How important it is that you know local customs. I know it is allot of stress on you and Gina, but you already made the first few moves. Take good care of the people that help you and work with you, and in turn, they will take good care of you. There is a natural pleasure in giving and my people are not shy to give but they also like to be recognized. Your friendships will be worth more than gold.....but be wise, always be wise. We truly hope that you be very successful and never forget how much work it took to get there. We sincerely wish we could visit with you all for Christmas and enjoy some beer or um vinho do Porto (a nice tawny port wine) and Bolo Rei (Kings Cake)....just because we are so proud of you and your effort. I admit that I was curious about Gina doing all the driving but I wouldn't dream of asking! I like looking at the comments on many of the videos I watch because a lot can often be learned or added to the info in the videos but I hadn't picked up on the "nosiness" or criticism. I'm a Stoic, or something - there must be some Greek philosophers who gave it a name a few thousand years ago - if somebody wants to tell me/the public something then they will. Or they want to keep it personal: don't ask. Patience is my motto. It is my impression that many newish vloggers pick up 'weirdos' after a year or so who ask strange questions or make highly inappropriate or deeply personal comments, often causing the vlogger to cease doing what they are doing. Sometimes it is cultural, sometimes it is pure nastiness, often it is hard to tell! Please don't stop doing what you are doing!

Hi, whilst you're talking about cars, did you manage to import your car yet. To be fair I find it amazing that people dont quite grasp the way videos are made. The farm is looking great
@OKportugal4 жыл бұрын
We submitted all of the paperwork about a month ago, they asked us for a few more documents as they try their best to find any loophole to force you to pay the import tax. For the last couple of weeks its been silent. We contacted the guy doing the paperwork for us and he says that during covid things are slow and we must just wait. We will see. If its unsuccessful we will drive it back to the UK and sell it over there. If you dont mind paying the import tax then the import process is very simple. Its only complicated when you try to do it free of import tax. I believe that next year they are scrapping the high import tax and it will be much cheaper.

Hi, Ken and Gina. You know how to shoot a video. Really good. In Portugal we say when you don't know nothing, you have two options in life; 1st you become a critic , 2nd ... this option, I will not tell you , but if you ask arround and about you'll get the information. Critics after passing all the exams, which is an easy part of the process, they will become "Experts" . So I'll not be surprised if they will critise with an expert eye the method of extracting the oil from the olives used by generations after generations through the centuries . Just wait you'll see. Thank you for sharing the whole process in harvesting and filming!! Pls discuss also your yields per hectare in part 2 based on 45 kelos per plant. Pls highlight also if there were insect and fungal damages that might have impacted on average yields. According to me plant spacing should be more closer that I found in Tunisia. So, you can plant more samplings next yrs. Overall this video was lovely because every harvest is the end of an operation and it ends to mean profitability. Don't worry about it.. we have friends here in Andalucia harvesting their olives too, a very busy time indeed... lovely to see Gina and the dogs, little one is growing quickly, good luck with all you have to do, 💗💓

How much and how do you get paid for the olives? I'm thinking of moving to Portugal from the US, but don't have money to fully retire, so I'd need some income.
@OKportugal4 жыл бұрын
We dont know yet. The oil should be ready in a couple of weeks as the oil press have a huge amount to work through from all the surrounding farms. I dont think that its worth very much money here as almost everyone has olive trees but it will bring in something. Eating olives are worth more but there is more work involved in that. We should find out soon the result and I will share it with the channel viewers :)
@CanalTremocos4 жыл бұрын
Presses vary their cut every year but you should get back in oil 10% of your olives clean weight after they take leaves and minnows out. Around €400/TON. That team of 6 people and 2 machines made .. 2 tons .. in a day? It's just a hobby.

It is very lovely to have such kind neighbors. May I ask how you compensate them for their time? Do you pay them in oil, or cash, or trade of some kind, or do neighbors just help each other when it's needed? Next season will they come again, or will they loan or rent you their tree shaker, or do they anticipate you getting your own? (Curious about cultural expectations. We are planning to emigrate and there is so much to learn!)
@OKportugal3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joyce, yes we are very lucky to have them as neighbours and they are so lovely. They are sheep dairy farmers and need a lot of grass to feed the flock. We let them grow grasses on our fields to feed their sheep and in return they help us with things like our olive and grape harvest. We did of course also give them a portion of our olive oil and we are sharing our grapes together to make wine.

So you had vertigo or a physically damaged inner ear? I feel like I'm in a tumble dryer when I'm in a car. I'm not sure it's vertigo but what I do know is that me inner ear is damaged and it's not going to magically heal. The easiest way for me to describe it is to say I have vertigo but I'm not sure it's the correct word. I'm glad you are able to drive still.

I don't know what's up with people these days. You do what you want to do. It's you and Gina's lives.Live it how you want.Cindy Vine felt she needed to explain herself to the haters. Just look at the thumbs up compared to the thumbs down. You are doing a great job, as is Cindy with her channel. I know how hard putting out a You tube channel is. I am attempting to put some content out on my house project and it is hard going. the last thing you want is to get upset about these people.Ignore the nasty comments. is there a way to block them or report them.? Keep up the good work.Steve & Cass

Yes you can 'hide' the users from your channel. Their comments will no longer be visible to you or anyone else but they will still think they can see them and probably wonder why no one is responding to them 😂 they will still be able to watch your videos though which is only a good thing for you, so it's a win-win really ❤️

Hey Ken, I didn't catch how many trees you had done at the time you were discussing the kg of olives. Was it three trees? IDK why the closed captions are not working on this video. Anyway, how many olive trees do you have, 100? How much olive oil (ltrs) does your trees produce annually? 🤑 How's your sister, Victoria?

I got all the answers that I was seeking in part 2. I didn't realize there was a second part, but I am happy to see what your trees produced. Over a tone of olives I pretty impressive.

Thanks. We arent really setup this year to sell but we will see how much we get from the press. Because of covid and regulations its probably not going to be possible to get that sort of access for filming. I will see what I can do. Would be great to get closeups of the press in action :)

Can you eat olives "raw" like right off the tree? Do you just harvest them once a year?
@OKportugal4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not as they contain a very bitter chemical called Oleuropein to fend off animals and bugs from eating them. You need to cure them for a few weeks in a brine solution of pickling salt and water. This leeches out the oleuropein and makes them more palatable. Yes it's a once a year harvest.

I am a video professional. I know and appreciate how much work, time and effort goes into making your productions. I marvel at the level of your work. Your choice of music is excellent. I have only one note for you. Try to not be seduced by the KZbin/social media Medusa, this can only lead you to frustration and anxiety. Be careful of TMI. I have met vertigo, not a pleasant mistress. Keep up the good work. Thoroughly enjoy the way you see the world. Your neighbors are the salt of the earth.

It's really hard to operate the cameras and film and appear in the film so I use a combination of methods like setting up timelapses on tripods. It's tricky as I have 1-3 cameras filming all day and hundreds of hours of footage a week to go through and edit into our weekly episodes.

Its not bad on a bike. and even in a car its not a constant thing. it sort of comes in attacks and is pretty random. On a bike I can just pull over and rest if I feel it coming on. When I got diagnosed they said there was nothing that could be done for it but that my brain could rewire itself to get used to it over the years. We will see :)

@OKportugal3 жыл бұрын
It depends on where in the world you are. In Portugal everyone has olives so the price is low. We got around 150 litres from our 100 mature olive trees. I think the olive press was paying around 3 euros a litre. Its a lot of work and you'd need a lot of mature trees to make a living from it.

Better of separating olives from leaves, otherwise leaves will give sour taste to your olive oil.

The olive press has a machine to do this and blow all of the leaves away. It would have taken many days to try and do this by hand
