She’s usually pretty quiet, but my parrots love to make noise when I talk and not do tricks when on film! Lol!

I adopted a moustache parakeet a few months ago and noticed she wasn’t eating or drinking. I would bring the bowl of water up to her mouth and she was scared but did take a sip here and there. After 2-3 days I said that’s it, you gotta eat and get some food in you. I decided to hand feed her to get something in her and a few hours after that she started eating and drinking on her own. When I got my caique who was being rehomed. He was great with eating and drinking and had no issues. On the other hand he seemed so sweet but about half hour in started biting every male in site. He has since warmed up to them but now targets my daughter. He’s just been very unpredictable. I think every parrot no matter where you get it from, must be monitored to make sure they are consuming food and water. :)

I completely agree, every parrot must be monitored- babies seem more likely not to eat but you just never know. Is your Caiuqe friendly?

@@ParrotBliss like I mentioned he’s really unpredictable. He’s adapted well to the males in my family now but about 3 weeks in to him being here, he flew at my 13 year old daughter with whom he was fine with before, and bit her very hard. I look tor triggers to see what we could be doing wrong but can’t find anything. It’s something we really have to watch out for and hesitate allowing others around him. For the most part I’m his person but a couple weeks ago he bit me hard for the first time and their bites are probably one of the worst I’ve experienced, they tend to hang on and not release quickly. Besides that bad habit of his we all really enjoy him and think he’s just the cutest. I’ve thought and am considering getting another caique for him, around the same age of 4, but now am wondering does the type of caique matter. I’ve only seen black caped and white bellied caiques with their own type and not blended together so not sure if I could introduce a black caped to my white bellied caique.

@@amirah77ful either species of Caique should be fine- if you get a baby, you won’t be able to put them together for at least a year. Sounds like you were thinking about getting a four year old, if you can. Not easy to find- lmk how it goes.

@@ParrotBliss yeah I figured I wouldn’t be able to. My caique is 4 so I’d be looking for another his age. We’ll see though :)

Today is the first day my baby Caique is really eating on his own. I’ve been feeding him with a bent spoon for the past 3 days. Today is the first day he actually ate from his cup but he still begged for me to feed him. I mixed mashed vegetables, crushed pellets and a little organic, unsweetened apple sauce. Of course he had to be fed on a towel on my table. He is used to getting fruit in the afternoon. So I gave him a small piece of apple. He did hold it. Do you think he’s on the right track? He is very playful and loves his toys. He’s just learning to step up. Any advice is welcomed.😀

Was he supposed to be weaned? Do you have baby food? Glad you are feeding him!
@1hawaii21

Yes he’s supposed to be weaned. It’s odd that she texted me last evening asking how he was doing. She never did that with the other bird I got from her. He eats a little on his own, vegetables and fruit. He eats the soft food I give him. Today I gave him a little scrambled egg with the mash I give him. I also got some nestling food to add to the mash. Gloria assured me he was eating on his own. She said he was playing me. Even so, I’ll continue to feed him as long as he begs.

@@1hawaii21 Birds don’t just wean- it’s a process, just like human babies. Parents keep feeding the babies for some time just less and less often. I would say the baby is looking to bond or is feeling insecure- which only makes sense, since everything has changed for him. I would get some baby food to feed on a spoon. Fulfilling the need to feel loved and secure by being fed- I KNOW- makes a mature human. I observe the same in birds. Creates the sense that “I’m a valued, loved and cared for, member of the flock.

I’ve never hand fed a parrot. I have hand fed robins, sparrows and blue jays. The best thing is they gape. I used a bent teaspoon and for the sparrows I used a bent demitasse spoon. I gently held his head and gently rubbed either side of his beak. When he opened his beak I was able to give him a little. I fed him from the spoon until he caught on and started eating from my small bowl. Now when I bring him to the table he hops onto the bowl and eats. I just figured I will feed hi for as long as he asks. I do find he really fills his little crop. Thank you for the info.😘😘😘
