I feel sorry for Spike, honestly; him being the only boy - and a child at that - amongst a group of mares means he's always overshadowed, left by the wayside. He _needed_ and _deserved_ more attention, and episodes that solely focused on him instead of the mares, but NOPE - "this is a show for young girls", so the mares have to hog the spotlight! And he has to be portrayed as childish and stereotypically "boyish" as possible!

@Midnight Blue You can't just blame Spike episodes for that. EVERYONE was suddenly a massive jerkass in "Putting your hoof down" just so Fluttershy had people to be "assertive" to. Or "Leap of Faith" where half the crowd was injured or had an ailment just in time to be sold a supposed cure-all tonic. There are plenty of episodes where the way ponies behave (or look) revolves solely around the plot and isn't present anywhere else. Discord is jealous of Tree Hugger for being Fluttershy's friend, seemingly ignoring she had six other close friends all this time.

The way Spike's character gets handled in this show is truly fascinating to me. He goes from a voice of reason who helps others resolve their issues or even saves the day to a magnet for bad luck who suddenly sucks at everything he does and has the whole universe against him. For every Crystal Empire and Gauntlet Of Fire, we get a Princess Spike or Spike At Your Service.

I always loved Spike because he's been devoutly loyal to Twilight from the very start, and he is genuinely great as a "voice of reason" supporting character in most episodes. However when the episode is solely about him, the writers fail to give him basic common sense, even though this is literally one of his main gimmicks when he's in other episodes. Hell, in the very first episode Spike *was* the voice of reason, telling Twilight to listen to Celestia's letter, and trying to pull her out of her shell, among other things.

None of the decisions he made after that point played any part in the disaster, only the ones he made while he still had good intentions. Also, as LittleshyFiM pointed out, blaming even those decisions is a stretch. No matter how you slice it, Spike abusing his position is not responsible for the disaster.

Also trees don't naturally grow to have weak bases, the whole tree problem is caused by mistreatment of the trees from the Canterlot ponies (desperate trees tend to destroy water mains). This explains why Fluttershy was not in this episode.

This episode is a prime example of the writers not knowing/caring about what to do with Spike in his episodes until Gauntlet of Fire. I swear in most of his episodes he's either fixing a problem he caused or being set up to fail/look bad. Not to mention a lot of the bad episodes, he has to move to plot alone most of the ep when he's on his own. Spike has always been at his best working off other characters. It's kinda a thing with comic relief characters and why when shows or episodes have the comic relief as the focus? More times than not, it doesn't pan out very well. I've ranted various times on DA, Twitter, and Mastodon through the years about how I felt Spike had some of the most potential in the entire show. Being the only dragon in the world of ponies. At times feeling like an outcast. Visiting the dragon lands and having them push him around realizing he doesn't belong there either. When maybe in his episodes or in the background he spends time figuring who he is and what he wants to be. Dragon Quest is one of the biggest offenders to that because he hung around with a bunch of very stock teenage bully dragon characters. (Trust me. You don't want me to get into how much I despise Garble.) You could have started with him hanging out with them but instead have him being seen from afar by a elder dragon from afar and eventually pulled him away from the teen dragons to give him a bigger perspective on how to find out who he is. Shit. Maybe said dragons could have connections to ponies too. I could make a blog about this (in fact I have in the past) but you get the point. Until Gauntlet of Fire, the show just didn't know how to bring out the best of Spike in HIS episodes.

Okay but like the thing about Spike is that the only reason he is a villain in this scenario is that he was like *evil laugh “Princess spike.” If he hadn’t gotten power hungry he would not be at fault here because Cadence must have known that all of these things are going on on that particular day. I mean the fact that Cadence was like “Princess Twilight has about 50 things that ponies are expecting her to do, but she needs to sleep, so unless you just ask Celestia what to do, lets give you an impossible task.” Justice for Spike and his bad writing

Cadence saw what Spike was doing and chose not to intervene. Also, great idea to let the trees grow until they're a public hazard before starting to cut them on the very day of an important event. Good job, Fancy Pants! Excellent planning ahead there! And nobody told anyone that Princess Twilight is resting and set up someone to take on her duties while she is? Even more great planning! And how do people know where Twilight is, but *not* know that she's resting and unavailable? Sheesh. And the leaky, on the edge of bursting water pipe is still running while someone's working a jackhammer next to it? Moar great planning! And Cadence doesn't even think of correcting that when she literally sees Spike tell the worker to stop using the Jackhammer, questioning him at a point where he's not even doing it for selfish reasons. Yes, Spike was a douche in this, but the entirety of the desaster wasn't really his fault.All the things that led to desaster were things that he did in order to do what Cadence ordered him to do, which is to make sure that Twilight can sleep. I mean, he could have just closed the window instead of telling the entirety of Canterlot to be quiet, but I guess then we wouldn't have an episode... This is really the only episode in MLP that was so horribly written that I got annoyed by it literally as I was watching it for the first time. Easily my #1 worst episode in all of MLP.

Rather than, "the episode about Spike abusing power turned into one about working together", it was: an episode about Spike being dumb but trying his best for the first 60% of the episode, then about Spike turning evil and abusing power (which he did RIGHT AFTER Cadence asks if he was, for - NOT JOKING - only 30 seconds!), then the repercussions of his dumb mistakes for the next 6 minutes, THEN an episode about working together for the last 2 minutes. I really can't fathom how Neil could ever think this was good writing, and even more so how Hasbro could rehire him to write another episode, especially when you consider the even worse train-wreck that was "What About Discord".
