I feel like Chris’ anxiety started in Pawnee because prior to that he and Ben have always been on the road and never had time to slow down and reflect. But staying at Pawnee allowed him that time to form connections and self-reflect on his relationships. It’s painful but a necessary step for a healthy life.

In all fairness, if you were diagnosed with a rare blood disorder that was supposed to kill you within a month of your birth, you’d probably have constant reminders of your mortality as well, including his distress with ever causing harm to others. He also probably had depression already, but was hiding it under a mask of excessive exercise and unwavering optimism. It was when he encountered people who were genuinely happy with their lives (like Ron, Garry, and Andy) that he realized that he was only masking his unresolved problems, fell into depression, and managed to get professional help for his issues.
