I had lived in one of the buildings on the Fernald School grounds from 2006-2008. It was one of three buildings open, and used as a family shelter. I was aware of the past there, and also read "the state boys rebellion ", a memoir that two of the original residents had written. Thank you for sharing this video. It's heartbreaking to know all that went on there for so long. There was most certainly a painful vibe in the building I lived in. Tarbell hall, I believe was the name. God bless those who survived that horrible time.

I was a human services temp. worker, and I worked 1 shift at Tarbell hall in the late '80's. It was creepy. I also worked a fe wshifts at Medfield, and Wrentham,,,such beautiful buildings. They should be fixed up, and be used for a college campus or something. Medfield state hospital closed it's doors in 1994. The buildings are beautiful. The grounds are open to the public, but buildings are all boarded up. They filmed a movie there in 2010 starring Leonardo DiCaprio called Shutter Island.

It’s common misconception that the first building was built in 1848 and I can understand the confusion however the campus moved to the location you’re currently at in 1887 and the first building that was built there was built in 1890 however, it was renovated so that makes the oldest building they’re unrenovated built in 1891 and that’s what that very building is the one that you guys explored in this video, it’s the one where you guys said there was that weird little middle section where you’re kind of in between two different wings. it was the original administration building and staff housing because some of the people that worked there lived there so they had to build a building that served two different purposes at the time. later in 1933, They built a brand new administration building which is the building with columns, however the other building stayed open up until around 1982 so it’s been a Bandan for around 40 years! It was also one of the first ones to be abandoned when they first started abandoning buildings they secured them, so what they do is they basically lock all the doors windows and then put up a fence around it.

Visited the school in the 1970's with my high school psychology class. As I recall, there was a movement at the time to "mainstream" many of these folks who were institutionalized for all the wrong reasons.

Parker this is a very interesting video, all of you'se did a great job. But I must say I started to cry when the 2 former residents shared their horrific memories as a child living there :'( I pray they found happiness in their life. I hope Karma on those that were abusive. Thank you for sharing though, it's a story to not forget.

Hey Parker! I actually live in Waltham where the school resides. I have gone into alot of research about the school and it actually closed in 2014. By then it was only ran out of one building on the far edge of campus and there were less then 20 people all over the age of 60. (It was also ran alot beter in regard to the residents.

In B.C. Canada the mental institutions were closed around the 70s because government didn't want to spend the money on them anymore. It's really sad because allot of those people now live on the streets and are in and out of jails because there's no place to house them. I doubt they will ever open them again and the buildings have been used in movies and haunted events, that seems really sad to me they can make money off the mentally ill.

I visited this place one day in 1995. My teacher's brother lived there. They were doing sort of a "carnival" day for the residents and staff and my teacher asked us if we wanted to come along and help out. It was cool because we got to get out of class and basically hang out and grill burgers and hot dogs all day. It's strange to think that it was barely 22 years ago and now the place looks like it's been abandoned for 50-60 years.

The first building you entered is the Chipman Building, built in 1892. The steel frame is a retrofit. That building was closed around the 70s, in which it became a storage building for unneeded equipment. It was originally a dormitory. The kitchen you found is for serving, there is a central Food Service building that would do all the prep then bring the food to the dorms. The second building is Stephan Bowen Hall, built as a hospital in 1907 it was later expanded then replaced. It's last use was as a therapy building and possibly as a nursery, after closing in the 70s it was used to store excess equipment. The third building is the Storehouse, it was built in 1891 as a boiler house to heat the eastern group of buildings. The fourth building is Waverley Hall, it was built in 1891 as the administration building. It was expanded till it was replaced by the new administration building in 1933, it got repurposed into staff housing and closed in the 1970s. Everything in it was stored there after it closed.
@Train115

Forgot to note, but the Storehouse, as the name suggests, became a storage building when the new (1920s) powerplant was built.

There are underground tunnels that connect all the buildings. The tunnels carried steam pipes, electric conduit, was used to transfer food from the kitchen to some of the buildings. There was a morgue on the property. It was a city unto itself.

hey Parker,,,Great video, it's interesting what your grandfather was saying towards the end of the video , that same thing happened to a mental institution here in my area, "Hudson Valley Psychiatric Center " back in the late 90's-early 2000's, it was built back in the late 1890's the place for the longest time was and still is closed down,quickly decaying,, however it was recently bought and the folks who bought it are going to take down some of the older buildings that are too far gone to do anything with, but keep the main administrative building and rehabilitate it and use it for Business and residential use,, it sits on property very similar to what you showed here

We did this till the late 80s. Millions of slaves, killed, tortured, sexual torture. And most of these places ran by the states and now covered up. I worked for a state, going to these places, getting the old paper records, and bring them to the state incinerator for destruction I started reading the files, and I could not believe what I was reading. I was very young, one of my first jobs, and I thought it was a good job. Now, I have panic attacks and nightmares about this the largest facility that contained over a hundred buildings with underground steam tunnels that how's millions of children over its hundred year history, it is now a state park, but no one is allowed to go to this park that encompasses over a hundred square miles there are closed circuit cameras that are linked directly to police dispatch and if you turn up the main road to go to this state park the police are dispatched immediately and they move you along within 5 minutes of arriving there are huge signs in the parking lot of this state park that tell you you're not allowed off of the asphalt parking lot you're not allowed on the grass and you're definitely not allowed in any of the buildings or on any of the roads on this enormous campus it was one of the sites that I spent the most time at collecting the records for destruction It was exclusively for housing children and could House close to a hundred thousand at one time anytime I hear that were better than other countries that torture and murder I know firsthand that we are not And this was not that long ago and it is still hidden to this day The entire town worked at this facility everyone's parents grandparents they all worked at this facility Any of the businesses in town were supported by the facility Be vocal bowling alley and movie theater and diners we're all in business because of the employees of this facility The Freddy Krueger character was based on actual people that worked in the boiler House at this facility Most of the bodies were incinerated the number of children killed in this place must have totaled in the millions More children were brought in every day I cry every time I think about it The human race is mostly made up of monsters Very few good people in the world
