I've been listening to Parasomnia for the past couple of days, and as a fan with collected expectations, I have been absolutely blown away by Parasomnia. They deliver the right level of nostalgia and freshness. They are and will always been Dream Theater, so it's cool to get their signature sound back and so awesome to see Portnoy back again helping with vocal melodies. Super heavy album with some nice ideas and amazing mix - Portnoy never sounded this good. Got so hyped about Parasomnia I had to grab it on vinyl. I'm excited to see them live this March!

Great review man, can't wait to listen to this in its entirety. A Broken Man for me was DT's best song in over a decade, so if that's the weaker of the lot, then this is an absolute banger. I loved TOT and Black Clouds as well.

Honestly looking back, my favorite album without Portnoy is The Astonishing, although it wasn't well received in that Era where most of the newer fans came along with the self titled Era. It almost never gets mentioned even by the band, like when someone asks questions about a concept album it's like Voldemort or something the album that shall noire be named.. lol

Exactly, their last truly Prog album imo. Astonishing, dramatic turn and Distance are all great albums and highly underrated but especially Astonishing. All 3 of these albums I enjoy more than Parasomnia but the new one is def better than Self Titled and View.

The new DT album definitely exceeded my expectations! It's great to hear Mike behind the kit again. I am also looking forward to the IQ album 'Dominion' which comes out next month!

This is the second positive review I've seen of this album before it officially releases, and your coverage definitely gives me the impression that the first review I saw wasn't just a product of hype. Makes me feel very ready to spin this in a couple hours.

Dude you hit the NAIL on the head, and I've been telling my friends this for YEARS. That's the difference. Each record under Portnoy felt like a musical family, shared essence, strong identity on the album it's on. But the ones after Portnoy left (other than Astonishing, which had a super defined concept) the songs could almost have been interchanged between albums and it wouldn't have mattered. Songs just felt wayward, almost like they were ALL lacking strong identity, and almost felt like songs a band *trying* to sound like Dream Theater would write.

I have one thing to ask you and all other dream theater fan (I was a big fan many years ago) one question. Do you not wish that they did something different? To me this album sounds like dream theater did an album inspired by dream theater and nothing else. There is of course nothing wrong with that! It is great that they have found their sound! But do you never get tired of that sound and wish that they did something fresh?

Haven't heard the new album yet. I wish you wouldn't have mentioned what Dead Asleep is about, as I like to try and figure things out for myself, but I forgive you. 😁 I will have to say though, that the Mangini era albums are my favorites in the DT catalog. Illumination Theory is not a ripoff from Count of Tuscany whatsoever. ADTOE is my least favorite of those five albums, yet it's still a great record. Looking forward to hearing Parasomnia many times..

That is the problem I have with DT. They regurgitate themes, lyrics and songs. I will listen to it but I am not expecting much.

Waited until late night to be released on spotify. Listened once. Not too good. Too much refubrished material, did not get emotional touch with album. Too much one-dimensional instumentals. Few good moments, best one last song epic especially piano part which reminded me of scenes from memory but did not sounded refubrished. Tommorow I will give it another take
