I vaguely remember somewhere in one of the games had “Bills garden” which did have relatively rare Pokémon. I might be misremembering this however. But if it’s correct, it proves the idea that the player character (Red) does not have access to all locations in the game that other characters do have access to. Which reasons where some NPCs receive Pokémon well outside of the normal level. Such as Lance low level dragonite for example.

I vividly remember playing Pokemon Blue on Christmas Day of 1998, getting poisoned by a Weedle, and rushing to my Dad terrified that I'd broken my Gameboy when the screen started flashing as I walked. The game never indicates to the player that's going to happen, so you sort of have to just figure it out. A lot of game mechanics worked like that in Gen I, which feels a bit funny because these days one of the biggest criticisms I hear of modern Pokemon is that apparently the games do way too much handholding.
@0potionАй бұрын
I was in almost the exact same situation except luckily I had really good deductive reasoning skillsat a very young age. So I was in the process of walking to my parents when it clicked on my mind that it must have something to do with the fact that my pokemon just got poisoned. Turned up the volume and noticed that every couple steps was when it did it.

I basically learned to read german with pokemon. Noticed the usage of desto, this word was new to me. Never heard it ever but it was used so many times til gym3. I remember asking my aunt who spoke better german then my parents what desto means, she couldn help. Had to ask my cousins what this means since they are older and are the first to learn german. To them „desto" was also new but they made sense of it by reading the whole textboxt. I never got a explanation to it tho, i was curios for a long time and the ONLY reason why i started reading all the textbox was because i got stuck at misty so i searched up for clues and noticed the word. To comeback to this topic!!! Gen1 really teach you much, you were alone on your journey even the first 2 cities and their supposed turtorial helpful npcs playtrought werent much. So this absence made me learn to read properly 😂

When I was a kid stepping into Viridian Forest for the first time, I heard the music and felt the spooks. I fought a wild Metapod and knocked it out on accident, then some extra text showed up about how I leveled up and here's some numbers getting bigger. I said "ugh, stupid numbers don't mean anything, go away!" I was playing Blue, my brother was playing Red, and my mom was making dinner thankful that these animal games seemed to be entertaining us. I really didn't let her know how much she meant to me.

5:39 the defining characteristic of the Viridian Forest theme is the use of the devil's interval...also called a tritone. It's a chord that consists of two notes that are two semitones apart (e.g., C and F-sharp). The result is a rather uneasy sound that isn't pleasing to the ear...perfect for a creepy forest maze filled with hostile monsters and trainer battles.
@ItsJustKayaАй бұрын

The episode of the anime where Ash catches Pidgeotto and Caterpie was my first exposure to the entire Pokemon franchise back in the fall of 1998. As for "fans of the games questioning the logic of it", well... the first few episodes came out in the US and Canada approximately 2-3 weeks before the English release of the Game Boy games

I miss those days. Not for nostalgia. For what games were. I genuinly miss those days before internet like yes, i cant live without it now. My patience got worse which each, so i cant sit down without a phone for a long time without either falling asleep or me beeing stuck with thoughts but those days with slow, extremly expensive internet made each game a journey. On any current game no matter the genre, i can now just look up the solution and be done. Back then, misty was my rival. Back then she was the reason why i dont like charizard or squirtle, she is the reason what shaped me as a fan😅 In every online game especially RPG genre i feel sad that majority of noobs dont really explore the game on their own. Forget the game. They dont use their UI.
@chrisclifton192Ай бұрын
@ 100%. Having to figure it out was the best part. I watched one day as my best friend managed to navigate rock tunnel in the dark unaided. It was amazing. The internet has ruined us all. I attempt game puzzles about 3 times now days, and then look up the answer if I can’t solve it. It’s the worst.

I love this series, keep them going! They are nostalgia trips for me, covering both the old games and anime. And using the right artwork is a perfect little detail. Next area, Rock Tunnel for sure. I don't think there is much else to cover. Perhaps the cycling road? It's not really a dungeon or special place like the powerplant of Cinnibar mansion, but has lots of content in both the games and apperances in the anime. Diglett's Cave is too small to be its own thing I guess.
@SomeBlokeOrWhateverАй бұрын
Veridian forest being gone in GSC always read to kid me as a sort of warning about deforestation. The forest a shadow of its former self after only 4 years. And the music from the previous games playing, as a whispered reminder of what once was.
@DeepintheSeadraАй бұрын
What about lavender town in gen 2 then ?
@SomeBlokeOrWhatever7 күн бұрын
@DeepintheSeadra ALSO a quiet warning about what is lost in modernisation, as a village that was once a spiritual place devoted to honouring the dead is now just another modern city. The graveyard replaced by a radio tower. The music is less gloomy, as the radio pipes in cheerful tunes to keep people in a good mood, but the first notes of the original tune still whisper of what was lost when the city changed.

It was impossible for anyone in the 90s to not know Pikachu was in Viridian Forest. It's much more normal to not know something simple, like where to catch Abra or where the Power Plant is, or to not be patient enough to train a Kakuna with Struggle. EVERYONE knew about Pikachu being in Viridian Forest. EVERYONE knew it was 5% encounter rate. EVERYONE knew to battle 100 Pokémon in Viridian Forest, and you could get it in 50 or 20 Wild Battles. Pikachu was everyone's first "look in the wild grass repeatedly for the Rare Pokémon." Pikachu was basically the first Legendary and taught everyone a lot of essential game mechanics and strategies.

The reason why some pokemon were absent from Yellow despite being in the anime (like Beedrill) is because a lot of more "antagonistic" pokemon were uncatchable. I assume either to make any fights against those pokemon seem more unique, or to prevent children from trying to emulate villains like Team Rocket. Also im surprised you didnt mention the important lore from the Pokemon Adventures manga regarding Viridian Forest. Trainers who are born near the forest have a much higher affinity with Pokemon, even being able to communicate with them. They also gain certain abilities like healing. It gives the forest a much more mystical feel and may explain further why some strange pokemon are found there.
@slitheringswamp5352Ай бұрын
An interesting thing about beedrill and butterfree from a lore perspective is that they make the power levels of the other pokemon more impressive. You have an aggressive hawk sized wasp with venomous stingers on its front legs and an eagle sized butterfly that sheds poisonous scales when disturbed, and neither of these pretty formidable animals are considered strong compared to the monsters you will face on your Pokémon journey

Fun fact: Viridian forest has a special power in the adventures manga, childrens who are born in the forest gets powers like supers strength, healing, and telekenisis, people like Yellow, Lance, and giovanni are born there so thats why they have incredible abilities like other trainers. Have to admit Viridian Forest did rather scare me as a kid but I suppose in some ways it's understandable. I mean you're a new trainer with weak Pokemon you're not really too sure what you're doing yet and all of a sudden after leaving the comforts of home and the easy, open grassy roads you're in this big, dark spooky dense forest with tall trees and half the Pokemon in there want to poison your Pokemon and you get trainers everywhere just waiting to ambush you..

I love Viridian Forest Pikachu is here its electric attacks are so powerful especially against all the early game flying types Butterfree can be evolved from Metapod here, it gets really strong stat moves Sleep Powder and Stun Spore and psychic type attack COnfusion which is powerful and good against a lot of common poison types. Beedrill is here it looks cool and is easy to evolve it gets the only STAB bug moves Twineedle and PIn Missile. Can be surprisingly useful against a lot of the games Pokemon because in gen 1 bug is good against poison its super good against most grass types bc they are also dual poison. In yellow I think you can catch an evolved Pidgeotto like Ash did in the show, flying is a pretty useful type.
