I used to be a volunteer firefighter. Trust me when I say that the joy of doing this is bittersweet. You don't want to but you're glad to know that you can. The fire department that I worked with actually ran a hose through a police cruiser one time. So yeah folks, not even the police department is allowed to park in front of a hydrant.

Who cares whether or not the firefighters enjoyed busting up the BMW so they could do their job, saving lives and property. If I was the spokesmen for the fire department, I would have said so too. "You know what? It tics off my guys every time they see a car parked in front of a hydrant. So when they need to use a hydrant, they just may enjoy busting it up. Don't like it? As a firefighter I have done this once under the guidance of the state police who the issued tickets to the individual for parking in front of the hydrant, expired inspection, and expired registration. It was then towed to the impound lot as the owner was watching.

It does not matter, KLD. If your car is parked by a fire-hydrant during a fire, then you deserve what happens to it. Cars parked next to fire-hydrants can prevent firefighters from connecting their hoses to them, which prevents them from shooting water at the fire in order to stop it from creating casualties and damage. So yeah, your car deserves what happens to it if it is parked next to a fire-hydrant. Firefighters should not and do not have to pay for your wrong doing.

If you park in front of a hydrant and the firefighters have to smash your windows to get the hose connected, you as the one who parked it there is liable for the damage. The fire department is not reponsible for your own negligence.

The thing is it is not the government's money. It is from every citizen who pays taxes and obeys the laws. You do not own the road or the area from the road to the edge of the sidewalk nearest your property. The city lets you park their out of courtesy.

The fine for parking next to a hydrant is a sum of money ($ 115 in NY according to Google). That should be the end of it. It's not up to the fire fighter or cop to decide my fine should be higher than yours, so yeah, while I feel that while there (of course) should be no legal repercussions for the firefighters for damaging the car when they have to, there should also be no arbitrary extra "fine" (possibly thousands of dollars) given to someone who did the exact same as some other person. The hassle of getting your car repaired and possibly have to miss it for some time (and still finding glass all over three years later) is extra punishment enough. The law states parking there will cost you $ 115, so it should only cost you $115, not $ 1328,43 + $ 115... Parking next to a hydrant is bad and should be punished, don't get me wrong. I just feel it's unfair to fine some people more than others based on outside influences that have nothing to do with the infraction (the person who parked the car is most likely not the one who started the fire. Furthermore, arson has it's own punishments). Just increase the fine by $ 5 and pay for the damages...

During the minute it took for the firefighters to break the windows and move the illegally parked car in front of the hydrant, the fire multiplied itself a thousand or more times. Seconds really do count in an emergency and people who illegally park in front of hydrants, block fire zones and obstruct EMS vehicles should be held fully liable for the extra damage and lives lost due to the delays caused by the illegal parking.

I did it 35yrs. Ago to a Cadillac when I was on my local volunteer FD. I was afraid I'd get into trouble but it was a small town and the Mayor was there! He just laughed and said the driver had it coming! He also told the PD officers to issue a ticket which they did. To make thing's worse for the owner our hose. Had a leak!

I like it when this happens. but, one thing I wish that will happen. is, When cop gives owner a ticket. should also state that car had to be damaged due to blocking Hydrant. Then it gets sent to Insurance Company. Where insurance Companies, in turn take a stand agiasnt people blocking Hydrant and NOT pay Claim or Repairs. here in the UK I know a firefighter who was called to the a road crash, it involved a drink driver, it was only a low speed crash and the car wasn't badly damaged and doors opeed fine, the car was virtually new but as a final lesson before he was taken away in cuffs they cut the roof off the car!..I howled with laughter!
