Suspense & ESCAPE [remastered]

Күн бұрын

In another popular story that was produced by both Suspense and Escape, we have this excellent version with Parley Baer. He plays a timid man on an ocean cruise that has him saving the life of a beautiful woman and killing bad guys while at Port in Mosombique. Sound quality is excellent.
✓√✓√✓ Lots of STUFF-N-SUCH: The Suspense version features Sterling Holloway (the voice of *Winnie the Pooh) and I uploaded it last year. I think it's the best of all the versions. Four versions exist done by Escape, plus the one from Suspense. I think providing two gives you a good choice, without "duplicate overkill. By the way, when these shows were broadcast live, they did TWO shows . . . One for the east coast, then three hours later for the west. Many of the existing Escape episodes are of both broadcasts. I give you the best sound quality of the two, but I won't disrupt your listening by posting two copies of the exact same show. I'll only post the Escape episodes that aren't "twins."

An excellent episode of "Escape" featuring Parley Baer. It was a very suspenseful, well-written script and very well acted by Parley Baer and a good supporting cast. The fine audio clarity made for listening pleasure. Thank you for making it available.

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered One of my favorite ESCAPE episodes. I never tire of listening to this story by Percival Gibbon. And to think that is Chester Wesley Proudfoot from the original version of "Gunsmoke" playing the lead part. I always get a kick out of one of his lines in the story where he says that "he is not made out of sugar." At times you can detect the voice, but he does an amazing job with one of the great stories from the Golden Age of Radio.

@@richardmcleod5967 This is also one of my favorite stories. I uploaded a version of this same story by Suspense, featuring Sterling Holloway (voice of Pooh) It's in my playlist of "Humorous Episodes" from Suspense. As much as I like Parley, I think Holloway is even better (in this particular story) The productions are essentially identical, except for the lead role. I also have a playlist featuring Parley Baer and Howard "Floyd" McNear. I don't know if you've checked out my 40 different playlists, but if not, you should! - Charlie

I certainly intend to do so. I had no idea that Sterling Holloway and Howard McNear had also performed this role, but am anxious to hear their interpretations. Their personalities are perfect the the role of the 2nd Class Passenger. I got all of my ESCAPE episodes from Radio Archives and I think they only have the Parley Baer one. They do add various other duplicate shows on occasions such as "A Shipment of Mute Fate". I have listened to them all and prefer the Jack Webb version. Part of that is because I love the actress (I don't know her name) that plays Mother Ellis (the woman who brings on the ship her pregnant cat Clara, who turns out the saving grace for them all in killing the snake). I know (or think) an actor imitates the sounds of the cat, but it is done so realistically the cats I have jump up and act as if there is a cat in the room when I play this on the radio. So, if an actor is imitating a cat, he must be doing a very good job!@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered

@@richardmcleod5967 Holloway did the Suspense version. I didn't mean to imply that Howard McNear did "Passenger." Still, there is yet another version done by Escape, with (if I recall correctly) Harry Bartel. I don't plan to upload that episode. Two of the same story (for most casual listeners) is plenty. That's why I rarely post repeats or duplicates . . . There are actually quite a few stories done multiple times by both Suspense and Escape. - Charlie @Suspense & ESCAPE!

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered Dear Charlie I am so sad to hear your news. I had no idea of what you are going through and how you feel. It is difficult to understand 'why' such things happen. In my own experience I can only tell you that Jesus wants you to know the He Cares about you and your lovely wife. He has heard the silent voice of your heart and wants to hold your hand each time you cry, You are special and loved by God your Father. Psalm 139 talks of how God knows us. Also Psalm 147 verse 3.... "... He heals the broken hearted and binds up ALL their wounds...." I have been praying for you both for some time. Would you like to share your wife's name? May the peace that only Jesus gives be in your heart and on your home and His arms around you both drawing you closer under His wing. Amen. Sending you both love wrapped in a hug. Julia and fatty. 🙏💖💐

@@GodISGood103 My wife's name is Theresa. I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner - she's been transferred to a big hospital, quite some distance away. With gas at $5 dollars it's going to be hard for me to go visit. The care facility was only six blocks away, so I went over almost every day. I'll try to stay in touch with you.

@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered Charlie I appreciate how difficult it is so don't feel bad for not getting in touch sooner or keeping in touch. I do understand. I am praying for your self and Theresa. May God our Father draw you both closer to Himself and His love for you both be felt in your hearts. It is difficult to make sense of why bad things only happen to good people. I don't know why but I do know that God IS Good, the Bible says we wrestle against spiritual darkness which would have us believe that God punishes us when in fact He gave His only begotten son to die in our place because He loves us. If you have a Bible the gospel of John is a good place to start, as you read ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you and teach you. God bless and keep you both safe in His care and give you His peace. 🙏🙏🐈💃 1/06/2022

I knew I'd heard this fun story before, but with a different cast. It probably was the "Suspense" production, which is also very good, as Charlie noted. I've also recently noticed that some of these stories were repeated, or rerun by the same series, but with different casts. Apparently, they didn't just rerun the same recording. For example, every time "Suspense" replayed the very popular, "Sorry, Wrong Number," it was a new production, even though Agnes Morehead always played the lead. I think they repeated that drama 5 times over the 20 year run of the program. And there were also east coast & west coast productions of some shows. There's a whole lot about old time radio I don't know much about. But I love it & find it fascinating. And out of all the programs I've heard, I think "Suspense" was consistently the highest quality. I can always depend on a good story & well produced show. "Escape" is also excellent...plus "Dragnet," "Fort Laramie," "The Six Shooter," "Dimension-X," "X Minus One," Lux Presents Hollywood" & "Gunsmoke," just to name a few. I'd be interested in hearing what programs some of you other fans love. I'll bet there's something great I haven't Heard yet.

Try to always read my descriptions. I often will often pass on what I've learned over the years. You're right about Sorry, Wrong Number. It was done seven times. I posted it once, a fully restored edition. It's in the Suspense top ten Playlist and the Agnes Moorehead Playlist. As I've mentioned in many descriptions Suspense and Escape shared many of the same stories . . . also actors, directors and musicians! (one reason they are a natural fit for each other) Make sure you go through my 70 playlists - Look for one with episodes of "The Chase!" A great series I think you'll like.

Since both "Suspense" & "Escape" made productions of this story, might it have been based on a short story that originally appeared in print?

If it's an adaptation of an existing story, almost always they'll mention it in the opening and/or closing credits. Many Escape episodes are based on short stories or novels.
