Last week the Federal Government introduced a bill to establish an Independent Parliamentary Standards Commission. The bill aims to stamp out bullying, harassment, sexual harassment and assault and discrimination in Parliament House. Included in the bill are penalties for Federal MPs who fail to meet behaviour standards, and ability to require MPs to be removed from parliamentary committees.
Under Standing Order 455B, the South Australian Parliament has a Code of Conduct that was adopted in 2021. At the time of adoption, the Greens moved an amendment that would require a fine or suspension if a Member were to contravene the code. The amendment was not supported at the time by any other party.
Greens Democracy spokesperson Robert Simms MLC asks the Attorney General whether the Malinauskas Government is supportive of introducing penalties for Members of this place who breach the Code of Conduct, and whether the State Government will commit to establishing an Independent Parliamentary Standards Commission.
