I think the problem with a black suit is that it is so formal feeling. People used to have more formal clothing like a tuxedo, but the black suit has filled that role for most so it feels odd to wear it outside of formal events and funerals. Really cool to see the less formal ways to wear that suit! I love the idea of a polo or sweater, those open alot of possibilities for other suits as well. Great video as usual!

Do you think you could go through the different dress codes? Black tie, business formal, casual, semi formal etc. It can be a tad confusing knowing what qualifies and what doesn’t. Love your videos; they’re always great help (even as a woman)

White tie: white linen bow tie, black tailcoat and black dress pants with two decorative silk stripes at the side (2 for white tie and one for black tie), white tie waistcoat (a special waistcoat only for white tie and early vintage inspired black tie), patent leather oxford or opera pump, white dress shirt, that only takes shirt studs, with a stiff detachable wing collar, stiff single shirt cuffs for cufflinks, a stiff shirt front. A top hat is optional. Black tie: black silk bowtie, silk faced lapels on a black suit ( either single or double breasted with peak lapels or a shawl collar) if it's a two piece suit, you'll need a cumberbund ( a three piece suit would already have a waist covering), black oxfords or opera pumps in patent leather or properly shined leather. You could also swap the jacket for a dinner jacket( jacket in a contrasting color with a peak lapel or shawl collar, which can be self faced or faced in silk) or a smocking jacket ( a jacket with a shawl collar, closed with buttons, a toggle closure or a sash). You could wear velvet slippers with a smoking jacket. You shirt is white with a french cuff. It can't have visible buttons(closed with shirt studs or with a hidden fly) and it often has a decorative insert at the chest. Morning coat: a charcoal or black morning coat, a contrasting waistcoat, grey striped dress pants, regular white dress shirt with french cuffs, either a wedding tie, a formal ascot or a bow tie, black oxfords/balmoral boots/button boots. Stroller suit (Stresemann): regular charcoal jacket with a peak lapel, a grey wedding tie and an optional homburg hat. Otherwise it is identical to a morning coat ensemble. Black tie optional: the host would be happy to see you wearing black tie, but is okay with you just wearing a charcoal business suit, a white dress shirt, black oxfords and a formal neck tie( no flashy tie) Business formal: a dark suit (black, charcoal or navy) in a formal style (notch or peak lapel, single or double breasted and 2 or 3 piece), a white dress shirt, black oxfords( can have a cap toe, but is otherwise plain) and a tie ( blue or red are good options). Business casual: this depends on the enviroment, but the most formal interpretation would be a navy blazer with khakis, a white dress shirt and leather dress shoes( avoid oxfords and try derbys or monkstraps, niw you can also have a little bit of broguing) in brown( you can have black, but dark brown is more fitting ). Your tie can be the same as business formal. A less formal, but still classy interpretation would be a tweed sport coat (single breasted with notch lapels) combination. You pants can be khakis, chinos, corduroys or dark jeans. Skip the white dress shirt on this one. A light blue ocbd would the most classic, but and off white dress shirt is more refined. You can skip the neckwear here, but if you want to you can wear woolen neck or bowties in muted colors. Waistcoats aren't required, but can give you extra warmth if you want that. For this outfit your clothes shouldn't be shiny and should have some texture. Now you can also wear full brogue brown wigtip derbys to match the textured look. A cleaner quite casual look would be to wear an ocbd, khakis, brown monkstraps and no neckwear. Some companies might have different standarts, but you can't really go wrong with any of these options. Semi formal: a dumb term, that means nothing. Everyone has a different interpetation of it, but in my opinion the second business casual outfit is a good idea if you don't know any details. The Gentlemans Gazette has videos, which can be helpfull on this topic. Casual: Everyday clothing ( I wouldn't wear sweatpants and stained hoodies tho ) Wearing jeans, a t shirt, clean sneakers or boots and a jacket are a good starting point.

The black suit is often criticized for its supposed lack of versatility, but I think you have presented a clear challenge to that here. I think a black suit, which is traditionally considered both formal and niched, requires more sartorial confidence to pull off well than navy or charcoal, especially when you attempt to dress it down, and perhaps that’s part of why it gets a bad rap. It also has a lot of connotations associated with it, thanks to both history and media. It’s true that the black suit has a built-in starkness due to its high contrast, especially when paired with the traditional white dress shirt, so men with certain combinations of hair and skin tone will find it flatters them less, but a black suit is slimming, a black suit is sophisticated, and a black suit lends a man a certain gravity that has real value when making a statement with an ensemble. I have brown skin and salt-and-pepper hair, so the black suit works well for me (even with a white shirt), and I consider it a wardrobe essential-so much so that I have TWO of them (worsted and cavalry twill)! Dark navy suit is much more versatile. Black is a bit too stark for most occasions outside a funeral. Black tuxedo is the only black “suit” I own and even then I think midnight blue looks nicer.

I can see why navy and grey are the go-to’s (which also easily break up as separates), and then throw in a brown or even green option which still have more versatility. Agree it’s a 🔥 option to have in the wardrobe tho
