It makes me sad to see this.... It startet like a normal day in their life. And it ends in Chaos and fear....my 24 years old Paco was also a bird, which was caught in Cameroon.... If I see this, it his hard to imagine, how this bird can find trust in a human again.... But I am happy, that she has a good life now.

I think you'll find that there are very few grey parrots, or parrots at all, in zoos. These birds were and are being trapped for the pet trade. In the past, they were mostly going to Europe, but now that they have banned all wild bird imports, they are going to the middle east and Asia primarily.

It's true that we're creating much of the demand in the first world, thus captive bred birds as pets are better than wild caught. While a handful of trappers are indeed trying to 'feed their families' that doesn't make their trapping sustainable or acceptable. We need to both eliminate the demand and provide them with viable and sustainable alternatives, otherwise we'll surely fail.

Thanks, we agree it's important for people to understand how this works in reality, disturbing as that may be. Is there hope?? Absolutely!! Since making this video and launching a campaign in the EU urging them to stop imports (90% market share and about 2 million birds a year), they have now permanently banned the importation of all wild birds!!! Lots of people worked hard on this, but this change has spared over 10 million birds already!

12 years have passed, do you have any good news and updates about the changes, like if trapping has stopped altogether or been reduced to an absolute minimum, or how the wild population has been able to rebound?
@WorldParrotTrust
@WorldParrotTrust 3 жыл бұрын
@@alexp9781 We’re seeing positive signs in a number of areas, and things are very much headed in the right direction. However, it’s too early to say if wild populations are rebounding and there is still a worrying amount of trapping and trade in some areas, often serving local rather than international markets.

Pets are not the problem, and millions of people's lives are enriched by responsible pet keeping. Just think twice about what pet is suitable for you and where you get it, then both of you will enjoy your lives together.

That doesn't matter Lucky, these animals are wild, and parrots are known for stressing out ESPECIALLY Grey's. It could be a Grey per cage, and that wouldn't change the fatality rates. What kills them is the stress from unfamiliar territory and they stop eating and die...

As I sit here in my computer room, with my CAG on my shoulder, as she is eating from my mouth...... I am so saddened to see this!!! My CAG has know complete flight and free reign of her home. Unfortunately, I have 2 dogs and ceiling fans in my home and "Piper" has gotten very good at flying into and onto places that aren't safe for a loved captive bird. She had her 1st wing clipping about a year ago, and I've been keeping them maintained...... She is a "red factored" grey, and I love her!!!!

you set a whole bunch of semi-domesticated birds free? Cat food. Run over by cars. Starved to death. Or, in the case of ring necks, now an invasive species killing off local birds. Well done you! Such beautiful corpses. Here's hoping you're a troll.

...*hugs her Certified American Bred African Grey* If people just bought local birds instead of buying wild birds then this crap wouldn't happen anymore. I agree, that the import of wild parrot should be banned. These animals are essential to the wild, a 50% fatality rate is completely unacceptable, and inhumane.

well, I have to admit i was pretty furious after watching this vid but then when my anger subsided I thought to myself, gee, this isn't the only species of animals that the humans have capture somehow in order to domesticate them. how do you think cats, dogs, cows, and plethora of other animals that we keep as pets of use for other things were captured?? This hardly seems like an issue anymore.
@timjacquez
@timjacquez 8 жыл бұрын
+Kamran Khan The thing you fail to realize is that they were domesticated over thousands of years, and in much smaller numbers. There are species of parrots near extinction in the wild from the pet trade. There are areas in Africa where wild populations of the African Grey (the birds in the video) have been reduced by 99%. If this seems like it's not an issue, then maybe you aren't using your critical thinking skills.
@kinglear5952

Cats and dogs have had highly symbiotic relationships with human beings for thousands of years. Wildcat populations and wolf populations are not being destroyed to cater for any current markets in pets. Also the level of time and tremendous expertise that it takes to keep a parrot is entirely different to a dog or a cat. Some of our interventions with pet mammals are morally wrong in their own ways. Great genetic harm is being done to cats and dogs by special fancy breeding of the animals.
@zeliph
@zeliph 14 жыл бұрын
At 1:20... um I have to say, something is ironic here. I don't know. Maybe because its similar to the slave trade. That is disappointing. Why can't they just breed the parrots and sell them as pets? Instead of treating the travel as a slave trade, where half of the birds die?

I don't want to be racist, but these people just don't get it. They are cruel. They didn't have any form of education, they don't understand that animals AND BIRDS YES have feelings. They don't have a heart, only thinking about themselves. My husband was in this country and he saw what they do to animals (cows, birds, dogs, ..) and even he and his family were shocked. I don't have any form of respect form them. I love animals too much.

Those hunters are just poor locals who are trying to feed their families, like everyone else wants to do. How about you actually engage the brain-cells and encourage home-grown parrots be used as pets to reduce demand, rather than taking out your hate on locals in a horrid, 3rd World economy.
@themalina92
@themalina92 14 жыл бұрын
It is too bad that people think confining them in tiny cages to be kept as companion pets is a good thing as opposed to them being left with their own kind in their natural habitat. I am pretty sure that one day soon captive parrot breeding will be seen as cruel and will be outlawed. Most people can deal with an infant or toddler parrot, but once the hormones start raging is when the reality sets in and people start looking for crude ways to dispose of their "beloved" pets. Sad but true.

why not just have US breeders make it lees expensive to buy birds through them than from these people? Babies are better either way and everyone including the birds wins...I have a timneh grey US bred and born...I feel bad for him and he didn't lose his whole flock...ecotourism may help the birds or local peoples but the impact on the world to get there to look at a pond isnt worth it...really? tourism? are you serious? yes importation should be passed but travel isnt the answer!

She would not survive because my parrot has never been in to the wild. So she would die! And so will many other parrots if their owners are stupid enough to listen to the crap you are talking about. Because the "trolls" as you decribe them. Would not buy a bird that they dont know where it comes from or how the have breed them.
