• Re-edit - Part 1 Austr...
Please go easy on your criticism, this is my first attempt, using a head mounted camera for most of it, so I couldn't really see exactly where it was pointed. As for the shocking editing, just a 60yo trying to learn new tech. I will try to improve the quality as I go. Hopefully plenty more videos to come, as I work out what I'm doing, so if you feel so inclined, please leave a like and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

Interesting video! A HEMI Six! I remember quite well rebuilding my Leaning Tower of Power 225 Slant Six in my '64 Dodge 330 back in 1970. Had over 200,000 miles on it when I rebuilt it and got another 60,000 out of it and traded it in on my 1969 Roadrunner . Take me back to those days! Always loved tearing down and rebuilding engines of all kinds.

Its amazing how well designed the head is for a late 60's design. Holden should have looked long & hard at these before it bodged the Blue motor head in 1980. It's hard to understand why GM stuck to 1950's rubbish heads until the 90's, with stupid side by side exhaust ports & filthy wedge chambers. Nice to see the reluctor in the distributor for electronic ignition in a 1976 engine - 4 years ahead of Holden & 5 ahead of the Falcon.

Tony says he wont use power tools to disassemble or assemble an engine bc he wants to feel how every bolt pulls out and goes back in so he does it by hand. I see you do the same, im guessing for the same reasons. I see so many chanels blow a motor apart with power tools, its nice to see someone take the time do do something by hand.

Thanks for the info. Is the bell housing bolt pattern exclusive to that engine or is it common to another Chrysler engine family?
@TAVOAu
@TAVOAu 8 ай бұрын
It closely resembles the small block V8 pattern, but different enough to not be a direct bolt in. A very small number of blocks were cast and machined differently, and accept the small block transmission directly. These happened when a shortage of the Borg Warner transmission led to Chrysler building a number of cars with 904 and 727 TorqueFlites. See my other video, "So you want to swap an Australian Hemi 6 into your US A body" I've tried to cover it there. Cheers.

Every Hemi Six can bolt to a LA engine box bellhousing , it's just the Six Bellhousing has the starter half way up on the side , I also had a 360 V8 with a manual 4 speed D20 Single Rail Borg Warner , it's Bellhousing had both six starter position and LA V8 starter cast on the one bellhousing .

A clever play on the name "Hemi" i must admit. The spherical combustion chamber of your 6 does rather closely mirror the classic Chrysler 318 "Poly" but by design, the true "Hemi" V8 engines of old have/had a central positioned spark plug to take advantage of intake & exhaust mounted OPPOSITE each other (across the head). Of course your cylinder head features the typical "side by side" valve arrangement of the Wedge head (and Poly).
@TAVOAu
@TAVOAu 24 күн бұрын
But the bottom line is, that the shape is hemispherical, as in a slice off a circle. A polyshere is made up of flat surfaces, hence the name of the poly V8. So down to fine technicalities, the Hemi name is correct. The old V8 Hemis are only named such, due to the shape, and as you say, Chrysler exploited the shape by giving it those other advantages.

Nice, very serviceable engine. Wonder what politics prevailed at the time that kept us here in the States from access to those Valiant, car/truck vehicles? They likely would have sold like hotcakes here. I definitely would have bought one, or more...
@al_dente4777
@al_dente4777 Жыл бұрын
I too, if they would have been cast with cross-flow heads. TAVO's describing the inherent stamped rocker breakage along with poor quality headbolts is quite a dissapointment, given that the last thing an Australian owner would want to deal with is a breakdown somwhere in the remote Outback. Given the only one-barreled carburetor and the single exhaust extractor, the only visible advantage to this combustion chamber design is its improved efficiency of which benefits mainly cleaner exhaust emissions

It's a fair shame that I6 engines weren't as popular here in the US. Seeing the ones that were in other markets, not to mention the vehicles as well for those markets kind makes one want to squint in irritation. Of course the same could be said for things that were effectively US only that folks from elsewhere would have given a toe or more for. Still though, that's one interesting looking piece for sure there guy.

@JosephCowen-fz8vj Ай бұрын
Any engine with a half sphere ( sometimes less for compression like this six it has 35 percent of a sphere ) for its combustion chamber , the plug absolutely does not have the come down from the top , a shovel Harley Davidson motor is a Hemi and the plug comes in from the side so does the Ford 427 Cammer V8 , and it also don't need to be a cross flow , the Valves in this Hemi are tilted front to back of the engine at 18 degrees , if you get a chance to look at pushrods they form a V from the cam .

Again only those who don't know what Hemi means say that , By definition Hemispherical means a a slice of a Sphere up to 50 percent , this chamber is 35 percent of a Sphere a 426 Hemi is 43.7 percent of a Sphere , the plug location has nothing to to with it being a Hemi , a Shovel Head Harley Davidson is a Hemi and it's plug comes in from the side , so does the plug on a Ford 427 Cammer motor it's also a Hemi , the Valves are tilted front and back at 18 degrees and the push rods form a V from the cam reflecting this , a 426 Hemi the valves are tilted left to right at 44 degrees , the six's front to back arrangement allows a non cross flow head that this is , and also has nothing to do with being a Hemi . All Hemi means is up to Half Sphere combustion chamber. No Hemi is ever half a sphere as it just would not work chamber is too big ,

Slant 6 is taller, having a much longer stroke (in 225 form at least) See the link in the video description, Tony explains the slant there. The ute shown, is heavily based on the US 1967 on Valiant, and has the same hood height. Thanks for your comment.

The Hemi 6 has a much shorter 3.68" stroke than the 225's 4.125". I've only driven a couple of 245's but they didn't seem to have the same low end grunt the 225 had, esp 160HP 2bbl version. Perhaps that glorious inlet manifold on the slant helped the long stroke too. I bet the Slant 6 has more even mixture distribution than the Hemi 6.
@neilfromclearwaterfl81
@neilfromclearwaterfl81 Жыл бұрын
@@johnrebus1641 The Slant or Wedge 6 had its place and it did allow for a lower hood line than the GM and Ford offerings at the time. You put them side by side with the others and that slightly thinner front fender line became more apparent. Without the slant with the 225 with its long stroke would have needed a taller hood or to be dropped too close to the ground. The 225 did have enough grunt to work even in a Power Wagon pushing a snow plow and many made it to 300,000 miles which was not that common in the 1960's. Best!

Again please do some research before opening mouth , the definition of Hemi in engine terms it up to half a sphere , no engine is a full half sphere combustion chamber as its to big , the six has a 35 percent of a sphere chamber a 426 Hemi has 43.7 percent of a sphere chamber , the valves are tilted front to back at 18 degrees in the six and a 426 Hemi they are tilted left to right at 44 degrees , the six,s push rods form a V from the cam , the front back tilting of the valves allow a non cross flow arrangement, again nothing to do with it being a Hemi nor does the spark plug comming in from the side , a Harley Davidson Shovel Motor is a Hemi and the plug comes in from the side , so does the Ford 427 Cammer and it's also a Hemi , as far as nothing Special this engine held a record in the 1970s as the most powerful NA inline production six at 302 HP standard ( on the chassis Dyno it always produced more than that at the wheels ) , it was as fast in a Charger as a 351 ci Cleveland 4V in a Falcon , Chrysler tryed a 360 and even a 340 V8 in the same car , they were duds , slower , heavier and used more fuel , the Top Performance Charger Motor was this Six not a V8 , factory triple side draught 45 mm Weber carbies and tuned length headers off the factory floor 302 HP.

No unfortunately. The standard bell housing pattern is quite similar to the small block V8. During the mid 70s, a small number were cast with a slight variance, to accept the small block 904/727 directly. Standard fitment for an automatic, was a purpose built version of the Borg Warner 35 transmission.
