Greens Attorney General spokesperson Robert Simms MLC speaks in favour of the Statutes Amendment (Victim Impact Statements) Bill which makes 3 amendments to the Sentencing Act 2017 and the Victims of Crime Act 2001.
The first amendment ensures that victims have the opportunity to prepare a victim impact statement in instances where a guilty plea is entered unexpectedly and the court would then normally proceed immediately to sentencing submissions and the imposition of a sentence.
The second amendment prohibits prosecutors from editing victim impact statements prior to them being provided by the court.
Finally, the third amendment addresses the right of victims to be informed about their entitlement to provide a victim impact statement.
