I'm making a barnwood fireplace mantle (miter folded box beam) and matching floating shelves on either side for my first paying customer. I'm super nervous about dimensioning the wood to keep as much character as possible in this wood that's at least as old as I am. Thanks for your advice! It will come in very useful!

I have a bunch of barnwood with small squares on the ends, do you know what they used them for

Hello, thank you for such informative videos. Do you have any advice for applying a warm rich brownish color to a Fir countertop?

Just came across your channel and love the content. I have a question that you may be interested in addressing. On your solid table and countertops you seem to prefer an edge band as opposed to doing a breadboard end. Is the something about using barn wood that leads to this or customers seem to prefer it? Just wondering. Keep the great content coming! I am learning a lot.

Thanks! So I build with bread boards as well it just all depends on the project and the wood. In some cases the wood is not think enough but in most cases I’m trying preserve as much character as possible so milling it thin and planing down to a flexible thickness allows me to preserve maximum character and then I use the ply wood as the core and straight and I have to barnwood edge and the sides to cover the layers 👍

Is there disadvantage to using a planer to square up the first side of the board instead of a track saw? Curious as to why you choose to use the track saw. Thank you, great video!

A planer will mirror the imperfections on the opposing side, where as a track saw will create its own, perfectly straight path.

What species is this wood? Looks to light to be oak?
