Once I make eye contact, she'll immediately start nibbling my ear. Chloe is my first cockatiel, & she and I have become best buds ever since I got her.

There’s this thing that my cockatiel does which I’m not sure is a sign of affection, but whenever im whistling or showing him something interested, he tilts his head to a 45 or 90 degree angle with no purpose, it’s not to see about or below him. But he looks so happy when he does it, it’s like there’s the living embodiment of joy in his eyes while also being the dictator of our household, always demanding attention and flying to us to eat our hair

Our house cockatiel mostly tolerates me, she will hang upside down and flap her wings sometimes, break grind, but she hates being touched, She'll only let me hold her is when I'm feeding her. But she did stare and tilt her head at me for a bit, which was new, Regardless I like to respect her boundaries. ❤️

The cockatiel I have was one that belonged to my daughter. She left him behind when she married a Welshman in Wales. She got him from PetCo in town. She had been watching this bird for some time in their aviary and noticed that many people would go in there and torment the birds. My daughter had reported this many times but nothing changed. The cockatiel went on sale for a price that she could afford and she bought him. That was 14 years ago. He was a year old when she got him. My daughter had been in to see the bird most every day and talked to him a lot. She even ran off people that were tormenting the bird. When she brought him home, he was very distrustful of everyone and would try to bite you even while you were feeding and watering him. Even after all this time, he still doesn't trust people and will try to bite even if he knows you. He's 15 years old now and has slowed down a lot and with me being his only caregiver left, he still won't allow me to pet him or give him scratches or pick him up. He will climb all over me and poo & pee on me but won't let me hold him per se. He's been a poor tormented bird but I love his silly self. He loves the Spinners group song Rubberband man. He will bounce himself up and down when he listens to it and chirps along with the song. I know he may be leaving me soon because of his age but I will always remember this silly little bird with the big chip on his shoulder who loved music and getting into mischief, my Indybird. ☺

Awh, that’s beautiful! I loved reading your & Indi’s story & good on your daughter for chasing off the tormentors. With such a rough start to his early life I can see why Indi would be distrusting but it sounds like he/she trusts you in his/her own way (by climbing all over you). I suspect if Indi didn’t like you she would fly away from you. Oh & cockatiel can live for a very long time so you might have Indi for some time yet. My Cockatiel, Sunny, is approximately 30 years old.

The head scratching was a big thing with our 'tiel. He'd hop on your shoulder, put his head against your ear and go "prrt?" and that was the signal to give him head scratches. If you didn't he'd give an angry squawk nibble around your ear and do it again. So you had to give head scratches. Until he squawked again, nipped at your fingers and had had enough. Then, his second favorite thing to do was to fly in when you were watching TV and position himself between your legs. Fluff hikmself up and do the beak grinding thing. And you couldn't move or shift position or he'd give a little squawk and nip at your leg before fluffing up and getting comfy again. The happy dance on seeing you. The making sounds. I taught him to say, "birds can't talk". I miss that little birb. So much personality in such a small package.

My cockatiel was a rescue so we don’t know what happened at her old home, she doesn’t like many people (really anyone but me) and she preens, grinds her beak, flaps her wings, chirps when she hears me, makes eye contact with me, and even when she’s out of her cage and has my whole room to fly she sits a few feet away. but she is terrified of hands (even mine) so I’m trying to work through it with her and she’s getting better and I’m so proud of her. Also I watched this video to see if she was doing any of these things just to know if she was comfortable/happy and I didn’t expect her to do a lot of them! especially because I thought the wing flapping and eye contact was her trying to scare me off 😅 - Edit: I am happy to say that she’s even better now, she will step-up and she’s not scared of my hands! (She still doesn’t like other people/hands but I still call it a win!)

My Chipper does most of the things that were mentioned in the video. Sometimes he preens my hair. When I take off his cage cover first thing in the morning, sometimes he’ll start his vocal repertoire of whistling and talking. Today Chipper did one of the sweetest things ever that I wish I could have captured on video: He said, “Give me a kiss,” touched his beak to my ear, and made a kiss sound. He’s a sweet little guy…gives so much and demands so little!

hello, i got my cockatiel 4 days ago. im still new to this experience and there's a lot of things that i still need to know about the changes in their personality. at first he would only scream, that one classic cockatiel scream that means they're calling someone. now he sings and whistles more around us. here are some questions i have for now.. 1. when should i start putting toys? there's only a small dreamcatcher. 2. when should he start taking baths? 3. when can i start getting my hand close to him, or try to feed him with my hand? 4. when can i open his door so he can go outside the cage? 5. when can i start petting him?
@beansworth5694 Жыл бұрын
1. It depends on how territorial or stressed out your bird currently is with their living situation. For me, my cockatiel 'chose' me before I took him home and wanted out of his cage on the first day I got him, and I got his toys set up in his cage before I put him in. He felt safer with his new companion than in the strange new cage, but I doubt the toys contributed to that. For you? As long as you're paying attention to your bird's comfort level, you're in a better position to know when to put in toys than any internet stranger who doesn't know your pet. 2. Your bird will want to bathe whenever they feel they ought to, however misting them with a bottle spray or running water (say, from a sink) around them may give them an opportunity to 'tell' you if they want a bath. My boy fluffs his feathers and spreads out his body a particular way around the sound of running water when he wants a bath. Another thing you can do is give him a shallow dish of water big enough to accommodate him inside his cage or near outside of it to give him the option to initiate himself. 3. Try to interact with him as soon as possible so long as your presence isn't distressing to your new pet. Try holding him, by holding out a finger when he's out of his cage or you're in the process of letting him out but move slowly and allow the bird to control the terms of the interaction and you'll eventually figure out their limits and needs. 4. Set aside time every day to let them out of their cage- cockatiels are personable birds that should not be left alone for long periods of time if you can help it. They'll seek out companionship even if they're unsure of you, so if they don't immediately come to you don't despair, just be patient and watch some youtube or read a book near their open cage. 5. Maybe never. Small birds like cockatiels and parakeets, especially those that were store-bought might not learn to accept you petting them, and you might not learn how to conduct yourself around them well enough for them to accept your touch outside of being held. Even wild birds can learn to hop onto people's hands, so if a bird will never come to your outstretched finger or hand even after extended cohabitation it's likely that they've had experiences with people that make them feel especially unsafe around hands, however accepting your affectionate touch is something that they'll have to decide they want and you'll just have to learn to listen for when they're cuddly. Birds aren't cuddles-on-demand pets like a dog, no matter the species, although it's possible to bond with them well enough to get a similar effect you shouldn't have the expectation of that necessarily being the nature of your relationship.

They have had them for 3 days today and I don't even live there. The slightly older one is more caucus, he has landed on my arm but do not let me touch him. The old owners said that the younger one was tame to all humans while the older one only trust people he knows, so we will see how long it takes. Seeing how well it is going after 2 days I think it won't be any problems.

He didn't know what to do or sit on a perch ever. I was shocked when I saw him holding on to the bars with his beak,and didn't know what a great cage was. He hung on for a week or so. This cage I have is dressed with birds toys and really nice fake branches that look real. This cage has everything for him. 5ft by six foot across. Branches from top to bottom . Now that he is used to the cage, he is still cautious about me. I have owned him now for about two months. He talked and whistles. I am giving him treats but no trust yet. I love him. Any advice for me?? I want to pet him one day really soon

I personaly think that i need to be more sweet to him and spend more time with him but i dont know how to get him to learn how to come to my finger again. He even makes me feel like he doesnt like me no more and i was about to give up but with this video i understand that he kinda likes me despite the fact that he doesnt follow me or dances or talks at me but he does all the others only at me

Mine does everything except he bites too 😮 What does that mean? And he screams at times lol. I know he’s in his cage a lot. But he’s in the same room with us every day and we always talk to him all day long and feed him his favorite food. He probably just wants to get out more.
