Absolutely gutted about the death of John Renbourn. One of the best technical, classical, blues, medieval guitar players and song writers ever to walk this earth. I was lucky enough to see him live in 2012 at the Mac theater in Birmingham, right at the front, row A. (I filmed it) ... Blew me away ! RIP to a legend!

If you're lucky you might get the odd rock guitarist name-checking Jansch but for me John was the man. Listening to his albums switched me from Tamla Motown to acoustic guitar; switched me to sell my electric guitar to an acoustic. Sixty years later I can't play anything he wrote though I can play and have written lots. Genius. Forever my hero.

Thanks so much to Guitar Workshop for putting this up! Tons of great stuff to get cracking with on John's "Celtic Melodies and Open Tunings", which I just bought from them.

Nobody can go quite so medieval on your ass as John Renbourn. Exceptional exposition from The Master.

For JK220553 It's in his DVD and book set; "Medieval & Renaissance Music for fingerstyle guitar" which this video is a clip from. It's an EXCELLENT DVD

I´m still a friend of the Al Steart songs, especially "Palace of Versailles". Looking/hearing around where the beautiful intro comes from, a friend of mine started playing "The Earl of Salisbury". Well, I guess he´s right. (Listen to 0:10 - 0:18 and then to Al Stewarts "Palace of Versailles") Thanks for posting this, John! (Und: Danke Dir, Andreas! ;-) )

John is clearly relishing explaining this beautiful pavane and playing it too.

Years ago I showed a guitar teacher John's arrangement of this tune, and tried to learn it with his help. He had a bachelors degree in music, and taught college level guitar courses, but couldn't play this as well as John.

Great lesson. However, this would have sounded so much more authentic played on a suitable nylon-strung classical guitar. Also the reproduction here is suboptimal - too much bass and muffled middle or something. I have the original VHS.
@AnthonyMonaghan7 жыл бұрын
TranceNotes I'm pretty sure if John wanted to play it on a nylon string he would have done just that...no matter what you think.

@@AnthonyMonaghan Right. I don't think he was ever trying to play "period appropriate" instruments. Instead, he was focused on playing music. I truly appreciate videos like this. One of the greats, sharing some ideas with us .

Especially since the original instrument is a keyboard instrument like John mentioned. And the piece seems to have been written 300 years before nylon strings.
