In my opinion the points is more about the people we take for granted. It is hard to understand how important some people (or even things) are in your life. Even though they had everything with each other, they found annoying most of their experience. However once they lost each other, they finally started to feel that something is wrong. They begun to realize that these little things and friendships have way more meaning. They started to work together with the other friends, started to be more united, to care more. That is the beauty of Your Name - that it makes you stop and look at the things and people in your own life, and think 'those won't be here forever' and make you care for them so much more.

This movie did WEIRD things to me when I first watched it too! At the end, I was SCREAMING "Please talk to each other!" I was begging for them to find each other again, just like you. This concept of forgetting precious things and losing special memories of someone, just like you quickly forget dreams or just like someone with Alzheimer forgets their loved ones, is so devastating, and this masterpiece of a movie conveys that perfectly. A true 10/10 in my book.
@WolfODonnelfan4 ай бұрын
The weird thing about the whole 'forgetting your dream when you wake up' dilemma, is that there isn't really an issue to begin with if you just train your brain to remember your dreams. I personally remember every dream and can still describe roughly 80% of it several weeks after. Personally, the only thing I needed to do to learn to remember dreams was to always write about every single dream I have in my dream journal. It is hard in the beginning yes, but the more you do it, the better you become at remembering. It's essentially like training a muscle. And on the plus side; now I lucid dream at LEAST once every 2 weeks, if not more.
@renebrose77359 ай бұрын
Some aspects of the film are hard to grasp because of the lack of knowledge about japanese folklore. For example the reason Taki didn't write his name down on her hand, but instead chose "I love you" is because he knew his name would be erased just like his phone entries. "I love you" is a message of love and those are protected by the moon goddess Tsukuyomi hence they showed the moon in that shot as well.
@odorikakeru9 ай бұрын
That is a popular fan explanation, yeah. If Taki has written his name is probably would have been erased, but we will never know, and he definitely didn’t know. He wrote the live message because that’s what he wanted to write. Probably getting across that he loved her was more important to him than her remembering his name.

@@odorikakeruhe wrote a lot of things on paper and none remained so i think he did wrote that on purpose and confess at the same time
@odorikakeru9 ай бұрын
@@Pochitaman30 I’m not following your logic. At the time of the meeting there was no indication that Taki had seen the the things written on paper disappeared and understood that this would happen to anything he wrote (he had only seen diary entries on a phone disappear at this point. I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’m just saying that it’s too much of a narrative leap and Shinkai is too good of a storyteller to do something like this without some mention of it elsewhere in the movie.
@Karthig19879 ай бұрын
No it isn't. It's in their folklore. Do you have anything in the movie against it? It's not a narrative leap. Even the flow of time and the cords stuff is in the show. Also body switching across time is acceptable but this isn't?
@odorikakeru9 ай бұрын
@@Karthig1987 You can’t use “There’s no direct evidence against my theory, therefore my theory is true” as an argument, that doesn’t make any sense. I never said it wasn’t possible or that it contradicts anything; maybe it =is= true, but we can’t substantiate it as there is nothing on the movie directly referencing it. So unless we hear something from Shinkai himself on the matter we have to qualify anything we add on the matter with “Possibly…” or “I think…”, which is not happening here. And as for using Gifu folktales, there are several that absolutely back up what you’re saying, and several more that completely contradict you. That’s what’s so wonderful about Japanese folklore: if you travel across the country and collect enough tales you can find the perfect one to go with any story you want to tell.

"Wow that did weird things to my psyche I can't even put it into words." Honestly, very accurate description of what it feels like watching this for the first time. It's like this weird emotional mix that makes you feel sad/joyful, lost yet hopeful. Like, you're sad that they don't know their history together, but you're overjoyed these two who are destined together find each other, and even though there's an emptiness they're both dealing with, they can now deal with it together cause they're what each other was missing. I remember being so happy at the end of the movie, but being in a really deep, weird place of reflection afterwards 😂

I really liked how you guys commented on what if all the historical tragedies had mystical meanings and causes just like this film. Japan had an enormous earthquake that killed so so many people on March 11th, 2011. This movie depicts how all the people in Japan at that time, wished they had some way to travel in time or switch bodies with someone to tell them that that earthquake was coming. It's also interesting to notice how the ending is 5 years after the commet fall, considering how Your Name was released in 2016, 5 years after the earthquake. Great reaction guys, I really love how you both catch the smallest details. It's so satisfying to watch!!❤

Two other really great movies by Makoto Shinkai that I highly recommend are 5 Centimeters per Second and The Garden Of Words. Weathering With You and The Place Promised In Our Early Days are also good. The Garden Of Words and Weathering With You also take place in the same universe as this movie. I can't really recommend Children Who Chase Lost Voices and Voices of a Distant Star to someone who isn't a Shinkai fan and wants to watch his entire filmography and haven't watched Suzume yet. One theory about this movie is that Taki writing "好きだ"/"I love you" on Mitsuha's hand was actually what saved the people of the village as any other message, like his name, would have been erased by this supernatural power just like the phone messages and the memories. His love confession however was the ultimate bond between them, so it didn't get erased and Mitsuha remembered the importance of convincing her father of the incoming disaster long enough.

Excellent reaction. Good that you noticed the lore of the red string of fate. There was a Japanese TV show that had a segment on this movie not long after its release as they noticed its popularity among the older generation keeping it in the movie charts (despite the film being marketed to young adults/teens). They invited some older generation folks to a special screening and placed cameras in the movie theatre towards the audience, then interviewed the people afterwards. Needless to say, many of the old folks were in tears, and noted that the "red string of fate" (symbolised in this movie with Mitsuha's ribbon and the dream sequence at the shrine) which is prevalent in Eastern oriental cultures was something they experienced in their own lives - like an invisible bond - some people said they met their spouse/soul mate or found something they were looking for. Here's the segment with subtitles from that Japanese show back then - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYXWkpl_e9CritU

oh and they do get married . This director usually writes novels along with his movies and releases them just before his movies. so in his immediate next movie, Weathering with you , there are cameo scenes of taki and mitsuha in between that five year period and also a separate one of takis granma after that five year period meaning after they met. . The Takis granma cameo , in the novel of the weathering movie(but not in the movie itself) , tells about a picture in her room which shows taki and mitsuha married.

The worlds of "Your name" and "the weathering with you" are parallel worlds. In the world of "the weathering with you", the world changes decisively when Hotaka saves Hina in August 2021, and it rains in Tokyo for the next three years. Therefore, if we assume that Taki and Mitsuha met again on the stairs in Tokyo in April 2022 (in the scene after meeting Okudera-senpai, Taki's notepad says December 2021, and in the scene when he meets Mitsuha, cherry petals are falling, so it is assumed to be the following year), it is strange that it has not rained. On the other hand, the fall of comet Diamato and the plan to evacuate the inhabitants actually took place in the world of "the weathering with you", so it can be said that the two world lines were the same until Hotaka changed history. In any case, I believe that Mitsuha and Taki are destined to be connected to each other no matter what world they live in because of the strong "Musubi" power that led them to save Miyamizu Town from the comet's fall.

Loved the reaction! I was really impressed on how quickly you guys became invested and started to come up with very solid theories! The ending got me again and I teared up with you guys :D There are also a few things worthy to mention about this movie :D 1. Every single frame was drawn by hand (this is also the case for basically any newer movie from the regisseur Makoto Shinkai) 2. Taki wrote "I love you" because it is a much more impactful feeling than just some random name. There was no guarantee that his name would hold any meaning to Mitsuha, so saying "I love you" invoked a much bigger motivation (he probably just wanted to say it real bad too) 3. If you look at the earlier scenes when Mitsuha wrote her name on his body, you can see that the first stroke for her name starts with a curve, however, when she attempts to write her "name" on his hand during kataware-doki, you can see her first stroke was a atraight horizontal line, the same way Taki wrote "I love you" on her hand :)

You brought up an interesting point there.. In all the time I've been watching this movie it never occurred to me that the thread may have been the mechanism by which Mitsuha's parents met.. What I like is the fact that there is already a crater there, presumably an impact from at least 1200 years ago when another, slightly larger part of the comet must have struck - a bit of a hazardous area to be in. Maybe in another 1200 years another, smaller part might hit assuming any of the comet survived this orbit. A fabulous entry from Makoto Shinkai in his catalogue of movies - I love his works and can recommend them all.

The forgetfulness in the movie is also a metaphor for the intensity of emotions we go through during our teenage years, and while it seems like the world is falling apart because of them, life goes on, and after we get more mature, sometimes we barely remember those "world-ending" events like a broken heart or a crush that left to live on another town or whatever.

23:26 There are different ways to say "I" in Japanese, depending on what you are: watashi - neutral, more feminine | watakushi - formal, more feminine | boku - polite, more masculine | ore - informal, more manly. Taki (who usually refers to himself with the informal masculine "ore") would appear to be acting very strange if he came in saying "watashi" (feminine) or "watakushi" (formal) to his close friends. They had to keep glaring until he got it right! 🤣 Japanese have different pronouns for men and women, essentially baking gender differences into the language. When Taki and Mitsuha switch bodies, you can really hear which is which through the words they use.

You guys really caught on to the big themes here. Moreso than I did from first watch. You nailed it how this movie resonates because everyone has a sense of loss but they don’t know what they lost.
@Slaaverin7 ай бұрын
The feeling of loss that Wes is feeling and that many humans are feeling is one of our first "hurt" as souls. It's simply the feeling of loss the soul goes through when it goes into the process of separation from God/Source and goes into a physical incarnation such as in a human body. When we are not incarnated in a body we are our "full self" which means being connected to All that is, having the universe's knowledge, being connected to inconditionnal love of everything, but when we come down into a human incarnation we wear constraints on our consciousness that makes us feel separated from that, and separated from each other, and we feel like we lose our connexion. So feeling this "longing" as a human is perfectly normal because we have the impression we have lost something (we have not, it's only a momentarly illusory perception). That's why when people experience death they feel like they are "going home" and that they don't need anything anymore because they regain their connexion to everything and there is no longer this sense of loss. So you see this feeling of longing will most likely always be present while we are engaged in the human experience, and it's not always bad because it often sends the person on a quest to find the right answers within themselves about the meaning of their lives. This human experience is an alienated state for us, it's like going in outer space and saying oh there's no air up there. The longing will dissipate after we die when we go back to the natural state of our consciousness. And everything everyone is longing for, and that sense connexion we miss, people are looking for it in the outer world, but the truth is that what you are looking for is all already inside your heart if you are willing to look within ✨️💜

watching another reactors reacting to this, and i must say, not many people actually can be as fast as y'all to connect the dots about the 3 years gap. bravo!! also nobody realized about the time difference because the swap is like a dream to them, everything is fuzzy, that's why they only pick up stuff but not the entire thing throughout the movie like the dream that we have everyday, we can't remember all of them. love this reaction

So, we actually do know what happens to Taki and Mitsuha after the film because they make a brief cameo in one of the filmmaker's subsequent movies ("Weathering with You) and are shown as a happily married couple with kids living comfortably in Tokyo.

There's a small, indy movie called "In Your Eyes" that I think you'd enjoy. It's live action but in a similar vein as this movie, with a semi-supernatural link between characters who navigate the situation. It's a really sweet movie, and worth checking out if you like Your Name.

@1:33:02 I watched this movie twice in theaters. Once in subbed like this and the other was dubbed in English (both are amazing) there was a few maybe ~5 people in each screening at that moment that yelled "talk to her damn it!" and more then half cheered when they asked for each others name lol This film had everyone invested and it's even worse for people who knew his previous works because up till this film all of his productions ended with the love interests separated by something giving the viewer the "bad end".

Now there is a movie "Weathering with you" and there is a cameo of both of them (Taki and Mitsuha) at a few points (It's also a good movie)... Spoiler? not sure if it is. not for movie or whatever but their relationship mentioned -------> at the ending of the manga or whatever there is a part where it shows both of them getting married (There are pictures in mitsuha's grandma's apartament/house on the wall), also the creator himself said it, at the Weathering with you introduction. So we know their happy, married and living together, but that's it.

The reason Taki wrote “I love you” on Mitsuha’s hand instead of his name is because he knew that if he would’ve written his name, it would disappear just like their text messages. Everything was disappearing because fate was correcting itself. However, in Japanese lore, the moon god protects messages of love, so by writing “I love you”, the power of the moon god supersedes fate itself and allowed Taki and Mitsuha to remember the feelings they had for each other, even if they didn’t remember just who that other person was. This gave them the strength to press forward and complete their task, thereby undoing the timeline and replacing it with a new one, and allowing them to find each other again someday. Truly a beautiful story told in such a unique and interesting way

The creator of this film Makoto Shinkai earlier in his career made a manga then film called "5 Centimeters Per Second". It was basically this film without the fantasy mystical aspect or comet and had a ending that was totally opposite of this one. Still a good film but you don't get the feel goods at the end. You might want to check out "Weathering With You" and " Suzume No Tojimari" also great films by this creator.

The guy who made this is known for unhappy/disappointing endings so the fact that this one got a happy ending after so many close calls is crazy. Also I'm sure someone has said this, but he made another movie and these two show up together in the background (assumedly a couple, finally!)

You guys should definitely watch Weathering with you, its made by the same person who made Your name but a different plot, and it also gives a somewhat satisfying conclusion to taki and mitsuhas relationship but they're just side characters in this movie (basically theyre a cameo).

Your Name is definitely a movie best watched twice. There are so many small details that you can only really pick up on when you already know what’s going to happen. I’m sure people are already writing lists of these things in the comments section here, but it’s best to just watch it and find them for yourself! It may even be worth a follow-up video with all the little Easter eggs and “Chekhov’s Gun”s you found on the second watch through. I’d definitely watch that!
