BRAVO FRAN.

Regardless of who should win. A competitor that is being controlled, be it a choke, an arm-lock or a hold, should never stop defending thwir position on a Mate. The dominating party releases and stand up, then you get up. As for the referee, after they yelled Mate, they should have made sure the match is over. Tap the opponent etc. If the choke continued after the Mate, defiantly the person still performing a choke or armlock after the Mate should lose.

I am an outsider to judo but fairly understand the dynamics of high stakes competition so I have to ask - could this not be that the judge was not sure if the japanese athlete had already blacked out and could not tap out, or he actually was concious but was waiting for mate... or that the spanish athlete falsely claims they didn't hear "mate". I'm not sure... this must be a very difficult situation for the judge at this level but perhaps it was a tough but correct call? it feels like we basically don't know who made these choices for what reason..

”MATE” is a command to stop the game. ”HAJIME” is an order to resume the match. ”IPPON” is a declaration that the winner has been decided. In this case, “IPPON” was declared after “MATE” and before “HAJIME” was declared. In boxing terms, it is as if the bell rang and before the bell rang again, both fighters were in their corners when the 10-count began and the winner was decided.

Irrespective of whether they hear the whistle or not, all play after the decision cannot be counted. I can understand the spanish guy's PoV, and even that refs make mistakes - but I cannot understand how the decision cannot be challenged and overturned.

@@marceloisoni9158 As you probably know, judo is not a martial art or a combat sport, but a BUDO, so the purpose of a match is not to hurt your opponent and beat him so that he cannot get up, but to gain the pleasure of knowing his body techniques while appreciating the opportunity of a lifetime with your opponent. Therefore, even during a match, you should never cease to thank your opponent for playing against you. You have probably seen many competitors helping their opponents to their feet or teaching their opponents to bleed after the referee has called "MATE" in a judo match. This is because during a fight, you must always pay close attention to whether there are any abnormalities in the physical condition of yourself and your opponent, and fight in your best condition. (In the self-centered judgment of the Japanese, if you see a fighter worrying about an opponent's injury or pointing out bleeding after "MATE" you can judge that the fighter is following the right master.) The first thing that is taught in judo is ukemi, and this is a clear indication of the characteristics of the art. Athletes who cannot perform ukemi perfectly will accumulate damage to their bodies over the course of a match, making it difficult for them to fight at their best. For this reason, they are not allowed to go up to the tatami by the shihan. Ukemi is important not only for your own sake, but also for your opponent to continue to perform at their best. In the past in Japan, many middle and high school students (121 people) lost their lives due to shime techniques and osoto-gari. In many cases, the students suffered severe brain damage, if not fatalities. Therefore, when they are in middle school, Japanese judo players are taught by their instructors that they must learn shime-waza and feel the tightening of the carotid artery, and that when they feel this sensation, they must always tap their opponent somewhere on the body to signal their surrender. (Because it is so easy to kill a human being, shime-jutsu is prohibited for elementary school students.) On the other hand, those who apply shime-jutsu are also taught to pay close attention to their opponents while they are locked, and to be aware of their surroundings so that they do not miss the referee's call. However, the more inexperienced a player is, the more excited he becomes about the game, and the more he loses his ability to hear the voices of those around him. Who can blame a young player for being so excited about the game that he does not hear "MATE". (Of course, if the fighter continued to intentionally choke the opponent after the “wait”, it would be considered attempted murder or an act of murder, and would be judged by law, not by judo, so I will not go into that here. In the case of martial arts and budo, if a fighter strikes from behind after the bell has rung or after the referee has intervened, it may be considered negligence on the part of the competitor who was caught off guard before coming off the mat and not subject to criminal punishment, but in judo, if the fighter continues to hold intentionally after the “wait” is called, it is prosecuted as attempted murder.) Therefore, the referee must carefully and instantly judge whether the athlete has missed the "MATE", and if there is no intention to let go of the body, he must immediately strike the athlete to make him aware of it, and if he still does not notice, he must forcefully pull him off the body. The technique performed by Garrigós, Kataha-jime (IJF:KHJ) uses the lapel of the judo uniform to exert pressure on the carotid arteries. This technique does not cause unconsciousness by blocking the airway, but by restraining the carotid arteries and preventing blood from flowing to the brain. To prevent this technique, the collar should be placed against the chin to keep it from entering the neck, but if this defense is continued, the airway will continue to be compressed and breathing will become very difficult. Nagayama was waiting desperately for the “MATE” while he was unable to breathe. So, if Nagayama was conscious, he would not miss the word “MATE” from the referee. The moment he heard the “MATE” call, we saw on the video that Nagayama opened his body to the right side in order to stand up. From the timing, we can assume that Nagayama heard the “MATE” call, and at that moment, in order to stand up, he moved his body down to the side, lifted his chin, resumed his breath, which he had previously held, and inhaled fully. Garrigós, on the other hand, was so excited about the match that he did not hear “MATE. For some reason, Nagayama's neck suddenly opened up, and he was so happy not to let this moment slip away because it was his way to victory that he pressed his collar against his carotid artery and continued to press in. Did the referee do what he was supposed to do in this situation? I don't think so. I also feel that the follow-up by the referees afterwards was totally inadequate. So I felt that there was too much lack of education for the referees. Also, did Garrigós' teacher teach Garrigós the importance of paying maximum attention to the referee's calls while locking? To me, that seems to be the biggest problem there. Garrigós or Nagayama may have been at fault, but I personally feel that the mistakes of both players were insignificant and trivial. If an athlete is so absorbed in a match that he misses a referee's call, of course he needs to be instructed, but I do not feel that it is such a crime that he should be permanently banned from the judo world. However, if a referee fails to make appropriate judgments or take appropriate actions in a situation where the life of an player may be at stake, I think he or she should stop being involved in the game and just enjoy watching the matches at home.

I’m Spanish living in Japan and I have great respect for this country. It saddens me to read so many negative comments from Japanese people towards the Spanish athlete. The Spanish athlete already explained on TV that he didn’t hear the word, which is why he continued. Francisco, like Nagayama, loves judo and has practiced it since he was a child. Francisco greatly respects judo and Japan, the birthplace of this sport. Living here, I notice that Japanese people are often very individualistic and hold grudges. You may be familiar with the term “建前”. This is why, in competitions, Spanish people usually excel in team sports while Japanese people excel in individual sports. I believe a society is built with collaboration, not individualism. The problem was with the jury and the organization. The Spanish athlete didn’t decide anything. What the Japanese athlete decided was not to shake hands with the Spanish athlete at the end. Sport should be an example of effort, not hate. Sometimes life is unfair, but we should always be respectful. I am just sharing my opinion and I respect others’ views. I like your content and I hope this helps to see different perspectives.

Shaking hands and thanking people is something you do after a match is over. Suppose you are fighting someone in a boxing match. The gong rings for the end of the first round and you are in your corner receiving instructions from your seconds, The referee suddenly declares your opponent the winner before the gong rings to start the second round. While you are asking the referee to explain what happened, if your opponent asks you to shake his hand, would you do it? I would feel that the game is not over yet, and I would not answer with a handshake. Spaniards might shake hands in this situation, but I don't think Japanese people shake hands unless the game is over. Also, to be a bit formal, in judo, respect for the opponent is a form of courtesy, and a handshake is unnecessary. Of course, some people may shake hands, give hugs or cheek kisses, and I don't blame them at all, However, what must be done is to be polite, and if you neglect to be polite, it is impolite, no matter what you do, whether you give a cheek kiss or not. Don't get me wrong, many Japanese are displeased with Garrigós because he showed no signs of caring about his opponent's physical condition after so many tightening moves, he was insensitive enough to ask for a handshake in that situation, and he never apologized for missing the “MATE” and the lack of an apology for missing the ”MATE.” I don't think I'm that angry about missing the “MATE” itself. (We all do insensitive things and we all make mistakes.)
