Lol, Suraj and Mikey, I love you, but Tom and Ann together is pure dude fantasy fulfillment. It’s not even about looks, he’s too self-interested to make a good boyfriend for someone as grounded as Ann and he has a hard time with the word “no.” No woman is dreaming about a guy who sulked about her being approached by someone else *on tv while they were supposed to be helping out a friend.* I dunno, it’s not really that deep. I just think it’s funny that y’all are clearly thinking of their relationship from Tom’s perspective cuz from Ann’s perspective the whole thing has been a shitshow.

What's wrong with viewing it from Tom's perspective? He probably needs more empathy too, Ann is doing pretty well for herself, she's intelligent, grounded as you said, and extremely attractive. She'll be fine, so it's natural for people to empathize with Tom more, he's the underdog. And I'm also not sure what's wrong with dude fantasy fulfillment especially when Tom does actually try, or liking underdogs like Tom for their determination to fulfill their dreams. Reminds me of that SpongeBob episode where he tries to fly and the whole town hates him for pursuing his dreams, being jealous of people like Tom is understandable, but not fair, as dreamers make the world go round.

@@b.ballooon9225 there’s something wrong with only looking at a relationship from one person’s perspective, that’s for sure. There’s a reason the women on the couch were never convinced of this relationship and it has nothing to with Tom being a dreamer. It made no narrative sense, he doesn’t know how to be a good partner at this point in the story, his desire for Ann is motivated mainly by self-validation, and he makes up a story of how things should go and then acts disappointed when she tells him that’s not what she wants. He is constantly disrespecting her and for his own part, settling for a lack of demonstrable contempt instead of real affection and support. If there are good parts to their relationship, we never get to see them. There’s no chemistry, just “you wore me down.” Like, I think there’s a reason we never see them kiss for real on screen. It’s not even fun to watch them implode. That is why I say it’s pure dude fantasy. Tom is the active agent and Ann is a prize. She is literally shaking her head “no” at him while he tells her that he’ll keep pursuing her “just like she wants.” Nobody aspires to that.

So I don't really agree with the overly judgmental position that especially as you said, the female reactors have taken regarding Tom. Seriously, most people don't start off as perfect relationship material. People learn how to be good partners through experience, so guys like Tom who get less women also have less experience. People then tend to say they don't have lots of experience because of the way they act, but I argue that people like Tom act the way they do because they don't have a lot of experience, because that insecurity he has probably started in his school days. If women constantly shut all non-experienced men down then men will never have the chance to get experienced in the first place. When girls start dating they're all about how the guy they're dating looks, super shallow and superficial, just like Tom and like a lot of boys when they start dating as well. Call it Chimp Brain, humans act more like Chimps when we're young people with little dating experience. Why is that acceptable for women to go through but it's seen as almost disgusting when Tom's going through that. I mean April literally dated two gay guys just so she could kiss them, then dated another guy just to make Andy jealous, she's hardly the picture of someone with mature relationships at the start of the show. Nobody really complains about her doing her stuff though, cause it's cute when a girl does it. While you're right, the pursuing relationship has become a tiring part of our culture, sometimes it's the only way for a guy like Tom to get a girl like Ann. How else are inexperienced men supposed to get girls, wait for the right moment, sounds like a fairy tail and not very realistic. So sometimes they gotta take advice from Hank from Breaking Bad, Persistence. For a lot of not super attractive guys, persistence is their only card to play.
