I made the mistake of breaking down in tears when expressing how horrified I am to my congressional representative, Rob Whittman. His staffer asked if he should send someone to come help me because it sounded like I needed mental health assistance. When I told him I'm scared, not crazy, he said it didn't sound that way to him. He asked again if I needed assistance and I told him no and he said well have a good day. I just don't even have words. Of course it was for the Republican that represents my district. The real real problem is that the conservative base correctly identified the fact that billionaires already controlled everything through our politicians. However, they have obviously been led astray as to the specifics of how that works. They are cool with elon doing this because it's "their guy". They think he is like Robinhood or something. My mother isn't MAGA (no hats/shirts) but she did vote for Trump. We got into it at the beginning when she said she voted for him, long messy story. Anyway, I was explaining to her to that none of these programs he's introducing are going to help her. She's a full time waitress who just entered medicaid. And when I told her 'you're not a part of this, you don't have the money to be a part of this', her answer was to smile at me and go 'then I'll just have to work harder, won't I?' She's a hard worker. She's literally a workaholic, she works 60-70 hours a week. And THAT was her answer, and I had to really think about why that was. I really believe that the older generations (mostly boomers, but some of the older gen X's at this point, too) are entirely projecting themselves onto Tump and Musk. I fully believe they know how fucked they are, but they will not admit it to themselves or other people around them. Because it's also about being correct. It is 100% about 'I made the right choice'. They CANNOT stand being wrong, because they expect even their smallest faults to be weaponized against them (narcissism). It's why none of them ever give a meaningful 'sorry'. I've veered off course. TL;DR: This is a mix of willful head-sand'ing, self-elevation, and the willingness to believe anything that COULD get them 'out of the doghouse' about being wrong. They will not understand. They can comprehend it but they WILL NOT understand it. It is a refusal. DIT: A few people have commented 'I'm a boomer and I didn't [insert here]'. Totally. Not all boomers think this way, and not all Trump voters are boomers. HOWEVER. Out of the boomers and older Gen X's that voted for Trump, I think this is a huge factor of it. You know how all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares? Not all of the older gen voted for the cheeto, but the ones that DID are prone to this mindset. And as far as the younger gens who support Trump, I think it's a different conversation. There's a lot of helplessness and 'doomer' culture in the youth because things are... Bad. Anyway. It's definitely a conversation, but it's a different conversation than what this comment is talking about.

I have been trying to convince my dumb friend to be more aware of what's going on in our country. I urged her to vote Democrats this past election, but she said she wasn't interested in politics whatsoever. This is a single lady of color in her 60s with several illnesses that always need medical attention. She's nowhere rich so she heavily relies on her SS pension and there's nobody to take care of her if she loses whatever little savings she has. I have been worried about her, so I explained what tariffs are and what musk and trump have been up to. I never had any luck convincing her, and she said she wasn't interested in politics and never saw anything bad about trump on TV. All it takes is one question to ask on the internet and one will find countless information about trump and musk. Today, she told me she doesn't like to talk about politics bc it only ends in arguments. I told her this isn't about politics--it's about her SSI pension, medicare and health insurance, her psychological and medical well-being, and compassion for her fellow human beings. She's stayed complacent. Well, today I'm done with her simple mind because there is just no cure for stupid!

I attended a phone town hall meeting with my congressman last night and he also said Musk has "read only" access and was deputized by Trump to have the authority to do this. I don't think people bought into what he said.

I hope not but I think that’s exactly the type of opportunity to bring some gentle but persistent curiosity and force them to explain. Like what does read-only access mean? I’m all for cutting waste but why isn’t Congress the ones reviewing and deciding instead of a small group of bureaucrats? If they aren’t bureaucrats, what are they and what limits are there to their authority? If they have limits to their authority, who’s following up to ensure what you are being told is what’s happening? And if it’s just reviewing records why are staff who were hired by R administrations not allowed in the buildings, let alone helping with this process?

Another talking point - how can Elon and his crew be given government employee status when they did not apply and compete for the position against other qualified applicants with a hiring panel or have a special hiring status (e.g. disabled military veteran)? If he was appointed, why didn’t he have to be approved by congress? If he’s doing it as a contractor, why didn’t he have to submit a written response to a written request for proposals and have to compete against other qualified contractors? That’s what our government hiring and government contracting laws require.
