It still does not meet the legal requirements for E. Coli, but it is sort of close (2 to 3 times threshold). It is OK for Entorococcus (under threshold). That said, it is not as polluted or dirty as the angry ones want to make it seem. France has been under pouring rain for the best of the last 8 months, with temperatures far below the season average in the recent months, and that has impeded progress on the "bacteria cleaning" front. If you read French, values are published on a weekly basis, just Google "bulletin sur la qualité de l’eau de la Seine".

Im from Montreal. All my life I paid for Olympic games I was too young to remember. The Olympics is the working class paying with their taxes for games most cant afford to go to, so millionaires have a nice event to go watch, and billionaires can make more billions.

As filthy as the Seine may be now, it's nothing compared to what it was in 1880. They called it The Big Stink. They had horses and the horse manure ended up in the river. Human sewage filled the river. Rotting animal corpses floated in it. Their tanneries were set up along the river. Food scraps were tossed into the Seine. The river was so foul that the entire city had a smell so putrid, nauseating and fetid that Paris was notorious for it. Germ theory was in its early stages, and people demanded that something be done about it. It's much better than that now. Also, coliform bacteria in water is reported as "number of bacterial colonies PER 100 mL" rather than the incorrectly stated "number of colonies." "1000 bacterial colonies" by itself is meaningless. Is that per drop, per glassful, or an estimate number of colonies in the whole river? It's ambiguous that way. Number over volume gives a meaningful unit of measurement.

I remember is Brazil that some swimmers withdrew, they were NOT swimming in that. In Spain the yachters were sailing by donkey carcasses. Our Navy Seals swim in poop filled sewage water coming directly from Tijuana into OUR waters, the waters the Seals have to train in. THIS has been happening for years. WAKE UP HUMANS!!!!

France should start growing those large oysters from the Hudson river. Those large oysters can clean a lot of volume but it takes time to grow them and a lot of help to give them a head start. At least clean up a lot first and the oysters will try to keep river clean but it should had been done some dozen yrs ago so that the oysters has time to acclimate and adapt to the Seine's waters. It might take some more decades to consider it clean if the oysters does all of the work but Paris does need a better sewage treatment system. IMO Paris should build at least some more sewage treatment facilities that can use the sewage as fuel as there's a process to turn the crap into methane&activated carbon and maybe even use the urine to turn it into ammonia as alternative fuel to gasoline. The construction for these projects should had at least started several years ago when Paris won the bid to host the Summer Olympics for this year. Anyway the athletes should protest and insists the politicians and Olympic officials to take the plunge first to ensure that its safe enough for them to compete first. IMO the French government should already be preparing the alternative sites specifically for those sports that's supposed to be held in the Seine river. Maybe have the events really far upstream from Paris.

@@curtisthomas2670 They're not supposed to be eaten. Besides you need them to adapt and evolve to the local water chemistry of the Seine. The problem is going to be the deep level of pollution on riverbed's floor. The oysters needs a lot of help so the riverbed needs a lot of dredging to clean it up. Anyway what the French Olympic committee should had done is consider an alternative site and have the events far upstream before Paris' sewage&pollution enters the river.

First: the Seine is very close to meeting the safety requirements. You are blowing this poop thing up out of proportion.... I am ready to bet in the end 12 people will actually do it. Also: most of the funds to clean the Seine were put into building a new sewage system bringing excess rain water into a gigantic reservoir, to avoid any future overflow of the current sewage system into the Seine (as it has been occurring for decades). So the money is not invested JUST for the Olympics, it will benefit the Seine for decades to come. Last, nobody knows the exact motives of the people who initiated and support the poop protest, and I am ready to bet that once uncovered, TYT would not be happy or proud to have "defended" them! Most likely people who hate the Mayor Hidalgo administration for diminishing the place for cars in Paris and being too "social" towards non-white people for their liking... In Qatar, didn't 8,000+ people have to die so a few Corporate Multi Millionaire Footballers (who clearly didn't care), could play games on the graves of some of the poorest people int the world?
