Kerala. These two groups are headed by the principal participants, Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple at Thrissur Swaraj Round and Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple at Shoranur road. The two temples are hardly 500 metres apart.[1]Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple is one of the two groups participating in Thrissur Pooram.[2] The Paramekkavu temple devaswom have a school known as Paramekkavu Vidya Mandir at MLA road near Kutoor and one KG section near to the temple itself.
Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple is one of the largest Bagavathi temples in Kerala. It is the rival of Shri Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple while participating in the Thrissur Pooram, which is the biggest temple festival and socio-cultural event in Kerala. Legend says that a Karnavar (elder member of a prominent nair family) of the Kuruppal Tharavad u used to visit Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy regularly. When he became old, he decided to make a final visit and to discontinue his further visits. He sought permission of the Goddess for the same through his prayers and returned. On his return journey, he took rest below an Ilanhi tree near Vadakkumnathan temple. When he tried to take his palmyrah umbrella, he could not take it as it fixed on the earth. A devaprasna revealed the presence of Goddess Bhagavathy in the umbrella and the Karanavar arranged to worship the Goddess there. When Vadakkunatha temple was renovated and expanded the chaithanya (divine powers) of Goddess was shifted to its present location below a Paro tree. Since the Goddess was consecrated below a Paro tree, the Goddess came to know as Parokkavu Bhagavathy, later altered as Paramekkavu Bhagavathy. As he original seat of the Goddess was beneath the Illanhi tree at the Vadakkunatha temple, the first lit of temple lamp is shown in the direction of Illanhi tree every day. The famous Illanhi Thara Melam in connection with Thrissur Pooram is in reverence of Goddess. The idol of the Goddess Paramekkavu Bhagavathy was a wooden idol (daru silpa). It was found that the wooden idol was damaged and hence decided to make a new wooden idol. The newly carved daru silpa (wooden idol) of Goddess having eight arms and in sitting posture was had been consecrated in 1997. A divine funeral was given to the old daru silpa idol observing Jeeva Kalasam ritural.
Time of worship:04.00 to 11.00 hrs and from 16.00 to 20.00 hrs.
Temple architecture in Kerala is different from that of other regions in India. The temple roofs are steep and pointed, and covered with guttertiles. The shape of the roof is in accordance with the plan of the sanctum below. With a circular plan, one sees a conical roof, while with a square plan the roof is pyramidal. The roof is constructed with wood and is covered with guttertiles.The central sanctum of a temple is referred to as the Sree Kovil. It is surrounded by a cloistered prakara, pierced at one or more cardinal points with a gopuradwara. The cloistered prakaram has a namaskara mandapam located directly in front of the sanctum. This prakaram also houses subsidiary shrines.The temple walls are made with laterite stone masonry plastered in mud and lime. Murals are seen on several of these temple walls.
According to the legends, a head of the Nair family, who was an ardent follower of Goddess Bhagavathy visited the temple everyday. However, due to his old age, he was having difficulties in travelling. On his last visit, he prayed to the Goddess and on his way back the goddess seemed to have imbibed in his umbrella. Later, a temple was built on the premises where the man rested on his way and put down the umbrella.
Dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple is a renowned temple situated in Thrissur, Kerala where Goddess Durga is worshipped in Bhagavathy form. The temple is famous for the popular Thrissur Pooram festival. The temple complex is made of two shrines: Paramekkavu and Melekkavu where the principal deity is Goddess Bhagavathy. The idol of the Goddess Paramekkavu Bhagavathy was a wooden one (daru silpa). The newly carved wooden idol of Goddess with eight arms in sitting posture was consecrated in 1997. Other than the main shrines, there are shrines in the temple complex dedicated to Lord Ganapathy, Lord Veerabhadra (Lord Siva) and the idols of Brahmarakshas and Nagas are also installed and worshiped in the temple.

അഞ്ചു കൊല്ലം മുൻപ് പാറമേക്കാവിൽ തൊഴുവാൻ പോയപ്പോൾ ദേവിയുടെ കോലസ്വ രൂപം ഞാൻ സ്വപ്നത്തിൽ കണ്ട ഭദ്ര കാളീ രൂപവുമായി നല്ല സാമ്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അത് കണ്ടു തൊഴാൻ എനിക്ക് വല്ല്യ ഇഷ്ട മാണ്. അന്നൊരിക്കൽ ദേവി ഇരിക്കുന്ന രൂപ ത്തിൽ പരിപുർണ്ണ നഗ്ന യായി മനുഷ്യ സ്ത്രീ യെ പോലെ കണ്ടു ഞാൻ പകച്ചു പോയി. പാറമേക്കാവ് ഭഗവതി ഭക്തരെ എങ്ങനെയാണ് പരീക്ഷിക്കുക എന്നറിയില്ല.., സൂക്ക്ഷിച്ചു പോകുക. അമ്മേ ശരണം.
