i remember reading somewhere something that some person said about it in relation to the ride that i think is very true: the major driving force of the movie’s plot is to lift the curse and free all of the ghosts so they can “move on”, but that’s not the point of the attraction at all-the ride was envisioned as a “retirement home” for ghosts, and they’re even referred to as “happy haunts”, they’re only there because they want to be. i’d really like to see it done that way, should we ever get a remake
@SirBlackReeds6 жыл бұрын
That wouldn't work for a feature film though.
@lyricperson246 жыл бұрын
how so? just because movies featuring ghosts are usually focused on helping them "move on" doesn't mean it couldn't be done. there was a graphic novel disney released with marvel about the haunted mansion where the story was that the ghosts were cursed to stay within the mansion while a sea captain's ghost searched for some kind of treasure (a nod to the original story for the ride), and when the curse was lifted it wasn't that the ghosts immediately moved on, they literally just went back on with haunting the place but they could roam the grounds freely and do whatever they wanted. i just want to see those 999 happy haunts having some fun!
@SirBlackReeds6 жыл бұрын
+lyricperson24 It's a retirement home for ghosts. There's not really much to build upon for a narrative. The ride itself doesn't even feature much in the way of a narrative. That graphic novel you mentioned doesn't aid your argument as you clearly stated that it's not about the retirement home for ghosts concept.
@lyricperson246 жыл бұрын
i never said it wasn't? it's still an old haunted house filled with ghosts who have no interest in moving on, they just want to scare people and hang out, which is exactly what is going on in the ride, therefore it IS a retirement home for ghosts. all i'm saying is that the threat facing the spirits shouldn't be keeping them from "moving on" since that directly contradicts the idea that they are there of their own free will. would that be difficult to write? absolutely! would it be easy for it to become too complicated or silly? sure! but definitely doable.
@walrus86366 жыл бұрын
lyricperson24 this would be great if they took that storyline path, it could still be an emotional ending with them finally being free but instead of moving on and all that, they are finally able to be happy and roam and be free 🤷♂️ I see what you mean

Then he was like “your sweater” And then it clicked. Because this poor guy had never been to Disney and only knew about the movie. So I had to explain that it’s from a ride, and that I’m not such a die hard Eddie Murphy fan that I’d buy merch for one of his worst films. Now whenever I want to embarrass him, I always say “are you a big Eddie Murphy fan?”

Although I was ecstatic about seeing Jim Hill mentioned in one of your videos, I was ready to pounce on what I perceived as an error. I thought that he wasn't the screenwriter for the original film. I was ready to post a comment pointing out that he hadn't written this screenplay but something in the back of my mind was telling me not to - like some half remembered comment he made about writing that held me back. I reached out to the man himself and he did indeed write this: "I wrote that thing a whole 'nother lifetime ago." As he always does when he starts discussing Disney, he also provided an additional anecdote: "Here's a fun fact for you: Keystone [Entertainment (i.e., the outside production company who made that first round of "Air Bud" movies for Walt Disney Studios back in the 1990s)] wanted to approach Bette Midler and see if she'd be willing to play Madam Leota. I never heard whether they actually managed to get her (or her reps) our "Mansion" script to read." So there's a small, tenuous connection to Hocus Pocus for ya!

They even got Roman Dirge, authot of "Lenore: The Cute Little Dead Girl," to contribute a story using his ability balancing horror and "friendliness" towards the audience as well as his amazing cover art of the Bride. Many different artists and authors gave stories and artwork with varying inspiration vs ridereliant content that captured creepiness and humour while keeping true to the ride's tone. With so many creators able to deliver on the Haunted Mansion Theme, it proved that there were plenty of people out there able and just dying to pull off the story and performance of a lifetime

To be honest, I think the serious moments with the backstory of Master Gracey and Emily work really well and the whole "Death to us part" moments the movie has. As mentioned, it's really the whole Eddie Murphy thing that kills it. Eddie Murphy is a amazing comedian, there is no denying that, but for a movie that focuses on death, betrayal and trying to find utter happiness, his addition just makes the movie worse. I think the movie would have stood out if it focused more on Master Gracey and his plan to try and marry his reincarnated wife while still tying in some bits of the ride. Focusing attention on a few key scenes: The Ballroom and largely the attic scene. Focus on the engaged wife's backstory and play into who she died and then how it affected Gracey along with the backstory of him being framed/killed by the butler. Then go into how Gracey is confused seeing his wife somehow alive and not remembering him and play into that how he wants her to remember and be together along with a "you'll die in death and be with me forever in death" sort of thing. I guess similar to Corpse's Bride. Then I would bring in the family finding all the evidence to how it was framed and finding say something that could free Master Gracey and move on into the afterlife or tie something in where Emily meets up with Master Gracey and both go into the afterlife. In a sense, making it more heavily focused on the attention to Master Gracey and only throwing in the "saving the family" bits when somewhat needed to help either raise tension or push the climax.

@MissFlow6 жыл бұрын
The movie is not bad, I've seen far worse and it's no Dragonball: Evolution level insulting to it's source material. There were things I loved about the movie, it's production design is gorgeous and they really translated the feel and magic of the ride to the screen qua mood and admosphere. But that's where the plusses end I'm afraid. Instead of actually merging things from the ride into the plot naturally they just use them as quick cameo's most of the time. The graveyard scene went by quickly and only a few of those ghosts even get a line or interact with the main cast. The singing bust are a big joke and they made up a story instead of using plot lines from the ride. Oke, HM the ride is not that story heavy, there are some plotlines along the way but I always felt like the ride wanted to give an experience, not a story! The closest it comes to a plot, which is even more a premise than a plot, is that the HM is a house where all kind of ghosts spend their time until they can move on to the afterlife. This explains the various nationalities in the graveyard. How did this house become a ghost sanctuary? I don't know. It's not relevant to the ride. The ride is more character rich than plot rich, I mean a lot of the animatronics do have names. HM is the right balance between silly and scary. Of course, I'm talking about the original HM ride in California and the one in WDW in Florida. Because next in line we have Phantom Manor, the European version. And that ladies and gentelman.....is different territorium. While the HMs in California and Florida are pretty much similair to eachother, PM is a special snowflake. It's múch darker, intense, dramatic and story heavy. PM is the right amount of staying true to the HM, in order to be familiair, yet it manages to be it's complete own thing! The story of PM is incredibly rich and ties in even other attractions in the area like Thunder Mountain. Yes, PM and TM share a story! It surprises me how little people know this, it adds so much to the experience. PM stitches it's scenes much more together, because PM has a main character: that be the bride. She appears in a lot of scenes throughout the ride, even in different forms (on portraits, young woman, old woman, corpse, ghost, etc). HM has a narrator through parts of the ride but the Ghost Host explains more about the house and it's inhabitants and their state of being. PM only has a narrator in the foyer, stretching room and waiting area. The ride itself just shows you the story with the scenes, which indicates a lineair narrative. PM even found a way to tie in HM scenes into the story. The endless hallway shows our main character's current state. The ballroom scene in PM is a wedding, rather than just a party and leads to the next scene: the bride's boudoir. This is the attic scene in HM. Of course PM didn't adopt all scenes of HM and merged a few unique ones inthere, like the casket tunnel + skeleton lounge and Thunder Mesa as replacement for the graveyard scene. People complained about that but folks...really.....? To explain this I dive a bit into PM's lore: In Disneyland Paris, Thunder Mountain was the mine where gold was found by a powerfull man Henry Ravenswood. With the gold, he build a majestic manor next to TM, being Ravenswood Manor (aka Phantom Manor in it's glory days). Henry had a daughter, Melanie, who felt in love with one of the mine workers and made plans to leave the manor after their wedding. This, surprise surprise is our bride! Then this earthquake happened. According to folklore, robbing the Thunder Mountain from it's gold angried the gods and thus the mine collapsed, along with the town near by: Thunder Mesa. Henry and his wife didn't survive the catastrophy, as they were present in the mine that time. Menalie and her fiance did were left behind and thus they made plans to marry and leave the manor for good. But Henry, in the afterlife, didn't like the idea of his daughter leaving. He lured her fiancé to the attic and hanged him. This is what you see happening in the strething room, thus another HM scene now tied into the lore! Melanie, in her dress and ready to go, waited for him. But as the hours went by guests started to leave until only she and the house staff were left. Melanie died from a broken heart and never left the house after that. In hope she would find her groom, she never put off her dress and searched endlessly through the house, only with a candelabra to see in the dark. People.....this is practically GIfTWRAPPED movie material!!!! Why on earth didn't they go with THIS incredible story! I've only told you the basics, there is even much more to this. This, compined with that fantastic music, just screams and begs to be moviefied!

Ironically, I myself never did watch Pirates of the Caribbean like I do to Haunted Mansion. Even though, I am more familiar with the title of POTC. But I more likely to rewatch the Haunted Mansion than POTC. I think it’s a very good movie aside from Edie himself 😆 I mean I could connect to every bit of this movie. It’s a very charming, romantic movie indeed with too many jokes along the side lol. This is the movie that I could cry for. It’s uplifting and cliche, well like any movies, but I’m extremely certain that if you open your mind and make yourself a favor of watching this on your couch at home, you’ll inevitably fall in love with this film 🕸🕷💍😇

I absolutely love this movie. I still don't understand why people hate it so much. It has the right amount of charm and spooky it's a great fun family friendly Halloween movie.

I really do love the movie for what it is, but I can’t wait to see what Guillermo Del Toro can do with it!

I have nostalgia for the original movie because I saw it as a child but I do admit if it wasnt for that then i probably wouldn't watch it again. However i would love to see them reboot the Haunted Mansion with a new story that is hopefully more faithful to the ride.

honestly i wish they went with the original version of the original movie having Eddie Movie come to the mansion for a promotion bringing his family along only to be trapped and have to overcome obstacles to get out and free the princes by the 13th hour or be trapped with the rest of the ghosts for eternity.

I know it isn't the best movie, but I loved it growing up. I have watched it over and over, and it does tend to make me laugh at least a little.

Imagine how great this would be if it had been a dark comedy along the veins of Beetlejuice, but with the beautiful scenery and direction of a Guillermo del Toro film. I hope he really is going to make a Haunted Mansion movie! Tim Burton could probably do a pretty good job as well

I loved this and the country bear jamboree movie, and then pirates of the Caribbean got so huge the ride themed movies died off

Underrated movie I actually enjoyed it more than the pirates movies

The problem with the Haunted Mansion movie is the same problem with Titanic. It is a good story trapped inside a subpar story. Also, there is little to connect the movie to the ride. Master Gracey is in the attraction (although you have to look for him), but Elizabeth is not. She could have been put in the endless hallway or the ballroom scene. Maybe her and Gracey dancing among the guests.

I think a follow up to this video would be interesting now that the Haunted Mansion (2023) has been released

I don’t know if I’m making this up or if it was real but I seem to remember something about a ladder being used in advertisements for this movie. I think I remember Eddie Murphy falling off of it in slow motion. I also remember a music video on Disney channel.

I’ve actually thought that the ride was based on the movie as when I first rode the Haunted Mansion, it was the Nightmare Before Christmas layover. I was aware of the movie first and then the ride.

I wonder if we'll ever see Del Toro's vision of a Haunted Mansion movie.

What this movie got right : The music, the mansion, the opening flashback scene, the overall story with elizabeth dying during the ballroom party was done very well, generally the entire origin with the butler killing Elizabeth, all that was a pretty good concept but everything else was just a little bit dumbed down. The first half of the movie is actually not bad! as a huge fan of the ride i think the opening sequence is the strongest part. But there is definitely so much missed opportunity and characters that should have had a much more important part in the story like the hitchhiking ghosts, also madame leota was handled terribly although Jen Tilly was a decent casting choice. It should have been handled the way Pirates O.T.C. was done. A much more mature approach with comedy YES but also serious and dark where it needed to be. Let's hope Del toro actually gets to do his version that he's been working on for 10 years now!! i'm sure he could give us the movie we've been waiting to see.

Just gonna say when I saw this as a kid I absolutely loved it. Of course at the time I'd never been to Disney Land and had never heard of the ride considering the internet was still slightly obscure in my town. For a kids movie I thought this was a good movie but whatever, I probably wouldn't watch it now as an adult in my 20s.

Interesting info for the making of the history of the movie, I thought it was ok an could work for a Halloween line up during the month of October. Some resin could see Lego using some of the details for Disney's Haunted Mansion into a Lego set, option of having things from the ride an the movie maybe mixed into the set. Seen a number of Disney Lego set's out in store's, seeing one done for the Haunted Mansion an for October for Halloween as a spooky location set for a fun idea theme.

I think ti would be amazing to get a ride someday with the Movie Mansions exterior with the bayou, and have a spare of the exterior queue an expansive graveyard like in the movie achieved with a practical effect. The have some of the interiors kept from the movie for the ride, but dont incorporate any characters from the movie. Hate it or love it, the movie had amazing sets and architectural design.

I saw this in theaters with my brother when we were six , it was this or elf. He wanted to see elf but I insisted haunted mansion because I wanted to be brave despite being scared. I HATED it , scared me and if I remember correctly we left early because I cried. Hard to believe but I'll always remember that day , my brother was so upset. But when we did see elf when it went to dvd we loved it and still do. I ended up watching this movie pretty commonly a few years after the fact and now I look back fondly on the whole thing. I thought it was really good especially the romance plot but definitely disliked the jokes the most strangely enough. Sorry for gushing but this is the only case I could ever share that story semi-understandably Thanks for the video and bringing back memories.

I don't care what people say. I am a die hard Disney fan and love this movie. I also love the ride. I am a little disappointed how Haunted Mansion and Pirates of The Caribbean do not have an obviously set story line, but I can appreciate the ride and movie as almost separate story's. I feel the same with Pirates of The Caribbean.

I remember being disappointed seeing this as a kid in theaters, they definitely didn't do justice to the ride and Eddie Murphy was horribly miscast. Would've loved to see how it could've been had it been made in the 90's but I think the era we are currently in is a perfect time for a remake, hopefully we'll be getting one soon!

I actually really loved this movie. I liked the certain set pieces and the tone of comedy and horror. Maybe it’s just my nostalgia but I felt like I connected the Haunted Mansion movie to the ride but then Pirates seemed far from the Attraction.

This movie is fine. Other than the ballroom scene everything happens in the right order
