Explaining the concept of the video, Ed said: "I wanted to make a video inspired by movies like Harvey, where the main character has an imaginary friend who’s a giant rabbit that no one can see. There’s also a book I read my daughters where sadness is encapsulated by an imaginary creature. "Often sadness is something that follows you around, engulfing the rooms you’re in, and you can feel and see it, but no one else around you can. So, I decided to create my own big blue monster for the video. "He gets bigger and bigger as the video goes on, ‘til he takes up whole rooms, and is all I can see, just like sadness."💙

February was the month that Ed found out his pregnant wife had a tumour. She was unable to have the surgery to fix it until after their daughter was born. A week after getting that news, his best friend passed away suddenly. Jamal Edwards was the man who gave Ed his big break and they’ve been best friends ever since, his death and Cherry’s illness made Ed reevaluate his life. The original album was 10 years of work, finishing his Mathematics theme with the final piece. He scrapped that and wrote the new version of ‘Subtraction’ based on his feelings of grief, despair, sadness etc. over a couple of months. The blue monster is like the grief following him around. I lost my 16yr old Son in 2009 after a tragic accident. This song hit me hard, I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the album 💙

When you have problems within yourself. You have to open your eyes and see it. That is starting point of getting rid of the monster. I think that's what it means

The next album is subtract. This tune is the 1st single from -. And the blue monster represents grief. He showcases how even when you are alone with people grief just follows you around and in the mv we see other people with other kinds of monsters which symbolises that each and every person has grief. In the end ed looks up to the blue monster which symbolises that he finally wants to address grief head on and manage it in his own life:)

i took my sister and niece to finally see ed live last month in pittsburgh (a 4.5 hour drive each way and a very expensive hotel room later it was soooo worth it! 2nd best show i’ve ever seen after electric callboy) anyway… i knew this song was on his set list and told them to prepare themselves as they had never heard it before. we lost our mom to lung cancer in the summer of 2020, and i had this on repeat when it came out because it was the perfect song to help me come to terms with the loss. all 3 of us got the goosebumps and were in tears after the first verse, but by the end we were smiling for her. the talent he has for just making everything better is incredible 💜
