EMI did put stampers for not just Beatles albums, it was for other artists that were on the EMI family of labels including HMV, Columbia, Stateside, and the new Tamla Motown label in which a lot of Motown acts like Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Diana Ross & the Supremes, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, and others from the US where it arrived in the UK three years later after the Beatles first UK album. BTW, when the "Please Please Me" album was first released, the US wasn't ready yet. In 1963, Vee-Jay, an R&B label based in Chicago took a stab at acquiring the rights to the first UK Beatles album. Their first single "Please Please Me" was released on the Vee-Jay label in 1963, and Dick Biondi was among the very first DJ to play a Beatle song where it was heard on WLS for the first time. Unfortunately, "Please Please Me" flopped on the US charts. When "I Want To Hold Your Hand" went to #1 in the US on Capitol, Vee-Jay re-released "Please Please Me" a year later in 1964, and it was in the Top 5 on the US charts, and of course their first US Beatles album called "Introducing the Beatles" on Vee-Jay, and it became a collector's item, and songs from this first UK album were Top 5 hits where every Beatles song peaked from #5 to #1 and it set a record of each and every Beatles song are on the Top 5 according to Billboard's Hot 100 survey which includes "Love Me Do", "Twist & Shout" and "Please Please Me", and "She Loves You" which was also released on the Swan label in the US, and that was their second #1 hit.

Makes me wish I could fly to England and step into a time machine. Who would have thought the inferior to the mono 2 track stereo would become more valuable than the original mono? I heard the production ratio at the time was was 10 mono albums to 1 stereo. Performance flaws and all, I still like that stereo version. Only the Beatles could do that. Thanks, Doctor Andrew.

As an Australian Beatles fan, I quickly checked my B&G labelled PPM mono copy, only to find that it was printed in Sydney Australia, with a totally different stamped code. At least for a very short time I was very excited that I may have actually had an early first pressing! I'm still very happy to regularly listen to my copy of PPM! Interesting video; the Gramophone stamper code reminds me of how albums sold in Japan starting in June 1984 used the Nihon Record dating system to mark their exact release date: "NIHORECD" was the code used, N was for 1984, I is 1985, H is 1986 and so on, and this was used up to the early '90s before they switched to using the regular year number.

If I still lived in the UK then I could hold out some small hope of one day finding a copy in the wild. But being in the US, it means most of my UK pressings have to come from online which means often paying top dollar.

I own a 2014 Please Please Me in Mono. I also own a 1970s German Please Please Me in Stereo on the Apple label. Now I want the 2012 stereo! (Many people say the 2012 sounds like rubbish but it'd still be cool to have).

Love the content.. watch out for resales on eBay as well. There are even sellers who sell their own items basically to themselves again to inflate the prices of collectibles. The former isn’t as nefarious, and the later is dastardly. Also, for certain rare items (including the US Beatles VJ stereo record) have been sold as replicas which at least indicates the possibilities that their are fakes being sold as legit. I had an eBay business for a few years and it’s not just bad sellers the scams buyers regularly take part in we’re genuinely surprising to me. That’s not to say there’s aren’t genuine rarities there just that I’d always use extreme caution with sites like eBay. Proxy bid is a little better but it’s better to know the seller of anything truly rare or be educated enough to identify what you need within return timeframes. This channels an exceptional resource. I wish there was more love given to US rarities! But, maybe I need to search through the archives? Cheers.

And speaking of the Beatles first UK album, in the US, Vee-Jay Records put out “Introducing The Beatles” in early 1964 featuring all of the songs from their “Please Please Me” album. There were two versions of the album. One has “PS I Love You” and “Love Me Do”, and the second has “Ask Me Why” and “Please Please Me”. It came out just ten days before “Meet The Beatles” was released on the Capitol label featuring their first breakthrough #1 hit “I Want To Hold Your Hand”.

During one of my visits to Liverpool, I was staying at my friends' place in Runcorn. Of course, I could not help but also check their record collection. Sure enough, in amongst all the other old Beatles lp's, there it was: a black & gold beauty! Purchased from NEMS at the time of release. My friends had no idea about its value. So that was good day for all involved. Haha! (btw, as a fellow collector of the old Parlophone stereo lp's, I am looking forward to your next video!)

I recall a record dealer telling me that early stereo records didn’t actually have as good sound quality as the mono ones of the time. i.e. they hadn’t yet got the technology right (as with early CDs). He told me the mono pressings of this particular Beatles record sounded far better than the stereo ones - probably another reason they didn’t sell so well.

I still do have about 350 vinyi albums and some singles one or two might be worth a few bob, i'll never sell them so it doesen't matter. Cheers

As others have said here, a new LP in the US was $3.99, which translates to roughly $39.00 in 2023, so new vinyl is about the same price, when adjusted for inflation. Any serious collector knows about this record, but this is still this is an excellent video. While I could never afford a mint minus copy of this pressing. This record, or this music, belongs in every collection. My own issues of this music are a 1963 first pressing New Zealand issue Please Please Me, which was unplayed new old store stock, and a nice mint minus first pressing Canadian Twist & Shout LP. Both were bought years ago, very cheaply on ebay back in the early 2000s, back when ebay was a very different place. The same can be said of my mint minus original mono Beatles For Sale,and Parlophone stereo Rubber Soul.

We had two mono butchers, tons of rare garage/psychedelic rock like the electric toilet, the oxfords, egg, german psych like kollektiv, streetmark, Can, and much much more. The guy i worked for was a concert promoter and former roadie for the replacements. He once booked metallica with dave mustaine and cliff burton in the 80s. And guy was present when the clash took the cover photo for london calling. A total legend.

I've been a Beatles fan since they came to America in '64. I have my first Beatles album that I received from my great aunt in 1964 PLUS, a bunch of a old Beatles. I really miss the Beatles, they were making two, maybe three albums a year. I paid $1.00 at a garage sale, in '77 for the butcher sleeve Bleatles. $1.00!! I doubt you could even FINED that cover any more. I have a lot of old Beatle albums Beatle memorabilia which I'm going to will to my great nephew's.😎 even though I've I've never met met them.🌉

Following on from the last video, I’ve just recently acquired an original Australian mono copy of A Hard Days Night, which was in very poor shape; the cover was ripped in several places, though the LP itself looked quite good. I say, this stereo Please Please Me should be kept in a plastic outer sleeve, to insure it don’t get damaged.

Please please me was the very first Beatles CD I have ever bought when I became a huge Beatles fan I bought it at a record store called warehouse music I miss that store. When I bought the city back then it was the first time released on CD back in 1987 I bought it a few years back probably in 2003 or so, it was the mono mix I had never heard the stereo versions of all the songs until I got the Beatles stereo box that it was a real pleasure for me to hear the stereo version finally. I love the fact that John Lennon screamed at the last track Twist and Shout which is one of the greatest performances ever decide to leave my kitten alone and unreleased song from 1964. I love the fact that the Beatles record of their first album in one day which is amazing to me even from today’s standards. I can’t wait to see what videos you’re going to put out next. Did you know that Vijay had a version of all the songs called introducing the Beatles in America in 1964?

I saw one of these for sale on ebay last year for £6000 and the seller wanted £10 postage on top! amazing. If you want a great sounding analogue stereo version without selling your kidney for the ridiculous price of this one then I'd recommend the German 'Horzu' version that Parlogram talked about in the video on the best stereo versions of each albums. I can't quite remember the details but I think this version used tapes which were either closer to the original masters than the British versions and/or had less done to them during the mastering: either way it's a different and in my opinion better sounding mix certainly than the 2009 stereo remasters. I heard details I haven't done in other mixes. The matrix numbers are: SHZE-117 -A2 SHZE-117- B-2 You can get the original 'Horzu' label version called 'Die Beatles - Die berühmten Vier aus Liverpool' with a very different, new wave looking, cover with George sporting a black eye. Probably set you back £60 or so for a decent condition copy. Or you can get a 70s German Please Please Me on the Apple/Electrola label (there are several versions), which used the same stampers. I got a NM/VG+ copy for £30 on Discogs. the crazy thing to think about is that beatles didnt include alot of their best/hit songs in their albums. imagine if please please me had beatles 3 best 1963 songs, I wanna hold ur Hand, She loves you and From me to you. or the help album- i feel fine, day tripper, we can work it out. revolver = paperback writer, rain, White album = Hey jude, across the universe, lady madonna. Hi Andrew, Henry here again, great vid as ever, nothing i can really add to other than the Northern songs & crossover copies whilst as you say much much rarer are probably not quite as desirable as the Dick James one but there won't be a lot in it.. Condition is of course everything obviously & even a well loved copy will make USD 2-3., My own copy is like yours but it took a bit of Mike Brewer style wheeler dealer trading & upgrading to get it like that, my initial outlay was GBP 2k but i've managed to get that down to 500 & upgrade the sleeve & disc - so not a bad score lol !! Oh & as you know a decent gold sleeve - mono or stereo can be like finding hen's teeth, gold discs are much better survivors so a good sleeve can massively ramp up the value, it's a front of house thing lol. Oh & i have decided not to bother chasing a Northern songs or cross over copy as that would simply be an indulgence i'd find hard to justify lol cheers mate

I recently had a guy disagreeing with my comment about the Beatles still being discussed 50 + years after their end ? I have just recently rediscovered vinyl and I think a lot of younger music fans have as well. If you are into vinyl you are most likely a high chance of discovering the Beatles. Every time they seem like they may be consigned to history something happens to bring them once again into the modern times.

I really love the history behind the Beatles first album please please me it was great What is interesting is that there are no stereo recordings of love me do PS I love you or she loves you and I’ll get you What is interesting is when the Beatles record in the first album John Lennon had a bad cold but amazingly he managed to pull off the vocals somehow. I especially love the please please me song and stereo and mono because you get to hear the songs in different ways like one channel and saying the wrong words in the stereo version.

been there, done that. I have been lucky enough to have owned and sold many Beatles LP's But why or how could George Martin produce a beautiful stereo sound for Cilla Black but give us the stupid weird stereo for the early Beatles. I actually believed Please Please Me existed in proper stereo. I bought several LP's and spent a small fortune on German and Japanese CD's only to be disappointed, that was until 2019 when someone gave PPM and WTB the love and attention they deserved and I finally heard them in 'Spectral Stereo'. I have nothing against vinyl, I still enjoy mine but needs must. Keep up the great work.

@@jrgboy The problem is, EMI can bring them out in various guises, Super Duper this and Better Sounding that, and fans will buy them. But once they bring out proper stereo versions it stops. What more can they do.. Once you have heard what I have heard, you will die happy. Beautiful stereo sound, OK it's been made out side of official. It's not that I do not care, I have bought official releases and tired of wasting more money on the same. NOTE..The people who made these, issued them as a complete session, out takes and all. I made my on Albums from the relevant takes and they mixed Love Me Do and PS I Love You into what was regular left and right channeled stereo..

@@jrgboy there are a couple of 'people' working on The Beatles. Digitally Extracted Stereo, does a great job, I have a file full of such mixes some sound better that others There was also purple chick which had a great sound but were no different to regular issue except they included out-takes for the first time. I cannot confirm how Spectral Stereo was achieved as they or he does not state on the artwork, except to say Modern Technology. He does state however, "On this set I have separated the vocals from everything else on the right channel and moved them to the centre. This means that John's (and on one song George's) guitar and ambience are now isolated on the right. This gives an open airy sound with nice separation and without the annoyance of having vocals on one side" I have just played 'Twist And Shout' , DES has a definite bass on the left which I wasn't keen on, Spectral has a more left and right sound with the bass being just being 'there' without knowing exactly where..

​@@Parlogram The Help! long play has the sleeve in about 90% good as it has dust and wear in the edge facing the opening of it as it has been opened to extract and put in the vinyl disc. The plastic covering is a disaster and the inner sleeve is in 40% good condition, it has a drawing of The Beatles faces of The Beatles album (The White album) that I draw in the early 1970’s. The vinyl is as good as a well maintained record, it has been played only in high fidelity record players as Thoren and Dual and once in a Garrard turntable, but only once in 1973 or 74 in a party of early teenagers (I was 12 or 13) and the only song played in the Garrard was on Help! The vinyl has no scratches at all but the sound of shrss,,,, normal in la vinyl records. My father bought the long play in 1966 for my mother because she loved Help! I was 5 year old then and I remember that everything in England in 1966 was Beatles, the air you breathed, every sound and noise you heard, every poster in the streets, everything was Beatles. Originally a Nepalese friend of my father bought for my mother in Slough the 45rpm record (I remember it because I was there in the car) but it was not Help! it was “Somebody help me yeah” from The Spencer Davies Group. The Nepalese did not like western music or The Beatles, he asked for the record Help and the shop sold him “Somebody help me yeah”, he could care less, he did not know it was not The Beatles Help. I still have “Somebody help me yeah” it in its Fontana paper sleeve, condition: terrible, and this record has been played everywhere in low quality heavy arms record players but still sounds great and does not get stuck in scratches (e-ya, e-ya, e-ya....)

What ho Andy , no matter how many times I see this sleeve I always get momentarily caught out in thinking the bottom right-hand corner of the front sleeve has a burn mark on it , catches me out all the time
