Chicken + Duck Tips for Cold Weather: Dos and Don’ts

Back in 2008, Snowpocalypse had us stuck in deep snow for nearly 3 weeks. It was funny to watch my hens try to fly over the snow to the back porch, maybe 50 ft. These large breed hens are so comical when they do that.

Oof, that was before we had chickens and ducks. I had a baby and two preschoolers and we were stuck in our tiny rental for weeks. We’d eaten everything out of the fridge in preparation to travel to see grandparents in Florida and then flight after flight after flight got cancelled. We were eating whatever we could scrounge in the pantry. My husband had to help multiple stick mail trucks. Do NOT want a winter like that again.

Seriously I am so that overly concerned anxious bird owner. It is around zero in Michigan this week. I have small breeds and do most things right. The Barnyard is well-covered, But I do heat. Silkies and call ducks. Thanks for the info hope I loosen up some.

Hahahaha cold snap🤣🤣🤣. It gets -40 here in my part of Ontario. Lol your chickens do not need winterizing.

I have five bantam chickens, 2 Silkies 2 Turken Frizzles and a Cochin Frizzle. Because of their breed and feather structure I do worry about the cold weather coming ( I am I Corvallis). My husband installed a small oil radiator heater that sits under their roosting area. There is a thin, well ventilated floor between the heater and the roost. Hoping the heat will filter upward just enough to bring the temp out of the 20s but not enough to shock them when they go outside. Wondering if this is just to quell my helicopter mom anxiety.😏
