You're right--great for figure drawing. I find male model's far more challenging because the defined muscles are much less forgiving when trying to get proportion/relative placement correct. For example--female model's bicep usually flows into the elbow--making the entire arm a long cone shape.. On the male, the bicep's definition means that if you are "off" on the placement of the elbow--even slightly--the entire arm (and sometimes the entire drawing) gets thrown off.

Thankfully he has never cared about being the only boy (or one of the only boys) at the studio, but as he doesn’t get to see many examples of other male dancers in person, I like to show him examples like this. Hugo reminds me of Nikolay Tsiskaridze, when he was young. The 90s was an EXCEPTIONAL time for ballet. Some would even go as far as to say there is no real ballet in the 20th century 😢 sad to hear

If you see Michael Bourne's "Swan Lake" (where the swans are played by males) you get an idea just how incredibly athletic dancers--male and female--have to be. We think about ballerina's like they are delicate, hot house flowers. Funny to think that their dressing room probably smells more like a football locker room than a florist! haha.
