Damn, seeing To The Bone at the bottom was a surprise to me, because it might be my favorite 😅

It's grown on me a lot over time, especially after seeing how amazing Detonation and Song of Unborn are live. Can't say the same for Future Bites yet...

great video man!! unfortunately i don't vibe much with the two last SW albums, can't say i'm really looking forward to the next one.. hope he suprises me though!!! i've got a special love for to the bone because seeing him live and listening to those songs was one of the best concert moments i've ever had.. refuge specially was amazing!! steven probably doesn't have many good memories of this concert here in são paulo though.. i remember him saying he had stomach problems, he soldiered through the entire set!!!! it was amazing.. my album order would be something like hand cannot erase -> raven -> to the bone -> grace for drowning -> insurgentes -> the future bites -> harmony codex (need to listen to the last one more though) lastly, i would like to encourage everyone to listen to 'a door called summer", a great to the bone outtake, one of my favs of wilson's whole career, outstanding stuff, another lovely tune from this era is the andy partridge penned 'how big the space', it has a nice early floyd vibe. keep up the great work man!!!

I also think Raven is his absolute best solo album... in most of these kind of lists that I've seen HCH comes first, but IMHO Raven is flawless and full of outworldly musicianship. Guthrie Govan's solo on Drive Home is one of the most emotionaly beautiful things I've ever listened to.

this would be a very tough one to rank, my middle 3 picks in particular are liable to completely shift around depending on my mood (I would need to give a few good hard listens to really pin my feelings down, some real apples-to-oranges comparisons here) but at this moment I'd probably go Insurgentes < The Future Bites

One thing I learned from this video and the comments….I like Harmony Codex more than the average SW fan. I find it to be as strong as HCE, Raven or Grace. Just my opinion though. Always interesting how music presented in the album format can hit folks differently.

TTB was the first SW album I heard back in 2017 when it was recommended to me by a friend. I liked it so much I bought all his solo albums, the PT albums, Storm Corrosion & the Blackfield albums. Whilst IMO there are no bad solo records, for me, Insurgentes, Grace, Raven & HCE are on another level compared to the last 3. I do like the fact though that all his albums are different, although the forthcoming release will undoubtedly be prog & to a certain extent I feel it is pandering to his long time fan base, plenty of whom do not like his direction of travel of late. Seems to me as if he is frightened of losing his core audience, whereas the true innovators in music couldn’t care less. Just my opinion & I will probably end up loving it.

I do think though he is in a tough spot because when he’s doing his more electronic stuff all of his old fans complain that it’s not prog rock and if he does more of his old type stuff he gets the reverse.
@daneng3641

He hasn't done as true progressive album in 10 years, so I think you can hardly call it pandering to come back to his roots after so long. I confess I'm more enamored with the progressive albums, but I'm also glad he tries to challenge his audience's expectations. I think most of us our onboard for these more provocative albums. It's just a vocal minority that bitches and moans when he doesn't do Raven over and over. He's still filling decent-sized concert venues.

Nice ranking, thank you for the video! I think there is no "correct" list 🙂For me Hand Cannot Erase is number one - especially I like to listen to 5.1 dolby mix on blu-ray edition - it's mindblowing. I think even the instrumental versions of the tracks included on that blu-ray are great. The rest of the list for me best-to-worst would be this: Grace for drowning, Insurgentes, The Raven, Harmony Codex, To The Bone, The Future Bites. The last two would be almost interchangeable but for the Pariah song 🙂

For me #1 is easily Grace for Drowning. Raven is close, but Grace for Drowning has the perfect album structure and track sequencing. Kinda works as a loose concept album/rock opera too, about someone going from depression to violent insanity after losing the love of their life (though I’m not sure how intentional that was). Future Bites is also super underrated. The lyrics are pretty cringe in a few places, but that was true on Blank Planet as well. Personal Shopper is an excellent pop track, it's basically Steven Wilson's Blue Monday

It feels like with TtB we did not listen to the same album. Permanating is popy and not that good. But other than that I feel like the songs are a bit more straight forward rock. He also wrote most of that album on guitar. The TFB project in general (there where quite a few songs released seperatly) has one of my favorite SW songs in Anyone But Me.

I think you misrepresent what HCE is. It is is not actually supposed to be telling the story of the girl who goes missing without anyone noticing. That was simply the news story that inspired it. The album itself is a much more general reflection on the isolation of modern Western culture.

I loved The Raven that refused to sing, so tried a couple of his other albums and they just didn't grab me, they never get played and I stopped buying. I won't buy the new one unless you say it is better that Raven.

Hey we have identical rankings! It’s really a shame that To the Bone is such a forgettable album imho, because Pariah has one of my favorite choruses in the whole discography. HCE was my favorite for a while after it released, but ultimately The Raven captures that prog spirit that I love more than any of the others.
