Wow, great point about close-micing, and trying to record the instrument as opposed to the moving air (i.e., the sound), the sort of tip that almost goes without saying, but once explained you kind of think, "Oh yeah, wow." Profound!

It's a fun fact that the fundamental is not always the loudest pitch that you get out of a instrument. The lowest resonance of an object, as you say, is the fundamental. The various resonances above that fundamental are called overtones, which can be harmonic or (more usually from most objects) inharmonic. Objects which have mainly harmonic overtones are (as you say) easier to work with as the basis for sample instruments (the metal bowl has a strong inharmonic overtone - but less likely to smash when hit with a carrot) The carrot works well by the way because it's quite dense, so you transfer a good amount of energy, but the surface is quite soft (compared to say a stick) so the contact area is larger which helps suppress more of the higher, inharmonic resonances /overtones. I could imagine that a week-old carrot might be better than a freshly purchased one...

3:49 I wonder if the more "boring" sound quality could be attributed to the shape of the glass, having more uniform curves and the flat bottom, almost a perfect wheel compared to the wine glass, with its more complex contours.

Oh man that was funny. Despite the text speak, I genuinely did LOL when that glass broke.. largely because that is totally the sort of thing that would happen to me! You're face the second time around was priceless also. Just don't let your companies H&S see that as they would have a meltdown at the lack of safety goggles! I laugh because that's largely the business I'm in (when not doing music) 😏 I have an SM58 and still have yet to get round to doing any sampling. So once again, thanks for the shove in the right direction. This is yet another video that has popped up at the right time. 👍

Edit: Okay well, I'm an idiot, he goes and explains this very fact in the next shot. The following pargraph is invalid. Is the fundamental in fact "the lowest audible tone"? Wouldn't a sub frequency that may be apparently quieter than a harmonic in the 1-5kHz range be the fundamental? If you strike a glass and pick out the loudest overtone, it's not necessarily the fundamental if there's a low tone that you're just not hearing! Not sure why I felt compelled to share.
