Our Amazon has done and does some baiting and switching. I think he thinks it's funny 😆 When he was pretty young he'd sometimes say step up and then bite if someone reached for him. He didn't usually do that with his 2 parronts (my son and me) who he has the closest bond with. He doesn't do that any more, though, thank goodness. Maybe because we told everyone not to get close enough for him to bite, but to call him from enough of a distance that he had to hop/ flap his wings to land on their arm. (Like a couple of feet away. ) We also had them do that because most of the rest of our family weren't very good at reading his body language to tell if he would want to step up or was acting defensive. Also that way he didn't feel threatened or like they were trying to force him to step up. The other thing he'll do sometimes is say want snuggles when really he wants to play. With that at least he lifts his foot up to intercept your hand so u know he wants to wrestle and play with u. (He can be a little rough, though. ) He does also ask for snuggles when he really does want them which is our FAVORITE! He actually likes everyone in our family pretty well. Especially the ones who spend more time with him. Also, he thinks kids are awesome and fun!

Wow! You have a very cool Amazon! I can’t believe he asks for snuggles! So cool -

For me as a dog owner it is 100% clear, never pet a foreign dog, you enter their territory and their personal space, so I think the African grey was right to bite😂 This was such a good clip, thank you!!

Yeah, that's how it should be. Respect. Unfortunately, I find that most people want to poke a parrot- which would only get their hand bitten off! Well, maybe not the whole hand - lol!

Thanks for talking about this! But coming from a first time bird owner (second if you count my budgies 12 years ago) that’s not a lot to get along with. I think I get why your video is structured this way because firstly different species behaves differently. Secondly, we don’t all want the same thing from our birds. I’m currently looking to get a bird, but I do not want a “starter” bird because I’m a one bird person. I’m not the kind who would rehome my pets (idealistic) because I don’t see them as temporary companions. Not judging anyone because birds are just different from dogs and cats. My thought process would go from macro to micro - from species to a bird as an individual… With that in mind, my list of concerns would be: Macro: 1) what species would do well with dogs? 2) what species are confident for dogs? 3) what species are independent enough for someone who works 9-6 (+3hours travelling time), 12 hours away from home? 4) which species is going to be best suited for confidence training? 5) which species will be okay with me handling my dogs? 6) which species is apartment friendly? Micro: 1) how to choose a confident bird? 2) how to choose a biddable bird? 3) how to choose a bird that wouldn’t get jealous of my dogs? 4) how to choose and independent bird? Well… this list is really non exhaustive because the concerns could go on and on… haha but you get what I mean… Personally I am currently thinking of getting a Hahns macaw because of your videos on them! They’re sweet, interactive, independent, biddable, velcro birds… but I still don’t see a lot of how to choose a bird for a house with dogs. I look forward to your advice! ☺️

Great video. I think most people get bitten because they don’t read or know how to read their bird. I get a good warning. My Caiques will cackle and fuss. If pushed they will give a quick little nip. It doesn’t hurt or break the skin but I get it and back away. I agree that African Grey parrots and Cockatoos can be unpredictable. Definitely would not recommend for a novice bird owner. ❤️

I think Caiques can be either moody or temperamental - of course, all parrots can. Caiques seem like they are so happy -- until you cross the line (in the blink of an eye) at which point they have to put you IN YOUR PLACE! With love, sure, but they are in charge! :)

Great video thanks for posting this response. Those were all very useful points. I have a caique for the past 16 years and she bites me from time to time for no reason. I'll have her out and I'm sitting on the couch and she will ambush me and bite me ear hard. I usually tap her on the beak with my finger and that seems to snap her out of her attack mode. Otherwise she is really sweet and cuddly. Sometimes when I have to put her back in her cage and she's not ready she will snap at me but at least there is a reason for her ire. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Juan, your Caique, I feel, needs a companion. If there is a Caique at the rescue, in your shoes, I would get a Caique for my Caique. Like I did with my Macaw 🙂🦜

@@ParrotBliss But I've been told that my little Caique has been alone too long and would not get along with another bird. She is very aggressive and opinionated! LOL

@@floridamadman59 How did she react to the Golden? Are you going to keep her separate from the new birds? I don't believe there is a way to know whether or not she would like another Caique (or parrot) unless you try... I think she's biting you in the morning because she's been alone (at night). Emerald too doesn't bond with the other birds, but I don't have another Hahn's. And she obviously likes to be around the other birds. It happens, but most of the time, a parrot will be happy to have a flock- the flock is well-being and parrotness. I'm guessing your Caique did not respond negatively to the Golden in the house. If nothing else, she liked having another parrot around. Hope that helps.

@@ParrotBliss We kept the Golden away from her because he was a baby and he didn't seem to be really well. I was afraid my Caique would hurt him. I was going to wait until he was more mature before we allowed any interaction. But yes I am planning to grow my flock starting with a conure from the Golden Cockatoo and I am still considering an older Golden that they had there last time I was there. Did you happen to see it? I am going to be at the Golden Cockatoo on Thursday the 15 of July around noon. I put a deposit on the baby but if they still have the older one there I'll make them an offer for it. I am also going to consider another Caique, I just love Caiques! I am retiring in three years and I will have more time to take care of a larger flock. Your posting have been very helpful, I am realizing how little I rally know about parrots. I had an African Grey 30 years ago and he died because I didn't really know how to take care of him/her. It lasted only 5 years and it was a sweetheart! It only bit me once when I first got him/her and then never again. It bonded with me and I used to have it out all the time and it just wanted to be cuddled all the time. I'm very sad even now when I think of him/her. Anyway, you made me realize that I need to take my time with the adoption process.

@@floridamadman59 Yes, when I was there the older Golden was still there. Don't know about now- Yeah, I had a version of your AG - mine was a Caique. I was still learning to take care of parrots and didn't see the signs :( She was a soul-mate and my heart still aches for her. So glad I'm helping - you have the advantage of getting to know the parrots at the rescue. Given some time, I think you'll know which to get. I feel like Binx helped heal Tikko. It will be interesting to hear if your Goldens help the rescues, if they rescues need some rehabilitation - which I would guess (otherwise they probably wouldn't be in the rescue). Of course, they only need it because people don't always know how to take care of them, and unfortunately, the parrot's wellbeing pays the price. So, I think you're doing an awesome thing by having both (rescue and not). And the fact that you'll have time with them in 3 years is fantastic. I can't spend enough time taking care of my flock... I always think they need another brach, another pet...

Regarding adoption, are you saying buying a bird online through a reputable breeder wouldn’t work? I’ve adopted a few that way and I feel bummed and disappointed because while it might be a healthy beautiful baby… I won’t feel a spark. And then I have birds that don’t make me happy.. I never know what to do. Locally the bird shops only have birds that are already reserved from HATCHLINGS, there’s literally no way to bond because they are all spoken for. My local rescue demands a credit check and I was denied for too many windows, so I’m left to choose online and hope for the best 😓
