I can’t express adequately how wonderful this trip to flea market was!! Then watching you place these treasures around your home. I love it all. My style has become more minimal… not because U done love a bounty of vintage loveliness, but because I’m getting toooooo old to keep it all dusted. It was a joy to me to watch you do all the finding and placing of your beautiful things!

Angela, I love your eye for beauty in "old" things. I like the word "old" rather than "antique." Old speaks to me of a glorious past. You have a beautiful gift of creativity. I loved everything you purchased and the beautiful treasures your Mom has given you. You are a treasure.❤

I recently was gifted a bundle of linens made by my 4x great aunt and I absolutely agree on old textiles. It is so amazing to hold something somebody spent hours sewing and embellishing by hand. While I sew, I do not have the patience to make hand spun lace to put into pillowcovers like she did. I suppose in a time before tv for a woman who chose not to get married there was lots of down time. I have pictures of her standing with her sisters and my 3x great grandfather. Him in a suit and the ladies in their 1800s day dresses. So neat to have a piece of history in my house. Anyway, beautiful things as always.
@katharinaboyer32753 жыл бұрын
How wonderful! I have many handmade doilies of all sizes and patterns made by great aunts and quilts from great - grandmas, grandmas, and aunts. I treasure all of them and have always loved handmade items. I have a passion for old things especially, family heirlooms. I’m enjoying this community.
@rebeccaturner83403 жыл бұрын
@@katharinaboyer3275 that's wonderful! I have a dolly my great grandmother made my grandmother and she's the most darling thing. My great great grandmother died when I was 13 and I always thought it was so neat going to the reunions at her house to hear all the family stories. There's a national park near her childhood home that is now a prairie, but once had been a man made waterway so she remembered the steam ships carrying cargo going through. Amazing how much changes in a short span of time. I ended up with a lot of family heirlooms because many of my cousins are just uninterested in the family history. I personally love the idea of a lovingly made and treasured item continuing to be useful and the gesture remembered.

I agree. I prefer to shop alone unless I have a partner that likes to split up but check back in with each other before we get to far ahead of one another. I have one friend that likes to shop this way. Which is nice that way you have someone to drive with, have lunch with and to be honest with you when you fine that one item you need to be told to put back!

I can't believe Wisconsin has so many cool thrift stores and flea markets! Thrift stores in Chicago are big boxes of used clothes and electronics and the closest flea market sells cheap plastic housewares and giant bags of tube socks, not vintage quilts from Belgium. Ironically, you have to travel out of the city to find the treasures.

You are so smart, Angela! You went to the early and late Elkhorn flea markets… I went to the scorching hot one in July! Next year, I’m going to do what you do! I am completely in love with vintage textiles as well; I inherited many from my grandparents and keep expanding my collection. Birds and birdhouses have been a passion of mine for years as well. And hats and costumes? Don’t get me started! I would buy vintage hats at antique stores when I was in high school AND I WORE THEM! (I was that quirky girl who wore vintage clothes!) I still have a collection of hats and costume pieces, though I don’t wear them so much anymore. 😉

Absolutely everything you bought is amazingly beautiful!! I feel the same about old things. It's all in the soft faded colours, the stains and the tattered edges. I'm very interested in trying to make new things look old but it's not easy, it takes a lot of experimenting. I especially LOVED the bundle of textile. All the different whites, that aren't white at all, so beautiful together ❤❤❤

If you find a shade that has a shape you like, then it doesn't take much to remove the fabric and recover. I also saw a really pretty little shade that had been draped with an old fancy lady's handkerchief, and you can find those fairly easily. The item that I probably would have had to bring home was a fifties looking tablecloth that was under a stack of books. I just love those. Totally different from anything you find today. Can't look at those without thinking of my grandmother. Oh! and lace curtains! .... and iron floor lamps!... and doilies on the backs of chairs. LOL

As a lover of Joan of Arc, I hope you’ve seen the Joan of Arc Chapel on the campus of Marquette University in Milwaukee. It is said to be the chapel that she prayed in before going to war. It was reassembled in 1966, my first year on campus. It always feels like a sacred place, a must when I revisit Milwaukee. I think you would appreciate it.
