Some teachers are against question hooks but I am for them if you use them the correct way. Basically, ask a question that will relate and engage the reader to think about your topic.

Thanks Chris. First you want to break down your topic or question, I have a video on that. Then figure out the answer and write your thesis. Once you write your thesis, then write each of your topic sentences. From there, you can write each paragraph. Then come back to your hook and background information when you write your conclusion. I have videos for most of those thing. Hope it helps.

Do you have any ideas on how to write a hook for an argumentative essay on The Crucible? My essay is on how certain concepts from the book are still relevant today, such as intolerance, greed and reputation. What could be a good hook for that? Thank you!

Thanks!! To be honest, I have never read the book but here are a couple thoughts: 1.) Don’t worry about your hook until after you write your entire essay. A lot of times, the hook will naturally appear when you are done. 2.) I would avoid a question hook-it is a bit overused. 3.) Maybe describe briefly how we see some of those things in 2021-maybe find a recent news story that displays those themes. 4.) you could also give a stat that shows how many people struggle with those things 5.) The key thing is to tie the theme from your hook into your conclusion. For example, maybe challenge the reader to fight against those tendencies. That way the whole essay is connected. Hope that helps!!!

I have a quick question, So I turned in my essay and mind you there was a 3 paragraph passage given to us by the teacher surrounding the main focus of the essay, which I used quotation marks around the statements that was in the passage and I didn't say "the author wrote" or the author said this with some of the statements given, (I think the first one I did) but I'm worried about getting plagiarized checked.

It is best practice to state the author's name, page #, title, etc. because just quotes doesn't cite the source. I imagine you would get marked down points for incorrectly citing but I wouldn't think you would get flagged for plagiarism. If you are worried, you can also email your teacher. You can explain your thought process and if I were your teacher, I would hear you out.
