I love arboretums. I am putting this on my list when I visit Oregon.

Title of the video reminded me of Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell. I love arboretums and botanical gardens. This one is lovely.

Is the concept of The Commons the same as or similar to that of The Third Place? It seems like it would be, but I'm wondering if there are any philosophical distinctions.

That is a really good question and I see them used interchangeably, but I don’t know if there is a distinct difference I am not aware of, and so I want to read some more on that.

In my understanding the distinction comes down to what you're focusing on. When I talk about the commons it's a place a collective is all responsible for. The Third Place is somewhere people go to for community. They could be the same place, like a public park, but not always. The local McDonalds is a place I go to for community on weekend mornings, thus would a third place, but none of us would think of it was the commons.

@reyndor1583 Thank you! I was not very familiar with The Commons, and your explanation makes perfect sense!

Yes that’s my understanding as well: The Commons are Third Places funded by the public and owned collectively as a society. I hadn’t really thought about private businesses being a third place but that does make sense as someone who spent a lot of time in coffee shops with friends in the 90s.

0:22 fyi, not all arboretums are free. It is clear that you are talking about one arboretum, in Portland, but then you referred to arboretums as being free and funded by tax dollars. Portland has had some bad press the past several years, but it still seems like an overall better place than a lot of places? My big city sometimes gets compared to Portland, but there are lots of things I imagine are "cooler" about Portland, that free arboretum being one of them. It would be nice if all arboretums were free and funded by our tax dollars.
