In this one I take a look at the £40 12v Parkside planer from Lidl that looks a lot like the 12v Bosch (at a quarter of the price) along with a £20 mini grinder and £17 drill/driver that are also on the Parkside 12v battery platform - which also looks uncannily like the Bosch…
I’ve put this video out a little off-schedule as these are in Lidl stores now, and once they’re gone they’re gone. I’ll have some early thoughts on the Festool Systainer saw out next, then the 32-year-old Ikea Billy bookcase home office up-cycle project after that.

I bought my first (and still one and only) battery powered drill/driver from Lidl/Parkside more than 6 years ago. And I'm still using it. A couple of years after the purchase I wanted to buy a second battery. So when they were in the shop, I went there and bought that second battery. When I came home, I was surprised, sad and angry, because the new 12V battery didn'it fit into the drill/driver, nor in the charger. I tried again, again and again. It just didn't fit. But, they were the same, weren't they, the old and new battery. At first sight, yes. At second sight too. But then I found out that the notches were not exactly on the same place. Knowing that there was no other solution than to return the new battery, I did that the next day. Because I expected the personnel in the shop would not believe my story, I took my drill/driver and the old battery with me as well. They returned me the money and gave me the number of the LIDL costumer service in Slovakia. They gave me the number of the German factory/distributor that sent me a new old-type version of the battery. The drill/driver still works OK. It doesn't have a lot of power, but enough for more than 70% of the drilling work I do. The main reason that I bought this drill/driver was the quick-release chuck.

I have these three 12v tools, plus the stapler/mini brad nailer & mini circular saw. The mini grinder is extremely handy & I use it most days. Can go through at least 3mm of steal box beam & is great for cutting down bolts & screws. The stapler/brad nailer is perfect for jobs around the house, attaching chicken wire or fixing thin bits of wood like cabinet back panels. The planer is hands & solid. The drill is a handy auxiliary for the 20v drills & impact drivers. The only dud is the mini circular saw. No oompf. Perhaps useful for some very niche small jobs but the cut will be rough.

I just picked up yesterday the drill/driver, the 2ah battery and charger, the 4ah battery and scored the multitool. I'm really impressed with the quality of these given the price. It really does seem that for all the but the most demanding uses the cheap tool really is the better option.

Hopefully they're releasing more and more 12V tools for DIY and garden in the future, I can really see the benefit of having 12V tools for small or light weight tasks

Hello Peter, I have a small property maintenance company and over the years I believe I have purchased everything that Bosch do in their 10.8 / 12v range. Many of the Parkside tools are manufactured in Germany and I cant help but think that perhaps they are made / designed by the people who make Bosch as they are so similar. Over the last 2 years I have also purchased all of the Parkside 12v range. The drill - doesn't feel the quite the same as the Bosch but a quarter of the price, better now as it comes with a metal chuck, the old plastic one took a few turns to tighten on a bit. The multitool - again less than a quarter of the price, does the job but vibrates more which causes fatigue so I'll stick with the Bosch. The mini 76mm grinder- just buy it, same low price but works a treat and if you get a segmented multi material blade it is ace at cutting plastic, especially wafer thin cheap bath panels which are normally a nightmare. Word of caution, wear cut proof gloves as it also cuts skin extremely well. The planer- I get a lot of tight doors to ease and this is so easy / clean to use at shaving off small amounts, I rarely get my big planer out anymore, worth buying some better blades, I found the originals a bit soft. The 12v shears- again way cheaper than Bosch and of course probably not something you'll use every day but very handy. I use them for cutting fabric roller blinds to the required width & also cutting vinyl flooring. I also have the 12v stapler and this works surprisingly well with very few jams. Too be fair the Bosch range in my opinion generally feels a bit nicer, is more comfortable and maybe does the job a bit better but on tools that you don't use all the time the Parkside range is amazing for the money and well worth getting, especially with the low cost of the batteries.

Very interesting video Peter. I am renovating an old boat and invariably my collection of tools (some of them quite expensive) slowly migrate down to the boat until I need something for a job at home only to realise that the blooming thing is 20 miles away. After watching this I am considering getting a few Lidl specials to have on hand as "emergency contingency" for such occasions where I just need to do a quick DIY task for Mrs Danny Boy without having to make a 40 mile round trip. I have no doubt that these are made in China but then to my knowledge so are most if not all of my higher end DeWalt tools 😮. Go figure. 🤔.

I couldn't live without my Parkside 12V driver, it does 99% of my screwing and drilling. Most of the time you just don't need the power of the 20V. The Planer is also pretty decent, used it to plane all the doors in the house, but it struggles a bit on harder woods. The grinder has much more power than I expected, I only bought it because I couldn't find my 20V grinder and I needed to cut some curtain rails. I haven't tried it on anything a bit more substantial. In terms of batteries, the only difference I've found is run time, you seem to get the same power regardless of the capacity.

The quality of these tools looks to be improving and not too dissimilar in appearance to the pro tools. I have the Bosch 12v plainer for exactly that application and I wouldn't be without it. Worth noting I bought it off the back of a Derek Bartlett recommendation and he was spot on.

I have the mini grinder and it's surprising what it can do. Don't run it too long though as it gets quite hot. I have used quite a few Parkside tools over the years. They can be really nice, and they can be a lot less nice. Always have to remember they are not made for intensive use and you need to be gentle with them. Their warranty is usually works pretty well, which is good, because I've had to use it more than once. Sometimes more than once for the same tool in fact. The bosch pro 12V lineup is awesome imo, but the price is definitely not the same. I'm slowly buying more tools in it though, they all work really well for what I do.

Great video and a good reminder to look at Parkside again. Parkside has 2,5 Ah and 5 Ah 12V batteries available as well. At least in my country. And Parkside tools are sold online so no need to run to the Lidl. There is a 12V "performance" drill/driver. I have been looking at a Milwaukee M12 combo set for the lighter work. I have become a bit allergic to cheap items including tools. I prefer to buy quality items that last. But that Parkside performance drill/driver might be a great in between option. It is just so much lighter and compacter and has plenty power for screws in the 4x40 range.

With these parkside tools, as I have found with the erbauer tools from screwfix, you need to make sure you can get consumables (blades, discs etc) from somewhere. They often seem to have odd diameter blades or arbours. Screwfix don't even sell spares for all the erbauer stuff they sell. If they are almost identical to bosch hopefully spares will be available. Also while they are cheap and cheerful with good warranty and returns policies you can't always get a replacement product (as you have observed yourself Peter) so if they do go wrong you can't get another one when you want it.

I have the planer, multi tool and the drill. The multi tool works fine, it does vibrate a lot but gets the job done. The driver was defective, the trigger died after a day and was either max speed or off, so i got that replaced the next day, seems okay since then although I haven't used it much since. The planer soles are terribly misaligned, by the time I noticed it I didn't bother returning it. Will try and fix it eventually, even if it means having a fixed depth of cut somehow, I wouldn't care as long as they are coplanar. They are what they are, cheap tools that I don't expect to last, the 18v angle grinder self destructed a few weeks ago with the brush holders giving in, can't even get a replacent motor anymore apparently. They got quite a bit of work done and I have more quality replacements for all of them now, but they were indispensable when I started out, as I got 5 tools for the price of a makita bare tool planer for example. I'd say if you can afford something better there's no use buying these if your work depends on them, but in a pinch they'll do the job. Probably fine for the occasional hobbyist. You do get a lot for your money.

I have the 12v SDS drill and the 12 drill driver. The 12v SDS is actually nicely powerful for its size and great for use on a ladder due to its weight (provided you watch out for kickback), I put up a few outdoor lights and drilled easily into the exterior cavity walls to mount them. As regards the 12v driver... that has to be probably value tool I have ever bought, I use it all the time as a cordless screw driver or a light duty drill for jobs around the house and it is just solid and convienent. I find 10v a little hard to justify for the range of fairly full on DIY I do, I think it would be a bit underpowered for some jobs compared to my Dewalt impact and drill which can give you the same control if you turn the power down. That and I have a "20v" (it's 18v really!) Parkside multitool so don't want to invest in yet another battery platform. The Parkside cordless stuff isn't bad for the money though I have a few corded items too. I have sent a few bits back under warranty and I can't fault them for honouring it consistently and without fuss, probably better on the customer service front than a lot of big names!

I also have both the parkside and bosch 12v drills. The main differences I found (other than the ones you mentioned) is that my bosch came with 2 batteries compared to 1 for the parkside (which didn’t come as a surprise with the bosch being 6x the price of the parkside at the time), the parkside seems to have a little less torque and doesn’t last as long on a battery charge (all my batteries are 2Ah). The bosch is undoubtedly better quality but if you factor in the price as well, I think the parkside would be the winner. It would be interesting to compare both to the 12V green bosch (but I don’t need yet another cordless drill and I suspect neither do you 😉)

I got all three of the tools mentioned a month back when they first hit stores this time around. Same situation as you, my primary set of tools are Milwaukee m18/m12, but the idea of a 12v planer/grinder appealed but couldn’t justify the price of Milwaukee. Also Got 2 of the drills, great value, because they’re so light, I now reach for them every time over my Milwaukee drills. Only issue to bare in mind is they definitely can’t be expected to take the same amount of agro as the trade brands, 1 of my drills already doesn’t work in reverse, I’m sure it will be exchanged with no drama though. Another thing to be aware of - parkside now produce a cordless tracksaw, hasn’t made it across the pond to uk stores, but available in Europe, at little over £100 looks like a bargain, they can be bought for £150 ish on eBay and I’ve been so tempted, sounds like on for you to try mr tracksaw!

Actually I've found the on/off switch on various Bosch 12v tools to be very flaky for a "Bosch Pro" tool. I use the mini grinder for delicate tiling, mitred edges...cutting trim. The only thing I could do with is a left handed version.... Please.

Yes, it really is a valuable little tool which I now wouldn't be without. In fact, I toyed with the idea of getting a second one now they're available just in case. Just make sure to get a good supply of discs when you can, they're very cheap as you would expect, because, as you say, they don't last that long.

Would you recommend using that planer for quick paint stripping? Or would it quickly gunk up? Of course the risk of going over nails and screws is entirely up to the user but let's say one can do their checking first before proceeding with the planing.

I have had problem with the parkside 4amp batteries at first look, they will allow you to stand a tool on battery end, but I have had occasions when the tool falls over, in my case has been fatal for the batteries. as they brake at shoulders, for a while loose and still working ,but they will eventually fail ,a disign fault, i think they are glued togetther, iv'e never had a 2amp fail. Another thing i have 3 of the 12v drills only because , they have been mislaid, so replaced convinced stolen only to turn up day after purchase of new one. I bet loads of use have been there! But it does not only share the saying about clamps. You can never have to many drills.

I’m on the Bosch Pro 18v system. Bought some of their 12v stuff and was wholly unimpressed by the lack of umph. Bought a Parkside 12v drill yesterday to check it out and it too feels like a toy tool. Maybe it’s just 12v in general. I don’t want to spend Milwaukee money for a light brushless drill and impact 12v kit but I think it’s going that way.

The nominal voltage of a Li-Ion battery is 3.6 Volt. Therefore all 3-cell tools I have from the time past are labeled 10.8 Volts. You're right about marketing people who advanced the voltage of Li-Ion cell from 3.6 to 4.0 Volts, so the 3-cell tools are now labeled as "12 Volts". The tools got a nice boost practically for free, and people recognise "12 Volts" as something both familiar and high quality...

So then Mr Millard, I've decided you are the devil in disguise 😈. Just been to my local DIY store for some wood dye and couldn't resist "popping" into Lidl next door to merely "check out" what you've been talking about. Came out £160 lighter, armed with the cordless grinder, planer, charger, several batteries and various other tools and accessories that seemed too good to miss. After a bit of initial buyers remorse, I am surprised to find that contrary to my previous comment, these are actually made in Germany. No guarantee of being anything special but likely to be better put together than expected. Time will tell. I have over the years developed into a bit of a brand snob for (I think) fair reasons such as you generally get what you pay for. But I think there are times when budget tools have their place (occasional use only, use on cr..ppy materials, low importance/temporary jobs etc.). I have some cheapo tools that are decades old and are holding up fine. We'll see how these fair but I'm quite pleased so far. I am throwing you under the bus though when my wife finds out 😎.

The when they’re gone they’re gone philosophy is a pain, the tool might come back so you can add the grinder at a later date or buy another battery but it might not. I had a similar problem with Aldi’s Ferrex, yes a Bosch or Makita is way more expensive but you can always get a new battery or charger or an additional tool. I was naive and looked for bargains in the past so I have 3 battery platforms Aldi, Lidl and hitachi. The hitachi drill and impact driver I bought 5 years ago are real work horses and really good quality. But i should probably have just bought Makita or Bosch, or DeWalt, Festool being a bit too pricey for the hobbyist!

I've got a few, and they're ok for a while, just the occasional job, but woe betide you if you have to deal with Lidl and their subsidiary "Service Partner". I bought a leaf blower-shredder 1 month ago and the collection bag had not been sewn correctly, so it blew shredded leave everywhere. I've emailed them 5 times so far, and they've asked for the same information 3 times. My lawns are covered in leaves now. I bought the blower-shredder because I have arthritis in my hands which makes raking leaves extremely painful, so I need the collection-shredding function. All the information that they requested was sent as soon as requested. I don't suppose they even read my emails properly in the first place. Dreadful & inattentive so-called "Customer Service".

These 'cheap' tools have become so good nowadays, it's hard to come up with a reason to buy the big brands anymore. What I don't understand is how they can copy Bosch and get away with it, same with Aldi, their Ferrex brand is a shameless clone of the blue Bosch tools. They are not even hiding it, Parkside has a router "POF 1200", which is copied from the Bosch POF 1200.
