Both came from a broken family and were adopted by John. John kept Rip close and made him a fieldhand while he pushed Jamie away turning him into a lawyer which John hates. Just like Beth said about Rip to Kayce “he is exactly what our father turned him into.”

Is this show more of a Western or a soap opera? Yellowstone was a Western for three seasons but turned into a slow soap opera for the last two seasons, so I'm not sure what to expect from its spinoffs.

This was so powerful. Spencer's look turns to serious when she delivers the 'romance' line, they fell in love right then and there
@christopherlyons5900
@christopherlyons5900 Жыл бұрын
I think at first he's associating her with the bored upper class English wife on the prowl he met shortly before, who tried to seduce him before she fell prey to a prowling leopard. That woman was only interested in his body, and while many men would be just fine with that, Spencer is bored by it. He's been getting looks like that from girls since he was a teenager. The thrill is long gone for him. But then Alex looks past the exterior, much as she likes it (she's probably also a bit bored with men only seeing her exterior), and looks right into his soul. He's not so much turned on as frightened. She's looking at him the same way some of those predators he hunts for a living do. But she sees him. For real. It's not about exteriors at all. Those eyes are saying "And where have you been all this time? I've been waiting." My theory is, her friends weren't interested in Spencer until she pointed him out to them, so that they would ask her to go chat him up. She didn't expect anything serious to come of it. Not consciously, at least. Look at the way Spencer keeps avoiding eye contact with her. He's more impressed than he lets on, gives her little side glances here and there, but he has been avoiding any serious connection with anyone at all for a while now. These actors really know how to work together. I wonder how many takes they had to do for this scene? Falling in love happens by degrees, but let's say that moment of full eye contact is where they first connected, and the connection gets deeper as they go.

@@sjacrane He's assuming she's going to marry the skinny guy, in spite of her clear desire to bolt, and he really does not want to bring a woman with him on a dangerous hunt, when the last Englishwoman (married not engaged) who hit on him got taken by a leopard. He still needs some persuading she's on the level, and she's well on the way by the time the episode is over. Look at this guy. Girls have been hitting on him since he hit puberty. That's nothing new. But the way she looked him in the eye, saw something none of the others ever saw--that's new. He's looking for someone like his aunt Cara, who'd jabber away in the kitchen to her lonely orphaned nephew while he just listened. He wants more than beauty. He needs somebody with a brain, and a whole lot of spirit. Somebody who can cozen him out of his broody moody seclusion. She's the one.

This scene perfectly shows why men and women NEED each other to live a prosperous life.

The Man-eaters of Tsavo were two maneless male lions who selectively preyed upon railroad workers in the late 19th century. Both were killed in December of 1898. Spencer says he was 5 at the time, and because of his current profession, it's a date he'd know. This is 1923. That makes Spencer 29-30 years old. I know this clashes a bit with some other things we've been told about the interim between 1883 and this show, but tough luck. I believe this scene more than I believe some cobbled together blurry Dutton family chronology. Taylor Sheridan isn't always very careful about stuff like that, because he doesn't really care about it. He wrote that line and filmed it because it was just too good to pass up. And because that was, in fact, Brandon Sklenar's approximate age when he filmed this. So he's older than Alex (assuming she's about the same age as Schlaepfer), but not by that much. Two year difference, max. They are of a generation. And yes, the romantic in me declares, destined to meet. This really does deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as any legendary movie meeting between star-crossed lovers. May their stars get uncrossed in season two.

The man eating Hyena mentioned was also a real incident, I will go with the established time line, remember his parents died when he was maybe 6ish? and we KNOW they died in the 1880's so no way he was born in 1893

@@deanfirnatine7814 We were told James died in 1893, Margaret not long after. So that's a minor error on your part. Easy to get confused, isn't it? But yes, Spencer seems to be well along by then. Maybe ten (five year olds don't herd cattle on horseback), meaning he was born not long after they got to Montana. That was the official chronology. And my senes of the matter is, Sheridan threw that out the window here, and told us to go with it. He didn't make a mistake--he decided the earlier info was a mistake. He didn't want to cast someone who credibly looked 40. Or to age him with makeup. Once he saw Sklenar, he just decided that's how old Spencer is. It really doesn't work. Why was someone that age off fighting in WWI? Spencer has to be younger, for the character to make sense. Still finding himself. Still waiting for the love of his life, even though women head for him like flies to honey (though he's more vinegary in his reaction, before Alex gives him The Look). You care about this shit. Sometimes I care about this shit. Sheridan doesn't care at all. That's why suddenly we're going to meet a present-day Dutton, played by Matthew McConaughey, who has never been seen or even mentioned in passing before. That's why we see the Dutton graves, but we don't get very good looks at most of them. He's going to change what he has to change to tell the stories. Go with it. Or watch something else. Spencer was five when the Man-Eaters of Tsavo were killed. Sheridan isn't stupid. He looked up the date. It didn't just happen to make Spencer's age the same as Sklenar's. And the little post-coital scene on the ship, after the impromptu wedding, where Alex mentions their age difference, and Spencer responds "Who says I'm older?" A wink is as good as a nod. I don't always agree with Sheridan's choices as a storyteller either. But I've watched enough of his stuff to know they're all very very deliberate.
