This is pretty much identical to the way my parents attempted to “motivate” me to do my school work. ...and after a full decade of pure hell, I went on and graduated number 2 in my H.S. class of over 600, finished my bachelors degree in 3 years (summa cum laude) and went immediately to an Ivy League grad school. To this day a great deal of my self-worth and happiness depends on my grades, and (more recently) on whether or not my papers get publication.
