My Gen 6 Vortec 454 is at a little over 319K miles now, never been out of my GMC dually truck. I just had the timing chain on it replaced last week for the 1st time, it had slack in it. Mine of course has been well cared for it's entire life, but these are really good engines in general.... I also have a jetboat with a 1978 454 bored to 468 with twin tunnel ram and twin Holly 660 mechanical carbs atop it; powerful running engine!

I have the same motor and they are real good motors to have. I plan on putting new rings on mine and cam and springs. Going to build it for a rock crawler I'm going to build. Be Better than a side by side after I'm done. Going to rebuild a 400 turbo tranny for it and get a aluminum transfer case for it. Going to use 3/4 ton Chevy axle on it also.

I have a gen 6 454 in my dads shop truck that he gave to me for my square body and I wanted to do a carb swap on it this summer but I’ve never seen full videos on what I’m looking for till now so please be specific on how or where you gonna get the intake manifold from

Just get any decent dual plane bbc will fit ,airgap Is best if $ if not get speedmaster repop 200$

I just bought a 454 big block for 3k rebuilt. Did I get a good deal? It only had about 60k miles before the rebuild

Is it okay to use an impact to take the bolts off the cylinder head? Or any bolts for that matter? I always see people using electric rachets, but what's the point if my impact can do the same job.

I usually break the bolts lose with a breaker bar first, then run them out with an impact or electric ratchet, depending what I have closest to me. I never use one putting bolts back in, however.

Or are you just throwing on an older 454 intake manifold, would that type of thing be possible

An older one should work as long as the ports match. There may be some interference with the machined edge on the head, which will require a small notch to be put in the intake. I'll be sure to go into detail when I get one!

Notch what ? There's no notching the old manifold drops right on oval port that is , maybe thinking notch on the heads were the springs go on somtimes there is cast flash in spring pockets were rotator eliminators go only somtimes

Nice engines , truly can make 500 hp na with stock short block and heads just gota pick right CAM intake carb headers zz 502 cam nice street strip got one in my gen 6 great engines for guy who just wants throw quick engine together go 11s or 10s on laghing gas retard timing and watch plugs detonation kill ya 200 shot is ok if carefull
