After having paddled a section of Park Creek in 2022, I knew a return visit to explore more of this beautiful mountain stream was due to happen at some point in the future. Fast forward to 2024, when I was able to make a plan with Tara and Emma, two paddling friends from Gunnison, to explore more of Park Creek's potential.
This time, we drove further up the creek, and found ourselves a nice short canyon that looked mostly good to go from the road. After a quick recon flight with the drone to suss out a couple of log issues, we got to work and paddled down through it. The result was a fun canyon up to class III, with a couple of fairly easy log portages, in a pretty and shallow canyon of welded tuff.
The South Fork Rio Grande gauge was reading around 600 cfs when we did this, which I'm estimating meant we had around 150 cfs actual in Park Creek.
Paddlers are Tara Allman, Emma Dehaven and Kit Davidson. Thanks for watching!
