@@DracolegacyOfficial Dayton Audio uses a three-layer Nomex honeycomb and glass fiber sandwich cone in the Ultimax subs. Not a cosmetic-only dust cap. A small, very dense paper cone is used to transmit force from the voice coil to the dish cone. The Max-X have a paper cone with a cosmetic dish dust cap. It's also beneficial for making the whole cone assembly more rigid.

What’s great about Dayton Audio is that they’re also known for their amazing sq. So for this sub to take THAT much power and put up those kinds of numbers? You got yourself a nice low budget daily sq setup which is saying a lot considering how much money is put into those high quality sq systems.

Love my Dayton subs. I have a 15" Titanic (old version of the Ultimax 15) in my home for audio and home theater. It's driven by a Parts Express 1000w watt plate Amp (640 w continuous) in a sealed box I built. It's been in use for 12-15 years. Great sound quality and takes all the abuse I throw at it. I also run one of their 12" sound quality subs in my truck driven by a 500w Alpine mono Amp. It's around 3 years old. Both offer great sound quality but still hit nice, tight, and hard. They aren't SPL monsters, don't look sexy, but have great sound quality, are very reliable, and represent a fantastic value. These are exactly the kind of subs you want if you want the best for your money and care about sound quality, not just one note wonder SPL subs.

RMS is often thermal, so the sub is 'rated' to handle 600w of constant power from a thermal perspective. What you're testing is more along the lines of 'program' power, which is a quick burst of power for usually 1/2 second or so. Program power is quite a bit higher than RMS power simply because you don't have enough time to build up any heat in the motor structure. That said, Dayton does make some very good stuff for the money and I'm always impressed with their drivers!

The mx15 should also be a banger. The only potential issue I see is the stamped steel basket handling the heavier cone/diaphragm when fed higher than rated power. I’ve seen other stamped steel frames/baskets crack and split when over powered (Soundqubed 3.115 on more than 2k power). Huge motors combined with a large diameter cone (15”/18”) on a stamped steel basket is a recipe for potential damage. I would love to see a test of the mx15 and also any of the UM ultimax series subs. Also, soundqubes 8” (hds208?) with the cast frame is supposed to be a little monster, especially when running multiple with double the rated power. Keep the test’s/comparo’s coming!
@greenbassboosts88723 жыл бұрын
Your car is made out of stamped metal, probably steel. It can be made quite strong for different appications
@Russell_and_Rosko3 жыл бұрын
@@greenbassboosts8872 You must not be a car guy. Unibodies flex under load…quite substantially. Torsional rigidity is a measurement done on performance car chassis because of the twisting that happens while cornering, hitting a bump etc. Repeatedly fatigued stamped steel peels/splits. There’s a reason why high end drivers are made with cast baskets. No offense. I understand stamped steel baskets are prevalent, but they have issues when used with a lot of power at low frequencies supporting a heavy diaphragm, especially if clipped or outputting heavy distortion.
@Russell_and_Rosko3 жыл бұрын
@@greenbassboosts8872 I had to follow up and say that the flex in the basket has to be taken into account to prevent voice coil rubbing ie the gap in the voice coil has to be increased on stamped steel drivers but when designing a speaker with a cast basket the tolerances can be made tighter which increases the BL measurement (motor strength)
@greenbassboosts88723 жыл бұрын
@@Russell_and_Rosko If the basket has issues then it is a poorly designed and inadequate basket whether it is steel or aluminum. I was trying to get the point across that steel baskets are not all alike. The basket on this Dayton driver is likely made of thicker steel and much more rigid than my $20 GRS drivers rated at 120 Watts, and the Dayton just took 7k Watts without breaking or anything becoming noticeably damaged. I think there's an effect on the opinions of steel baskets because they end up on cheap drivers often. I think they can be just as good as the aluminum ones. I am a car guy, so I see your point about rigidity as generally true but possibly not applicable. Subwoofers experience basically no torsional force, and car bodies made of aluminum still flex. For the shape of a subwoofer basket, steel is a good material as long as it is designed well and appropriate thickness. I wouldn't worry about a basket just because it is steel. I have quite a few drivers all of which are steel baskets except one which is actually plastic. I've noted zero problems with the baskets on any of them, and it seems this Dayton driver is doing just fine with it's steel basket. If it works, and it's less expensive, why should I find issues with that? Almost always when I see a basket break it is the fault of the box baffle flexing or the driver was dropped. Otherwise, seems baskets very rarely break.

athats not a one piece dust cap, it just has no cap. Its solid cone
@chrisperez75923 жыл бұрын
What you see on the front of the Max-X drivers is actually one large dust cap that completely fills the cone. Underneath that dust cap is a standard cone. It gives them the one piece dish cone look, but they are much easier to manufacture and the gap can be tighter. Centering the coil is done with standard shims so the gap can be tighter then using a one piece dish (with that type of diaphragm keeping the coil centered in the gap is very difficult since there is no way to shim the coil during assembly, so you need a larger gap or you have deal with a larger number of rejects... Well, shims are possible, but you need a huge pole vent... TC Sounds used to do it). Plus the large dust cap adds a lot of reinforcement to the cone, it is essentially a sandwich cone because there is so much contact surface area on the outside edge.

It would be hard to find a better sub at that price . I bought 2 of these for subs in my home system putting a Crown 1500 rms amp on them . This is for SQ . Think I'm going to run them sealed in about 2 cf with a lot of polyfill . The amp will be crossed at 100 to 110. The other speakers are all Dayton RS a 10 two 6.5 and ribbon tweets . All speakers will be in their own enclosure's . I have 2 sets of Dayton 3 way crossovers I will try both to see what sounds best . All I need now is the inspiration to get out there and build all those boxes lol .
