The scene with the baptism of Kundry is in its own way a love scene. And love is what we must feel for her in this moment. Tomlinson has a very maskulin voice. We can imagine how a formidable soldier Gurnemanz must have been in his youth!

John Tomlinson. Simply the greatest Wagnerian bass, ever!

I agree, he's terrific. No strain; pure sonics.

He is great, yes, but I guess you maybe have ever heard of Matti Salminen or Josef Greindl for example...? ;)

There are many fine conductors of Wagner, (Kna, Levine, Solti, etc.) but I think, hands down, my fave is Barenboim. He really "gets" Wagner consitantly.

Blau.

Tomlinson always had a certain natural ‘gravitas’ that must have been directed out of him in this production. He looks like a confused hobbit. (Like Thomas Stewart, his top voice was always problematic.)

"How fair the meadows seem today." WHAT meadows??? Lovely music and singing, but why does the production completely ignore what the text is describing? Phooey on Harry Kupfer.

Yes, he sings about Good Friday spells. Where are they? Can you see it? I do not. This is why there's no point in going to the opera to be scammed by an Eurotrash stage director. Much better to just listen at home, and my imagination does the job better than him.
