Parking garage collapse in Lower Manhattan leaves residents and drivers displaced

The demolition of the parking garage at 57 Ann Street is going slowly as officials are concerned about the stability of surrounding buildings. As engineers evaluate their options, residents, drivers and students are left with no access to their homes and cars.

Force the company that owns the collapsed parking to provide rentals for people whose cars are stuck over there and force them to make car payments . Problem solved.

this could be so scary , If the outer lying buildings were built with the thought of LEANING or horizontal pressure that is being removed , the side structures could bulge out where the pressure or support is off I am glad my vehicle is not sitting in or near the locked down zone . Let’s think for a minute, every building structure is supposed to go through a rigorous annual building inspection. We are talking about 66 years worth of building inspections since this structure was converted into a garage. True, there are more heavier SUV cars now weighing 4-6 tons each. I have to imagine that building inspectors had to have warned the garage owner about needing possible structural upgrades to withstand heavier weights for at least the past 25 years!!! 🤔

So this is perceived that if your car is in the parking garage then you more than likely are not going to see it, it will or as been crushed by the parking garage. By the looks of it some are savable like the dudes from the beginning, why could or someone sign a waiver to retrieve theses cars? I would not be calling my own insurance company to file a claim and make my insurance raise my payments because of using a parking garage that collapsed over certain circumstances. Sounds like a lawsuit is being established to pay out the losses.

This event should cause a major review of New York's building inspection standards -- that garage obviously should have been torn down decades ago. It's probably a hundred years old!

The company or companies are all a bunch of criminals charging high rates just to profit from hard working ppl , instead of using the proceeds for safety and infrastructure.. I was charged $72 for two hrs in one of those crappy garages.. Unbelievable! 😤

Nobody is responsible. It's the way NYC operates.

Since it was built in 1925 they are probably all dead. It was built as offices or light industrial, never intended to carry such weight. Converted to a garage in 1957.
