Most people have no idea how fast a hopped up old Sportster would go. That's what you'd see at the drags when I was a kid. Bad Knuckleheads and bad Sportsters. I know you had fun with it.

You're correct Mike. AN refers to an Army-Navy specification for fasteners. AN fasteners feature a higher tensile strength and shear strength than common fasteners and are noticeably less brittle than SAE bolts. The nomenclature has been replaced by MS (Mil Spec) numbers. Both types are used primarily in aircraft air frames and engines, as well as many applications requiring extra strength and reliability. You won't find them at the hardware store but they can be sourced from many vendors by searching the Internet for "AN Fasteners". I'm an A&P and am quite familiar with them.

May be helpful, for those that don't know. Keep track of which cover screws come out of their respective holes. There are 3 different lengths, short, medium and long. I draw a rough diagram on cardboard and stick the screws into the cardboard to keep track of where they go.

Ah, the Western Americas live! Saw you've had some weather to play with on the various news channels, what larks eh? Irony is, an old friend moved back to England after 3 yrs working in Venice Beach - because he 'missed the seasons'! Rather fun here too; a street full of parked-up igloos last week thanks to heavy snows, & today, a 45+mph gale backcombing the braver squirrels into running just that little bit faster, having that big fluffy 'rudder' can't help much either . . . Whatever 'animal' mangled that poor primary casing, doth need thoroughly birching & a rapidly rotating pineapple for afters. (Hope you wrote inside the cover that it was none your doing, & that 'this signature alone is now worth thousands' : )

Sometimes you just have to be careful how you pick your projects. Maybe the next guy will take it down to bare cases. I think I can make it hang together for quite a while for her. I think she'd be better off with an Evo Sportster. As for the weather? Oh well. All things being considered, I'd rather be at the beach in Venice. Stay dry. Write soon.

I like your quiet, informative videos Mike and Mike. I aquired a 1978 Sportster Cafe Racer framed ex drag bike a few years ago, not sure why. It will be a challenge to give it road manners. Started working on it last fall then got laid up with various ailments, but that isn't what this is about. The two bad bolt holes in the left side case that you are working on, I had a thought on how to fit the clutch tool. Perhaps a couple of pieces of flat steel to bridge the damaged holes with a nut welded on over the damaged holes for the tool to screw into and holes at each end to attach the steel to adjacent good holes. It won't repair the holes but would allow the clutch to be worked on. The idea is probably worth what you paid for it. ;-) I need to figure out mine and let you finish that one properly.

Mike, you use that paper towel a lot, and you always have a reason for everything you do. Is there a preference for when you use paper and when you use your red shop towels?

I try to use paper when I'm going to them dirty quickly and throw them away. Shop towels cost more and I don't launder them.

Appears to be XLH = VIN 3A > oil bottle, large battery,,electric start (OEM Delco V reg) ...XLCH =VIN 4A > Rectangular oil tank, small battery, kick start, smaller square V-reg = Bosch(IIRC) Notice a solid state V-reg on bike you're working on...Too bad about the damaged inner primary threads ... OEM screws on primary & cam cover were Philips head on my '74 XLH.....I swapped to Allenhead(AKA sockethead cap screws) ...Spark advance flyweight assembly & very thin diameter points cam bolt with 9/16 hex head(IIRC) was one of the 1st parts to wear out on my XLH...weight plate pin holes = worn to ovals, spring wire & thin points cam bolt snapped... Motorcycle was only a couple years old at the time...Not sure if defective parts or left the factory dry...??? Got in habit of periodically cleaning advance plate, flyweights, points cam flyweight index & apply trace of grease , reset timing, etc.

I've used a real good grade of anti sieze on those advance mechanisms for a long time. It really saves them. Don't even see that stuff much anymore. By the way; by the time I see these old Sportsters, everything on them is mix and match.

@@pacificmike9501 Mix & match parts for sure...I have an oil cooler on mine that to this day I haven't seen another one like it...Side mount under ignition switch where horn is usually mounted....vertical fins w/ front to back air flow...> Knew a guy way back that would attempt to rebuild damaged flyweights & advance plates...drill out & sleeve the weight holes if they weren't too worn ... Think it was more of an experiment... sure a few worked OK for short term ... >Odd how the only 2 damaged threads on inner primary line up with clutch spring compressor tool.... :-/

Hi Mike!, great learning experience! If i may pick your brain one more time? I have a 76XLH , everything in the primary is new with the exception of the chain itself. Clutches, steels ,ramp, cable. Clutch is adjusted per FSM . My issue is when the bike is cold, first started, it is not liking going into 1st gear, it just grinds? After enough messing around, i can get it into 2nd gear, it will then go into first? I also have a very minor, if there is such a thing, chain slap on the cover, that goes away when hot. My question is if the primary chain is mis- adjusted, how much effect will it have on initial gear engagement? Once the bike is warmed up, everything works properly. Could it be a simple as resetting the chain tension or should i be looking elsewhere? Any insight would be most appreciated!! Love your channel!
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 8 ай бұрын
Why is everything new but the chain? Did you check the chain for tight and loose spots? I'm afraid I couldn't diagnose this without looking inside. Sounds like the clutch isn't releasing properly, like maybe oil on the plates.
@chrisrestifo7010
@chrisrestifo7010 8 ай бұрын
The chain was in good shape, probably replace by the PO. It's a wet clutch, so I hope there is oil on the plates, unless I'm misunderstanding you?

Mike, I have a 74 FLH Shovel, my carb squirt nozzle is pointing to the rear of manifold squirting fuel directly to the rear cylinder only. I need to turn the squirt nozzle to the center of the manifold. I pulled the bowl and put a socket on the nozzle, but it is tight. I don't want to snap it off. How can I turn this nozzle?

Howdy . With harley making all the changes Would you cover some of the after market harley replacement parts or hole motors . From S&S Titan and Rev tech Harley as we know it is is gone ,Good bad and soso . And what is left is to expensive So to keep our old bikes going looks like after market and swap meets !
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 Жыл бұрын
What has changed? A new Harley has always been about the same price as a mid size chevy. Technology always keeps moving forward. Aftermarket has been saving the day for all of us since the seventies. Depending on what you need, I was buying parts for my old bike from Paughco since about 1969. The aftermarket suppliers grew in the seventies, and when the Evos came out in the eighties, the market got huge, and more companies, producing all kinds of stuff for Harleys, popped up all over. New Harley riders had a bike that didn't require much maintenance, so, they bought goodies. Those parts financed the way for producing reproduction antique parts. Harley quit producing parts for their old bikes many years ago. Why should they make parts for old bikes when they want you to buy a new one? Everything is more available today than ever. And, it's all in your computer. Google "Aftermarket motors for Harley Davidson." Then try any other parts. It's all there.
