In this week’s episode of Singapore Hawker Food, the SmallCityIsland Singapore food vlogger duo was at Geylang Serai Market and Food Centre, also known as Pasar Geylang, in search of great Singapore halal hawker food there.
This time round, we were here at the hawker centre because you had voted for Geylang Serai Food Centre in the poll we had posted. We are more than happy to savour the Singapore halal food on offer there.
Geylang Serai Market and Food Centre has a wide variety of halal hawker food. You can have nasi ayam sambal, dum briyani, kacang pool, indian rojak, goreng pisang, bandung and even Hainanese coffee. The list of hawker food can go on and on.
It will not be uncommon to go to Geylang Serai Market to savour a certain halal hawker food in mind, only to find the stall selling that item is not open. It is good thing that some of the hawker stalls sell the same food item so you will not go home dreaming of what you had wanted to eat.
No food guide or list of “must-try” can really live up to the reputation many of these stalls in Geylang Serai Food Centre has build. It is a Singapore halal food wonderland truly to be experienced.
Shop: Fhoul Madinah Istimewa
What we had: Kacang Pool (Fhoul)
Fhoul Madinah Istimewa has been serving authentic and delicious kacang pool (fhoul) based on the home-recipe from Hadramaut. They have been a part of the Singapore hawker food scene since 1950s- the good old food carts days in Geylang Serai.
The local rendition, Kacang Pool, is a dish with the beans cooked with ground beef and spices, then garnished with a sunny side egg, raw chopped green chilli, onions and a sprinkling of lime and served with toasted french baguette.
A must try for those who love Authentic Arab cruisine.
Shop: Nasi Ayam Sambal
What we had: Nasi Ayam Sambal
Being at home in Geylang Serai Food Centre, this chicken rice stall has won the hearts of many Singapore hawker food lovers with it's unique spicy sambal.
Their Nasi Ayam came with an amazingly flavour packed chicken. The crispy crunchy skin holds the juicy meat made for a delicious bite.
Not to mention, their chicken rice was extremely fragrant as well. But the true magic happens when you mix it with their unique sambal chilli for an ultimate palette busting flavour burst.
Shop: Geylang Biryani Stall
What we had: Mutton Biryani
With a history dating back to 1964, the humble family business has build a reputation in the Singapore Hawker Food scene and is now in the safe hands of its third-generation owner.
This plate of Nasi Briyani Kambing or Mutton Biryani may look pale and flavourless, but trust me, the basmati rice was unbelievably fragrant, fluffy and is pack with flavours. The sweet aroma of cinnamon and cloves tickles your senses, making it even more inviting.
Not to mention, the fork-tender mutton had an intense peppery flavour too, making it all the more irresistible. I only wish there were more of that delicious gravy so that I can completely drench my rice with it!

What is a hawker?
A hawker in the Singapore context is someone who sells street food and now known as hawker food. In the old days, this was from a roadside stall or a pushcart. These days, hawkers can be found in coffee shops, hawker centres, and food courts (air-conditioned hawker centres). Hawkers usually specialise in a particular cuisine, sometimes in just one dish.
You can find hawker centres and food courts everywhere, including downtown whereas coffee shops tend to be located in the suburbs.
