We have a big ash tree here in east Tennessee. I'm trying to identify it and I believe it's a green. We found out through a tree cutter. He was at the neighbor's and my husband hates where the ash is so he asked him for a removal estimate. The guy started begging my husband not to cut it down--he even offered to prune it this fall very cheaply if he wouldn't cut it down. My late in-laws planted it around 1990 and when they passed my husband inherited the property. I never gave much thought to what kind of tree it is, but I love it and didn't want it removed at all. My husband I discussed it many times. Now, because it's an ash it gets to stay for sure.

This is absolutely fascinating! While living in St. Louis in the mid-90's, I planted two Purple Autumn Ash trees. Eventually, both were taken by EAB. I wanted to cry. Kim's vast info gives me hope for the future of ash trees in the US.

One of so many doing NCSU proud. I could listen to her go on and on. I wish I had known about horticulture as a profession (and passion) when I was younger. Thx to J&S for these, and to the Morton Arboretum and also the Chicano Botanic Garden the other day! I live in NC, but grew up near Madison, WI. I remember those elms dying in the 70s as a kid.

I am from Illinois. I remember as a kid I answered a call from a radio station. They said They were doing a contest. If I answered a question correctly I would win a prize. The question was, what companies jingle is “when it rains it pours?” I actually knew the answer. Morton salt. I have driven by the factory a couple times and saw the little girl with the umbrella on the building.

That's great news about the green ash! My forested lot has been devastated by EAB and just this year we lost an elm out of nowhere - it just up and died. 😥 I have a small forest of seedling trees to plant out but keeping them safe from the heavy deer pressure until they're big enough is a problem!

North Dakota State University has a DED resistant cultivar. A stand of elm were found near the river south of Fargo that were untouched by DED so they have bread them further and I believe they are now in the trade.

Fascinating. We had to take down about six mature green ash trees from our property soon after we moved in (IL/Wi border). And we were gifted a tiny Dutch-elm-disease resistant American Elm about 15 years ago, which has unfortunately just had it's crown die. Trees like these are such a big time commitment, and it's so sad to lose a tree you've watched develop for 15 years.

Here north of Detroit we still have ash trees some mature ones barely hanging on and also plentlyful seedling ash that come up although I never see them get more than 25ft tall before they get knocked back by the EAB but many will continue to sprout back and grow. I've noticed they generally dont touch trees less than about 4 inches in diameter. Ash is still alive just they are functionally extinct as a timber tree.(I've observed ash is the only tree that will come up and make it through a thicket of buckthorn). Also have alot of elm both American and slippery elm, Slippery seem more resistant to the disease. They generally get quite large before the disease takes them and once it starts the tree is dead as a doornail within 3-4 weeks. It crazy it will go from perfectly healthy to dead. They seem to be slowly building natural resistance through.

I’ve got two large Ash trees on my property in Raleigh. An arborist said that one is possibly the largest in Wake county. I’m currently treating them to ward of EAB, and the hope is that there are better protection options in 10-15 yrs.

i am Super interested in the "lingering ash" research, definitely gonna be keeping tabs on that. here in MA after like 10 years of most all dying off, i've actually seen a nice set of green ash trees absolutely thriving and sending off millions of seeds every year

You should contact your local forestry office and let them know where you saw the trees (if they’re not already aware, that is). She said they’re about to initiate a nation wide search for elms in nature that have survived the EAB. How cool to would it be to play a small part in that study!

Fascinating, but also sad that so many tree species have been ravaged by non-native diseases or pests. There was an elm in the yard of a house I rented on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I always thought that was odd because I assumed all the elms died of Dutch elm disease. That tree looked like the one she showed us in this video.

I would very much like to get into touch with someone about the lingering ash program or ash survival program. I live in Oklahoma's red river area and have a huge old beautiful green ash tree in my front yard that I affectionately call, Wise Ash. I have not found e.a.b. damage on my tree though the insects were identified in Oklahoma in 2016.

You could call the Morton arboretum and maybe even your local forestry office. Maybe someone could come out to study your Wise Ash.
